It will be interesting how this tech eventually makes its way down to a mid range or lower kits. 10k is a ton for a kit but this is pretty sick. I’d love to see a bop size kit and a 13 inch snare.

I hope they release "PDP" budget versions of these kits. But Roland, as they now own DW, probably don't want them to compete with their own e-kits, so probably not. I hope these won't all cost 10K, that is just ridiculous.

    • @1dudecrush

I wouldn’t be so sure though. Roland has a bunch of tiers of product. I think the DW launch here is almost more a proof of concept than anything else. This is obviously going to be even more prohibitive in cost than the TD50 or anything else has been thus far, but the technology they had to come up with to make this all possible is literally next level. I think we will see trickle down tech from this point. The interest is palpable from everywhere I’ve seen

4th time checking your channel today!! Finally a video on this kit:
    1) I’d like to hear what the set sounds like from the perspective of the people in the house. In other words my wife has no issues with the TD50 but will she hate this.
    2) I’d like to see a comparison to the TD50 (or other Roland modules). How much flexibility do I have to make changes? Can I create custom kits? Can I pick individual cymbals from the module or are you limited to a cymbal pack?
    3) will you be able to make and sell custom kits like you do today for the Roland modules
    4) can I use my TD50 pads and module to expand this kit? For example if I wanted to use my Roland pads as Rototoms or other percussion instruments can I do that?
    Thanks. Love the channel!!

    • @482jpsquared
      @482jpsquared Před 10 měsíci +1

      1) I have tried them. They are a bit louder than a TD50 kit, especially the cymbals.
      2) It is not a module. It's software with lots of flexibility to create kits.
      3) Check out the retailers. They list individual drums for sale.
      4) No. The DWe wireless components exclusively work with the trigger module. However, you can merge MIDI devices into the software using your computer.

I like everything except for the hi hat. Can you tell us if the hi hat is capable of moving more like the other cymbals with realistic movement? Also, when you open and close the hi hats while you’re playing it sounds fake (it just nuts the sound completely with no ambience following). Like I said before, if the hi hats aren’t moving naturally, that would totally annoy me to no end. I don’t how they would make a realistic kit with all pieces sounding and feeling great but then have a mediocre hi hat. That wouldn’t make any sense. Is that because you have them tightened that way…..hopefully you see this comment and respond to it. I would really appreciate it, thanks for your review, talent, and time to show us.

    Hey thanks Luke !!!
    Question:
What do you think is more responsive, with more dynamics ?
The Roland digital snare, hi-hat and ride, or the DW ones ?
    Basically...lol
Did DW take away the title from the Roland digital 3 ?
Like which has a better rim shot on the snare, etc and more positional sensing on the hi hat and ride ?
Can you get all the intricacies with metal hi hats as you can on the Roland digital 14 hi-hats ?
I'm in the middle of Pennsylvania, so there's not many music stores with edrums to try out.
I never played a metal e-cymbal so I don't know how they react to each hit...

Excellent! First of all, some really great playing along with an excellent review and run down on both the drums and software. You answered all of my questions regarding the ability to connect other equipment and software. I know this took a lot of time and effort and I greatly appreciate it. You have another subscriber and I look forward to your other videos. 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
I would also like to add that this concept of having an electronic kit wireless is a god-send and is something I've been contemplating for a very long time. The thought of eliminating all of the cables/wires from my electronic kit is a wish come true and was always a pain to setup on a gig. The option for either an e-kit or an acoustic kit is beyond what I was hoping for. We're getting two kits for the price of one and we all know that in the price it will include the cost for this new technology, I don't know how people can complain about the price when Roland and DW have their kits costing the same if not more, and you only get one kit. Worth every penny if you ask me.
I have only one concern and question; As for using my Roland TD-50, I'm sure that Roland will add the setup trigger type for these triggers on all of their drum modules. Do you know if they plan of releasing an update/firmware for adding this trigger type?

    Is latency still an issue?
If so, what does it depend on and are there any measured values?
Can I record MIDI and audio on the computer via USB (as with some Roland modules)?
Does it have USB to MIDI?
Does it work very well with EZ & Superior Drummer?
Are the two outputs balanced audio?
Does the snare also have the "sidestick sensor technology with hand detection" like the Roland digital snare?
Can I load my own multisamples (not just one shots) into the software and play them?

What I want to know is the latency in milliseconds. I don't buy that there is no latency to speak of when you're transmitting data wirelessly. If the latency is more than 5ms, I might not get a set. If it's less, I might consider it

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Před 10 měsíci +1

I definitely don't have the means (or motivation) to do any proper in-depth testing of the wireless/trigger latency. What I can say from using the kit however is that there's no perceptible difference between triggering a VST from the DWe and using another fast drum module like the TD-50X, so it's at least as fast.
No matter what connection method is used, they've all got some processing to do before sending the MIDI out (scan time etc), then of course there's the latency from your computer/interface which is present to some degree no matter what you use too.

    • @TheLeftistOwl
      @TheLeftistOwl Před 10 měsíci

These are obviously beautifully crafted, and will be of the highest quality build (and seemingly, by the sound of it) in terms of the samples and triggering. Yet, it strikes me as a bit of a miss in that having a 'real' DW, top of the line acoustic kit as the shells for a kit that--let's face it--most people will not be swapping back and forth (what a pain) from acoustic to electric, seems like an unnecessary luxury. It strikes me that one could buy a nice looking shell acoustic shell pack and good triggers for a reasonable price, and have beautiful drums triggering this same software, with probably the same experience. It is great that DW will be offering a variety of onramps, such as purchasing the individual components, like cymbals separately. If they do start to offer trigger packs, wow, what a competitor they'll be. Thanks for the intro video!

So excited for this and for the full review! If it's not on your list I'd love to add these suggestions!
    1. more about the cymbals! What models and makes have they sampled? How do they respond to tip and shoulder of the stick on the edge, bow and bell? How do the sounds compare to other VSTs like GGD, SS etc.
    2. Can you pick and choose each part like you can on other ekits? Almond snare with maple kick, this hi hat with that ride etc?
    3. Does it sense when you play into the head and out the head? Even on the kick?
    4. Can you use a bigger interface to send multiple out to front of house?
    5. How does the tension of the head effect the response, feel, sound etc?
Sorry for all the questions but this sh*t is ground breaking!! Also, new to this channel and loving it so far and nice to hear someone in the UK talking about this kind of thing as well!

I'll make sure all of this makes it in! For 2 and 4 though -
      2) Yeah, you can build kits out of any parts and the software can also load in multi-layered samples to build your own instruments
      4) Yes, you can use any interface and there's a host of routing options for multiple outputs if you need them.

Is there an option to connect these pads to an existing module via cables if needed? Also they should have added physical inputs on the midi module so you can add third party pads. Anyone who buys this is locked in the DW wireless ecosystem. Any addition will cost a fortune.

I wish you would of demonstrated how it sounds without the triggered sounds. How loud are the cymbals when you hit them with sticks?

Can someone please clarify if these are DW Collectors series shells? A video of how they sound played as an acoustic kit would also be very helpful in deciding if this can be a kit that scratches the itch a top shelf acoustic and electric kit all in one.

While it's a cool product as far as the technology and I'm happy to see some bold advancements, to me it seems like it's way too niche to be that successful. I feel like someone wanting a high end edrum kit is not going to pay that premium just because it is also a high end acoustic set, aside maybe from someone that was already about to jump on the VAD706, and someone wanting high end acoustic is not going to pay the premium just because it can be converted to edrum. So I really hope the tech trickles down in to more affordable options or even as going as far as offering it as an A to E conversion kit.

  • @GLASVILLE

Great video as always Luke. My question I'd be looking for an answer to is: I use a 7pc VAD706 (kick, 3 toms, 2 floors, snare & 4 crashes/ride/hi hat). It's used live at shows, running all the outputs from the TD50X to our monitor rig, using a splitter box for our A&H rack desk & then FoH to take their own feed, allowing the engineer 8 outputs to control the Roland kit. We already knew that a MacBook would be required as a module isn't supplied, but 1) can you use a new iPad Pro instead of a laptop? 2) How easy and could you do a video, of replicating my scenario, for those that would potentially use this DWe to replace their Roland VAD kit in a live situation & the steps/equipment required to make this happen? My worry is, the pay off for the reduction in 'cable snake' is offset with the additional equipment you need to do what a VAD kit does. Final question, I'd like to really know your honest opinion on DWe vs VAD706. Thanks, Joe.

The bells on the cymbals seems to be much more decoupled than others on the market. That probably kills a lot of ghost hits which plagues some company.

So wild to me that an 11k ekit doesn’t come with 14” hats and has exposed wiring under the head. For this kind of money NOTHING should feel less than high end.

Seems like the high hats don’t play as well as Roland’s digital hat’s hopefully they can tighten up the hats it’s always a soar spot , seems like the greatest strengths are its versa triggering style wireless tech and the ability for a smooth throw off on the snare but that high hat sample is coming through weird

My question: I’ve seen that there are zones for the tom part, the rim, and in between but would you say that one would be able to do timbale -like stuff on the toms? I guess, basically, are there more than three trigger possibilities on the toms?
