MK9 Shang Tsung has always been a topic I wanted to explore. Hopefully this video will showcase the many "funny" things he does in the story XD

Shang Tsung. My favorite MK villain. Done dirty like half the time he's in the games. Sometimes you give the soul suck, and sometimes? You just suck.
Also? Take a look at 9:12. Shang subs for Shao. This is canon.
Raiden mentions in the MK9 story mode that he can only fight in the tournament if someone challenges him. I take it that this means he doesn't count toward Earthrealm's head count, but if he's challenged and wins, he does eliminate whoever challenged him. That's kind of weird.
Probably. But it never happens. So I don't really look to much into that XD
But who the hell has the balls to challenge the thunder God of earthrealm?

In MK9 I loved playing Stryker
I hope Stryker comes back in MK12 or the second movie.
WITHOUT being killed or looking weird.
I personally have always thought his appearance was his biggest weaknesses. When MK3 came out, I remember immediately noticing how different and interesting all of the characters looked, but Stryker was an absolute eyesore and still is to this day, imo. An ordinary cop just isn't that interesting in a series like Mortal Kombat, however he absolutely can be, starting with a visual makeover.
Ultimately, NRS seems to be good about redeeming characters and recreating them, even if it means changing things that retcon certain story elements, but I guess that's what the multiple timelines are for 🤷
In short, agreed, but he definitely needs some work.
@@natesaibot As long as they don't do whatever they did with Stryker's redesign in MK Armageddeon, I'd be up for seeing Stryker again. My main worry is that they'd lean a little too much into... uhhhh, the modern zeitgeist if they brought him back. With or without her being one half of a good villain power couple, I still hate how they altered Sindel for MK11's timeline.
Then again, Robocop in MK11 didn't go that route so, who knows? NRS did well with representing the guest characters, but I'm just worried they'd take more risks with the MK cast, especially B-listers.
I think both the lack of shapechanging and focus on killing Cage can be traced back to one thing: Shang's secondary objective in all versions of the MK tournament is to add the losers to his soul stockpile. He wanted his lackeys to kill their opponents so he could get their souls. Likewise he can't shapechange in the story fight because by that point only Sub Zero had died, and Quan Chi made sure to killsteal that one from him. In the arcade ladder it's assumed that the fighters he transforms into were killed at some point, but that can't be done in the story proper because everyone's accounted for.
Granted, this also gives Shang the massive L that he tried to set up as many deaths as possible but his tournament this time turned out to be one of the least lethal in MK history.
That's a very interesting take XD
Peter Pan and Wendy comes out today:
Nah
Mortal Kombat Shang Tsung sucks comes out today:
Oh hell yeah can’t wait for it
I think I may have a theory on why Shang Tsung has Cyrax and Sektor fight Scorpion. I think it’s a halftime entertainment thing. Like “well, nobody is fighting so they gotta be bored. Ooh, what’s this? A challenge!”
Edit: probably explains the other fights that doesn’t count according to Tsung. Although… who was Sonya vs bi-Han meant to entertain?
A CHALLELLAHC?
Would be really awkward if scorpion didn't show then.
hey, imprisonment is boring. gotta cheer jax up somehow.
@@ShadowSorel thats true. There are also some dying prisoners in that stage too. They leaving this world seeing an epic fight
Pretty sure Sonya’s fight against Sub Zero was part of the tournament, whereas Scorpion vs Cyrax and Sektor was not, since they’re on the same side. Scorpion’s fight against Sub Zero obviously wasn’t a part of the tournament either, as he’d already been eliminated and again, they’re both fighting for Outworld.

Wasted Potential: MK9/MK (2011) Shang Tsung
10:45
I think the reason they did it this way is to prevent the possibility of shang tsung from turning into guest characters like Kratos or Freddy Krueger
Apparently Kronika also has this issue in MK11 Aftermath where she'll rarely turn into DLC characters
Thats just speculation on my part though.
Pretty interesting theory XD
@@SonicHaXD I guess when the creators don't answer these kind of questions, we gotta find the answer ourselves

Shang: IS THAT A CHALLENGE I HEAR
I feel like besides Raiden wanting to protect Sonya, if Shang does defeat her, she dies and gets her soul stolen, making Shang Tsung stronger and getting a person out of the tournament and getting Outoworld closer to victory. It is too big of a risk for him to take. Or that is at least what i interpret from it.
15:04 *ME* -lina
Ngl the one second scene with Cyrax killing Johnny with the anime op is so fucking funny I had to rewind it ten times.
Glad Sonic finally corrected himself on Shang Tsung not "officially" being the last challenge despite him being the final boss of MK1
Can’t wait to watch this later tonight, TY SonicHaXD as always bringing us lots of laughter and smiles with these MK sucks series. ❤️
A good twist would be that Scorpion is actually from Earthrealm. So his victories would count for team Raiden. It's the same reason Bo Rai Cho can't fight in the tournament because he's actually from outworld.
I think "Shang Tsung just wants to go with the flow" perfectly encapsulates the story of MK 2011
Here are some more MK2011 Shang Tsung fails.
-The revival of Sindel was originally his thing, but it got done by Quan Chi. In fact, Shang Tsung couldn't even fully heal Kabal's burns. Yes. Shang Tsung, professional necromancer since 1995, had trouble against burn wounds. Also, Kabal escapes.
-Quan Chi, Mileena, Noob Saibot, Sektor and Rain had actually successful backstab plots. Quan Chi had 2 of those (in the canon story and in his Arcade Ending), Mileena, who accomplished nothing in the Story Mode, backstabbed Shang himself, Noob Saibot, who was a useless idiot and a goon in the story, became the ultimate top dog in his Arcade Ending without lifting a finger, Sektor's W is (semi-)CANON and Rain wasn't even in the fucking Story Mode. Shang Tsung on the other hand has a failed plan in Baraka's ending (where he dies), another failed one, as mentioned, in Mileena's ending (where he also dies AND gets his soul sucked no problemo), gets killed in Kenshi's ending, so his implied W over Kenshi is short-lived, and his actual successful betrayal scheme in his Arcade Ending backfires and he needs Bo Rai Cho's help in order to take on Liu Kang who now has god status.
-One of his fatalities is a rehash of Joker's from MK vs DCU.
-His plans keep getting exposed. First, he is spotted by Smoke while trading weapons with Kano, then Kitana discovers his work in the disappointingly generically-designed Flesh Pits.
-He has Baby Kahn to whine at him after every failure, despite half of them not even being his fault.
-The Edenian Royal family sucks souls better than him. We already talked about Mileena, so let's do Shang a favour and not remind him how his 2-year-old child non-canonically beat him in every way. But Sindel also sucked Kitana's soul by using Shang's powers (Shang himself didn't even use them in the story), and those powers didn't even instantly kill Kitana.
Let's not mention his numerous other failed experiments, because most experiments have some failed tests every now and then, so let's cut him some slack. He needs some slack after all that. At least he still commands Reptile. -He fails almost every single thing he was assigned to do and the MKX Comic retconed Kotal as Reptile's master during the Outworld Invasion, but sush.-
Quan chi stole all his accomplishments
@@Kira22558 In a way, that also undermines Shang Tsung's role in the original timeline as Shao Kahn's right-hand man and the second half of the Deadly Alliance, since apparently Shao Kahn didn't need him for the MK3 invasion and Quan Chi didn't need him in Deadly Alliance. Heck, during Kung Lao's endurance match Quan Chi is the one to emphadise how "deadly" that alliance is, as if he is Shang's superior.
Also, check the difference of him suggesting the Outworld Tournament on Shao Kahn in the MK2 comic and in MK9.
MK2 comic: Keeps his cool, convinces Kahn to give him his youth and suggests the Outworld Tournament in a way that suggests he had put previous thought into it.
MK9: Scared shitless, suggests the Outworld Tournament in a way that seems like it was something he came up at the last second and we don't even get to see him getting restored in his youth nor do we see how he was restored in his youth.
Does Sindel dying mean that Shang died twice in the story, thrice if we include the opening scene? Heck, we don't even get to see Shang's soul and the many many souls he has absorbed get released. Heck, it doesn't even feel that Shang's soul was inside Sindel. Shang's soul getting sucked doesn't appear to be that different from a regular soul suck (although perhaps the longer duration is meant to show the many souls inside Shang being absorbed too), Sindel doesn't use Shang's abilities (aside from sucking Kitana's soul at the very end) and Shang himself doesn't even use any of his abilities aside from opening a portal and taunting Smoke with a Bi-Han transformation. Smoke. And not Kuai Liang. Because if there is one thing that I realised is that from Bi-Han failing to even fight Shang in MK1 to him being seemingly retconned as being invited by Shang at the tournament to him straight up working for Shang in MK9, in the 95' movie and the 2021 movie to serving Kahn in Conquest to existing in Scorpion's Revenge just to get fridged to Kuai Liang getting stopped by Reptile's interference in MK2 to him too as well failing to kill Shang to him getting seperated from the rest of the gang in Deadly Alliance to entering the MK2 story to avenge his brother's death resulting in him fighting Scorpion in MK9 and Battle of the Realms to build up a two-vs-two of Shang and Fujin vs Scorpy and Sub...only for Shang to get almost instantly frozen in a badly edited scene, despite his presemse being the entire reason for the entire fight happening at the first place, to turn into Fujin vs Scorpy and Sub (because why would we want the player to get used at using a gameplay mechanic in a story mode that we -crippled- modified to help the player get used to using gameplay mechanics when we could instead just resort to cheap difficulty that belongs in an entirely different game system) Mortal Kombat just won't allow Shang and Sub to fight. I mean for crying out loud, in both his MK2 and MK9 introductions Kuai Liang said that he'll kill Shang Tsung but it ultimately results to nothing. It's like the developers are just teasing us at this point with this fight. Just like what happens with a proper Godzilla and Gamera crossover.
Wait a minute? Why didn't Quan Chi include Shang Tsung in his Revenant army? Is Shang's soul still trapped inside Sindel even after death? Or did Shao Kahn forgot or decided not to give it to Quan Chi for some weird unexplained reason? Did Kahn and Quan Chi just forget about Shang and the many many souls he could provide them? In fact, wouldn't it be cool as fuck to see Shao Kahn after having absorbed Shang Tsung's soul as well as all the souls trapped inside him (and maybe lots of the other souls in the Soulnado and of people who died during the invasion) take on the Elder-God-empowered Raiden? Why couldn't this be the final battle?
I'm surprised there was no "SHANG SUNG" from the MK vs. DC game.
This version of shang taung made me roll my eyes everytime someone didnt kill him.
Then aftermath from MK11 made me fall inlove with him😂😂
2 friends have a friendly dissagrement on something, shang tsung, "A CHALLENGE"
After watching The4thSnake's critiques on MK 2011 a lot of times before, I never understood how incompetentally bad Shang Tsung was in the story. I just though he gets blamed by Shao Kahn for said Kahn's failures, and then gets the "you're fired" treatment when…that centaur guy died.
Motaro. I'm sad he died...
@@saidi7975 Oh…damn, I'm now upset that I forgot his name. And Shao Kahn got Shang Tsung fired for that, too!
Actually, Shao Kahn actually was needlessly bitching at Shang Tsung during the Story Mode. Here is my proof of that.
-After failing to win the tenth tournament, Shao Kahn orders Shang Tsung's execution. Alright, fair enough, makes sense for someone like him to do that, but during his rant Shao Kahn says that he should just have invaded the traditional way AND IN THE SAME BREATH he acknowledges that he can't do it! Why even bring it up if you're going to debunk what you just said?
-Also, Kahn gave Shang his youth. In the original timeline, Shang wasn't the final boss of the tournament and Shang being held back by his age wasn't something that was seen as much of a problem until Shang presented it as such. In the new timeline, Shang is the final boss of the tournament and we don't know if in this version anyone brought up Shang being weaker as an older man as an argument, meaning that we don't know if anyone considered that a factor in order for Kahn to grant Shang his youth, so Kahn had less of an excuse to not give Shang his youth and ensure that he is at full strength.
-After the Outworld Tournament, Shao Kahn bitches at Shang Tsung about how he failed him, despite the fact that, as shown by Kahn's own words and as far as Shao Kahn knew at that moment, Shang's plan was the only option they had. And Kahn's response to Quan Chi's plan implies that Kahn didn't do as much as lift a finger to handle Sindel's field which is a COLOSSAL obstacle in his way (then again, the events of the story seem to contradict themselves about how much of an obstacle that is to the invasion, as well as having unclear implications about the plot-wise reason to even have a Mortal Kombat tournament in a franchise called Mortal Kombat), which makes his bitching about Shang's plan all the dumper considering that, as previously shown, he did nothing himself but suggest ideas that he himself would shut down.
-Also, he is bitching at Shang about Outworld losing in the tournament, the same tournament in which everyone including himself lost!
Yeah, I think MK9 Shao Kahn is kind of a pretentious crybaby.
@@vaggos2003 That's exactly what The4thSnake said in his critique. Or…at least I think that's what he said. It's been a while.😓
@@GMKGoji01Actually, yes. Most of the things I brought up were also brought up in Snake's Critiques.

Another stupid thing is: participants can't fight for realms that they don't belong to which was the reason why master Bo' Rai Cho couldn't fight for Earthrealm in the first tournament even though he wanted to as he stated in Deception. This rule was totally ignored in MK9 because Shang Tsung was allowed to have the Lin Kuei and the Black Dragon who are all Earthrealmers on his team, making a gaping plot hole of why master Bo' Rai Cho just couldn't participate and fight for Earthrealm this time

MK Trilogy and PS2 era had strength on "Show, don't tell."
When the game shows Shang Tsung is strong, menacing, and near unstoppable in Deadly Alliance. Players can conclude that he's actually really strong and quite a deadly mastermind.
Even in Konquest mode, the character power level still following its own rules. Then the endings conclude who is the winner, what happened to them and everything else only left to the players interpretation to conclude which one is truly canonical.
Meanwhile in next gen era (MKvsDC and NRS)
The game is all about "Telling more and then show(badly)." because of its Cinematic Story telling the series are using now. Power levels are sidelined because good guys had to win, characters had to be a jobber because the story will be short without any fights.
"He must win because the plot say so."
"He must lose because the plot had to go forward, even though they are much more powerful."
"Shang Tsung said its part of the tournament, because he said so. Sometimes its not, because he wanted to."
and so on...
Sorry its a little too long but you'll get the idea. Peace. Love the video, love this channel.

Eh, mid way era still had instances of informed strength.
The PS2 era was literally the worse era of mk in terms of story lol
@@redninja3056 not really
Shang Tsung is the type of mf to call time out during a game of tag when he's about to be tagged out.
If you think about it, the 1V2 fights also go against Shang Tsung because if outworld loses them, two outworld fighters are eliminated
"You will face Sub-Zero of the Lin Kuei"
Love your content keep up the great work
I like to think Shang tsung decided to make the final opponent himself simply because he got bored and thought it would be entertaining to fight
2:12 Even with this deal, Johnny still won the tournament because the fight with Shang Tsung is basically an exhibition match. He's the tournament master and proctor, not the champion; Goro held that title after defeating the Great Kung Lao. So Johnny defeating Goro makes him tournament champion. No one ever brings that up. Liu Kang just defeated Shang Tsung because of his backup plan; if Sonya had accepted, it still wouldn't have counted.
This is going to be some "soul-sucking" entertainment, haha😂
Let's see, in the story mode Shang Tsung only gets four fights which are
Lui Kang vs Shang Tsung (loses)
Smoke vs Shang Tsung(As Sub Zero) with Reptile (HOW DO YOU LOSE THIS ONE!?)
House Maid (Kitana) vs Shang Tsung (loses)
Kung Lao vs The Deadly Alliance (loses)
I can understand when losing to Lui Kang but the other fights (especially the 1v2s) don't make much sense. Maybe when he turned younger, actually made him weaker.

#AChallenge
My first Mortal Kombat experience was the first movie, and then the cartoon.
I have a theory that "challenges" don't count for the tournament (unless the outcome is fatal) and vice versa. Raiden says that he can't participate, unless he is directly challenged, meaning that even people who aren't the tournament participants are considered fair game for this separate "challenge fights" system. Maybe it's a corruption of some earlier "exhibition matches" system, or something like that.
So when Shang Tsung declared the challenge between Scorpion and Cyrax with Sektor, their loss didn't mean their elimination, hence they could still participate in the tournament. And Sub-Zero was eliminated from the tournament in his fight with Sonya, but was still available for being challenged by Scorpion.
6:57 When Raiden approached Scorpion everybody else was leaving the courtyard, except Liu Kang and Kung Lao, who were waiting for Raiden. We have no indication that anybody was there who would report this conversation to Shang Tsung. Cyrax's talk with Raiden was explicitly witnessed by Baraka, who reported it to Shang Tsung. Maybe Tarkatan vocabulary was a bit misleading and gave strong connotation of "Cyrax conspired with Raiden".
7:58 Maybe Shang Tsung really wants Johnny's soul, because he already knows about his Mediterranean warrior cult ancestry with their hereditary anti-god buff.
Okay I tried my best to justify these things, but I've got nothing for Shang Tsung having authority to just decide that people are contestants, even against their will, or to officially declare one-on-two fights. Honestly, I'm still confused, why Shang Tsung, a clearly biased party, is allowed to host and organize the tournament. I would think that some neutral party would be appointed for that.
We really don't know if everyone was left the courtyard when cyrax talked to Raiden, and cyrax killing Johnny wouldn't get Shang his soul.
@@fightingmedialounge519 You seem to confuse two things I wrote. The courtyard conversation was the one between Raiden and Scorpion, and while there is no guarantees that there were no witnesses (other than Liu Kang and Kung Lao), there is no indication that there were any either. Shang Tsung not bringing it up in any fashion makes it a reasonable assumption that even if there were witnesses, nobody reported it to him.
The conversation between Raiden and Cyrax happens in Shang Tsung's Throne Room. We are shown that Baraka loitered behind the doorway and the look he gave Cyrax as he passed by showed that whatever Baraka saw and/or heard, he wasn't fond of it. Explicit witness, and Shang Tsung's awareness that this talk happened lets us conclude that Baraka snitched.
As for Johnny's soul... why wouldn't Cyrax killing him get Shang Tsung it? Shang Tsung seems to take souls of those who die in the tournament. Goro killed Great Kung Lao, Shang Tsung took Great Kung Lao's soul. I doubt there are rules forbidding this. I guess Raiden may intervene, but I'm not clear on how much authority he actually has over souls of Earthrealmers (seemingly enough to offer them as payment) and whether such an intervention be considered overstepping his boundaries at the tournament.
@@ssj5gogeta1310 wasn't really confused on that part. That would be reasonable, if not for the other instances of questionable writing making this appear pretty clearly as an oversight. Because that's not how soul magic works. The person either needs to kill someone directly and then take their soul, or be in close proximity so that the soul can be taken before it passes on. It's why Shao Kahn diretcly ask Shang tsung to step forward before taking his soul as oppose to just stealing his soul where he initially stood. Judging from where Shang tsung was sitting, he wasn't stealing any souls.
@@fightingmedialounge519 Well, I'm not claiming that writing is stellar or rock-solid. I just tried to justify the specific plot points brought up in the video for fun.
And... I don't think we know enough specifics about how soul-stealing works to definitively claim what is and isn't possible with it. Shao Kahn didn't order Shang Tsung to approach. He just called his name, then Shang Tsung approached, then Shao Kahn said "The empress requires something of you." and proceeded to take Shang Tsung's soul... probably along with all the souls he accumulated... before giving them to Sindel. I'm not actually even sure if what Shao Kahn did is the same brand of soul-stealing. Shang Tsung's body evaporated (though that might be because without those souls it aged to the state it would be at Shang Tsung's actual age, i. e. dust).
Still, if we argue purely range, it looks to me that in MK11: Aftermath, Shang Tsung was absorbing Revenant Nightwolf's soul from a much a greater distance then one between Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung in MK9. So I don't think being that close is required.
@@ssj5gogeta1310 I'm aware of what you were trying to do, but I'm pointing out that other moments of faulty writting throughout the game makes your assumptions less logical and more wishfulthinking. We know a fair bit about soul magic considering how many times it's used and the way its used. That's what I mean when I said he told him to come closer, and again he wouldn't have to do that if he could take souls from a distance. Funny you bring up mk 11 considering that also shows the physical effects soul magic can have. Also wouldn't say it's that great of distance, and it's still smaller than the distance between where Shang tsungs sits during the outdoor matches, and the actual arena they take place in.
