  • Century III. Forest Fair Village. If you're a dead mall fan, you're probably familiar with these once magnificent beasts. What does Minnesota have to offer?
Opening in 1977 with two full stories and a large lower level, Burnsville Center was and still is the largest mall south of the Minnesota River and north of Des Moines, IA (ignoring the Iowa malls on the extreme west and east ends of the state). The mall was designed as a large mall for not only Burnsville but all of Southern Minnesota.
Come learn about Burnsville Center's history including stories about the late comedian Pat Paulsen, Miss USA, Miss Minnesota, and Mrs. Pickburn.

Wow. I cannot believe how empty this mall is! I grew up in Burnsville. About 20 years ago, this mall was FILLED and busy. I remember coming here when I was a kid to see Santa. The mall was so busy you could barely walk through during the holidays. The first job I ever had was in this mall. Bittersweet. Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you for creating this video. I grew up in Burnsville in the 70's and 80's, and even remember playing in the dirt mounds along Burnhaven Ave. when they were digging up the land to create the B'ville Center. My friends and I spent almost all of our weekends there, cruising the stores such as Toys Plus, Kay Bee Toys, Woolworths and Swiss Colony. Who can forget running up and down the ramps in the middle of the center? When I was in my late teens, I worked at Carson Pirie Scott (87') until the early 90's.
I still go inside the mall every once in a while, but it is very depressing to see what has become of a place that holds so many wonderful memories for me.

Someone should return to Burnsville Mall to reshoot a new video. I work at this mall - and have for 25 years - I walked through the mall a few days ago, and am aghast! MANY of the shops you see at this mall, in this video, are shuttered - probably only 30 or 40% of the shops are open now. I'm sad at the prospects for the future - but remain hopeful - as my decades of work here, and the many friends I"ve made, still make me smile. Bless this place and all who are still here. Sad

This was my childhood/teenage mall me and my friends used to ride our bikes to in the early 80's. It had an arcade, movie theater, toy store, food court, book store, computer store ("Digital Den"), everything. The brown staircase at upper middle at 6:40 used to be like a stage area and I remember Darth Vader made an appearance there promoting Empire Strikes Back in '81, and the whole floor and railings on the upper levels were crowded with people. Even had a job working in the food court during high school. Use to come here with friends as a teenager as mall rats just hanging out. Those were great times! Sad to see the mall at the states that it's in now. It feels lonely/empty. I hope that one day Burnsville mall can make a turn around and become more modern and lively again like it use to be💛 there's hope still. And I hope this mall doesn't end up closing all together. This mall definitely defines my nostalgia.

I just read last week I believe that it’s under new ownership and they will be trying to revive it.

I grew up going to this mall all the time. The one thing I always will remember about it is that my parents would always park at the same entrance every time. Its the one right between JCPenney and Sears. I still remember walking in and the space to the right was the arcade, which you could walk through and come out over near the indoor entrance to sears, but then on the right side, in the space that was on the end and had a door to go outside was a pet store. I still remember seeing those poor animals in there every single day. All the dogs in those cages, and just wondering what happened to them when the mall closed for the day, and if they all would just get left there overnight. I feel like sooner or later the mall as a whole is just going to wind up abandoned completely. They keep trying to do something to revitalize it however the size of online shopping nowadays and the fact that the Mall of America is just a quick 15 minute drive away really was the nail in the coffin for this place. Will never forget playing Tekken in that arcade with my Dad while my Mom would shop.

Millions attempt and fail at trying to sound like Butthead, yet he can do it almost flawlessly, without even trying. FYE was one of the best stores there. I remember you could scan CD's and listen to snips of songs. There was an employee who worked there that became famous after American-Idol came to the TC in the early 2000's. He became infamous for juggling while singing in front of the judges. It was his crying/freakout reaction to the panel that made him popular. I'll never forget that.. I spent a ton of weekends hanging out here with a friend in which we would yoyo/devil stick infront of Airtraffic to help attract customers, employees were nerds that we got along with. Great memories.

I spent many school days skipping at the Burnseville Mall int he Aladin's Castle Arcade back in the 90s. IT's the best mall followed by Southdale, MOA, and Eden Prairie OG before the remodel. I purchased my first computer games, and NES games from electronics Boutique at Burnsville mall. I also purchased Counter Strike 1.5 there years later. It was in the basement next to the food court back in the day. Burnsville had a nice food court back in the 80s and 90s. I'm a bit of a mall connoisseur. Burnseville Mall did not look this bad even a couple years ago pre COVID. It was a bit empty but nothing like this. I feel like COVID put the nail in the coffin. Burnsville Center also had a sam goody which was renamed to something else but still was a store that sold physical media up until Pre Covid or so. Great Mall Great memories.
Burnsville Mall also had a pet store right when you walk in across from Aladin's castle which was cool. I got a 3 ring milk snake from the store as a kid, my buddy stole it and gave it to me. We asked to hold and and the employee was like we just got it in we can't hold it yet blah blah. My buddy reached in and ganked the thing.

I have massive fond memories of that mall. It really was the biggest mall in Minnesota up and until the megamall came out. I remember working at Nelson‘s office supply. That was in the early 90s. In the late 70s they actually had Darth Vader visit and it was a big production. At least it was somebody in the costume. I prefer the old look of the pit, the name most people call the food court.
burnsville Center management did not like the common name everyone gave it, the pit. they felt it was derogatory. Everyone else thought it was descriptive. Because it technically was in a pit.
A friend of mine used to work at Aladdin‘s castle arcade. He later work at Sears in the same mall.
I had one friend who worked at the UA theater in the mall.
I got my first dungeons and dragons box game at the mall. I remember KB toy store. Waldenbooks. And B’Dalton bookstore. they were at least two or three music stores. And I remember Dayton‘s when it was there was probably the biggest draw to the location. A bit of snobbery of people who shop there.
back in those days each anchor store also had its own toy store area.
I even remember a chuckle where my mom accidentally over paid her credit card with JCPenney. Apparently back that their computer system would apply interest on any dollar amount balance
she over paid her balance. And started earning 25% interest on a credit card balance. It took her six months to realize why she had a positive amount that kept growing very quickly. She should’ve shut her mouth. Because an overpayment of maybe 100 bucks ended up being a couple thousand by the time they figured out what was going on. They eventually sent her a check for the balance. And I think shortly after that they figured out the loophole on the credit card.
I really loved the suspended ramp that went out to the middle of one section and then made it to the lower section. There is of course the dual spiral staircase that was in the middle of the food court area.
I actually remember seeing somebody having a heart attack in the food court right next to it. I don’t know if he died but there were a lot of medical people around him
Thank you for recording this. I might recommend including historical photos and possibly even a list by the year of the stores at the locations. Maybe you could edit a liter edition with that information later on. Maybe do every five years listing the type of stores that were there if you’re able to get your hands on it

I hate gen Z and Gen X parenting. I'm Gen X 1980, and no I'm not a millennial. Because kids don't know or care what malls are now they are dying, due to the internet, but I don't feel like Parents now a days would go let there 6th, to 8th graders be dropped off at a mall with friends for a few hours and wonder around on their own. Too many helicopter parents, and too much purchasing stuff online. Now beautiful Malls where kids and teens once roamed carefree are dying, it's really sad. There was nothing better then hanging out in Malls looking at the structures, and playing video games in the arcades. Kids learned to socialize, meet girls, and be a functioning member of society learning to talk to people IRL, not only online.

I don't think the demise of the Burnsville Center can be entirely blamed on the opening of the Mall of America. I live in southern central Minnesota and hardly anyone i know goes to MOA. Not only is it further away, it has an image of being unsafe. Most of us i believe would rather shop at the BC if it were still a functional mall.
