Great video. Those pesky safety switches are always going out and getting clogged with dust. I finally cut all the green wires and wire nutted them together. I had juice to the solenoid, but the starter would not engage. I knew it had to be a problem with the green wires. I cut the green wires going to the PTO switch and wire nutted them together. After many hours of frustration I was relieved when she fired right up. Thanks for the help!

Sir I just wanted to say a quick THANK YOU. Thanks for taking the time to post this to help others. My Patriot was stuck in the back field amd wouldn't start, about 20 minutes before dark and yep...watched your video, walked up to the shop, found a small jumper wire and sure enough it was this exact switch. Saved my day !!!

Sounds exactly like my problem. Two year old Scag Patriot, first problem with it.
Will try it in the morning.
Great video, short and to the point.
    New sub.

Thanks for this great video. I have had this problem for the past few years when my Scag mower occasionally would not start when hot, but recently it started to happen on cold starts. Sure enough it was the PTO switch and your video helped me to easily find the problem. So thanks again for taking the time to post this video. Much appreciated. Saved me a lot of money.

Yep mine is doing it only when hot also and my pto switch is only a year old with maybe 100 hrs on it cause my mower is only 225hrs now. And on the 2nd switch!

Thanks for sharing that video. I knew I wasn’t getting power to the green wire on the solenoid. Even though my Liberty Z came with a manual with the wire schematics, I didn’t feel like looking at it. I figured id give CZcams a shot and I found you. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. This is exactly what’s happening with my scag. I had to push and pull the pto switch a few times in the past to get the mower to crank. Now it’s dead. New battery too. I’ll be ordering a new switch.

Hey man, thanks so much. Was out there with my Patriot a few mins ago & would not start after using it. This has happened to me previously several times in the last year and a half. Could never figure out why and always managed, at some point in time, to get it restarted. Anyway, as I was just waiting today came across your video. Sure enough, I just went out there now - the mower engage switch was Intermittent, just as you diagnosed yours. Machine started right up after I bounced the switch a few times. Tried it a 2nd time, wouldn't start and then bounced the switch and starts up! Will be calling Scag dealer tomorrow to see what the status is on new switch.
Your effort in posting this is much appreciated, thanks mucho! BTW machine is not quite 3 years old.

  • @thomascounts6891

Tried every switch, my Tiger Cub w same issue was a bad connection in electrical plug just off engine. Machine has 530 hours and-started this no start, or would just die while mowing. All good, and spare parts to boot. None of local dealers had a clue.

Replaced my PTO for the same problem on my Patriot. Mowed fine that day but back to the same old stuff the next day. Turned out it was the nut holding the two wires to the starter that was loose.

Thanks for the video. This literally just happened to me 20 minutes ago. I'll be testing mine in the morning. Last week the fuel pump failed on a garage kept machine that's not quite 4 years old and has only 60 hours and now at least one safety switch is bad. I'm sorry but I do have to question quality of components at this point. I'm disappointed in having to do this in such a short time span.

Thanks for the video. I've replaced my starter solenoid and still cant crank it with the key. I can turn on the key and then jump the solenoid with a screwdriver and start it up. So, to test to see if I have a safety switch problem from one of the 4 safety switches (including the pto), all I have to do is see if the green wire has 12 volts coming to the starter solenoid? Is the end of the green wire at the starter solenoid supposed to read 12v power with the key on? Thanks again.

    • @fishandwings6395
      @fishandwings6395  Před 5 lety +2

Sorry for the delay.I dont think you will get 12 volts from the green wire. Those wires just close the curcuit. You can jump each switch safety and PTO to see if you can get it to start.

Junk switches!! My mower has only 225 hours on it and on the 2nd switch already which only has maybe 100 hrs on it, and already messing up again! . My first pto switch went out when it was still under warranty! The week before the 2yr warranty was up! $10,000 mower with a .25¢ switch!! Had a john Deere 325 mower for 24 years still had same switch. Sold it to neighbor and it's still mowing . Bought my last scag! Not impressed with these mowers they mow like crap anyway!
