I've been watching you for a while but never commented. I really enjoy your content. I wish I were as smart as you when I was younger. My mother was the most frugal person I ever knew aside from you. Lol! She was from Czechoslovakia and went through war, Raised 3 children as a single mother, etc. She was so frugal I thought she was dirt poor. She ate well, and had nice clothes, decent car, but she never bought anything ever. She never ever went out to eat, and wouldn't even let me take out her out to eat because she didn't want me to spend money. She saved everything from the 60's & 70's including her vacuum cleaner from 1971. She yelled at me when i told her i was going to buy her a new one. I never did. Well she passed about 7 months ago at 92. When we went through her files, turns out she was loaded! We are still in shock. She never bought herself anything and left it all to us. You remind me of her.

It's sad to see that your biggest expense is health insurance, The health system in the US is filthy rich and is wrong. Imagine almost every person paying this premiums and for what? Whenever I seek medical attention the majority of times these people do nothing for you, they will see you like for ten minutes and prescribe you Tylenol or Advil and send you home with a 300 dollar bill 😡 The best health insurance for me is my diet also my biggest expense, no processed foods, lots of organic fruits and vegetables, wild fish and seafood, pasture raised eggs, grass fed meats and dairy.

I live on 1.400 with my adult daughter. I own my own home. I do not own a car. I am totally debt free. Life is fine, we live very well. However, food prices have risen so much, that it really worries me, but I cook everything from scratch and buying sale and seasonal fruits and vegetables works fine. We eat very healthy and well. I am a retired person living on a fixed income. I have a budget which is completed by my pension plus taking some money every three months from my savings. I make it work very well.

I am proud to say that I only spent $22 last month on dog/cat food and nothing on me because I had enough in the pantry. I had some unusual meals but they were nutritious!

Before I retired, my round trip to work and back was 70 miles; no reliable cell phone out in the boon docks so I have a flip phone costing $35 per month plus landline and internet service. Clothing for work was a constant expense. All of this to say life is less expensive now that I'm retired. Also a homebody and seem to be enjoying that!

Did you know after 40 we start losing muscle? I've been having the same problem with my weight. And was getting frustrated. So I did some research. What I found is we need to build muscle (not like body builders 🤢). Plus I eat a little bit more, so after dinner. I don't eat nothing else until breakfast. But I also been going on a brisk walk right after dinner. And this is been helping me.
I know everyone is different. But if I can help, that's what matters!

I’m concerned about you. As a healthcare professional, I know that fasting for long periods throws your body into starvation mode. That’s why we don’t lose weight because the body thinks it’s starving and holds on to everything. It also can cause ketosis (not a normal, healthy state.)
It’s not my business at all and I’m not trying to pry but I get worried about fasting for long periods.
I’m just responding as a fan and follower.

I am NOT a doctor. But, based on my own experience, anyone who eats little and has weight issues, please have your thyroid checked. The medicines are not expensive and can go a long way to relieving your frustration if you have an underactive thyroid. Judging on your seemingly healthy energy levels, Prepper, I doubt this is the problem, but just in case,.I believe it is 10% of the population has Hashimoto's disease, including myself. When you cut calories too much, you lower your metabolism to match and it harms hormone production. Do get your thyroid levels checked. Use an online calculator to figure your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) and increase your calories by 100 cal/day at intervals until you are eating at your TDEE without gaining wt, in order to improve your health and metabolism.

I live in Northern California, just south of San Francisco. As of March 11th, I have spent only $1690. First 3 months, my PG&E bill has averaged $67 a month. Gasoline has been about $60 a month. Got my car insurance lowered to $270 every six months through Mercury Insurance. Enrolled in their RealDrive program. One needs to show proof of odometer reading periodically via maintenance services i.e. oil changers, tire service, tune-ups. Got to keep it under 12,000 a year. Did all my major house upgrades back in 2020. 21,22, and 23 have only averaged about $13,000 a year. Still van-lifed around the USA visiting national parks, friends in Kentucky and family in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I did already invest in running gear, and cycling equipment years ago, so both these activities are free. Will retire in a couple of months, so my health insurance will be through ACA.

Here’s the thing - a lot of people can live on a low income by being super frugal as you (and I) do. The problem is not having any savings for emergencies. For me, that’s what the issue with poverty is - living on the absolute edge with no safety net and at the mercy of any disaster. It’s almost impossible to save in this situation and create that emergency fund. I know I’ll be able to live on a low retirement income (15 years off) because I’ll have a huge emergency fund and a paid off house. Living pay check to pay check, paying huge rent and a small income is just hell. Love the videos as always.

That means I only need to buy a bag a month. I like to add dehydrated apple and cinnamon or even use juice instead of water to change up the flavour.

Rootbeer (loved the way it smelled), and pineapple were my favorite sodas.I could eat a dozen glazed donuts, or a whole pecan pie in one sitting. That is why my health got so bad, and not eating enough vegetables back in the day.

Oh I cant wait to see your no spend year! I feel like you’re already so frugal more so than the norm so it’ll be interesting to see how creative you become to further strip things down. I also feel like you are super committed once you decide on something so I can’t wait to learn more. I feel like it’ll be different from other no spend year videos from other creators!

You can save money on cooking fuel (electricity or natural gas) if you use a rocket stove outdoors when you want to saute food in a skillet. Use dried, small branches (from your yard maintenance), strips of cardboard and paste board (instead of putting containers/boxes into the trash), junk mail (for kindling) and old, broken up pallets (salvaged) as free fuel for the rocket stove. Should the local power grid go down, you can use your larger solar power generators to power an electric skillet, a slow cooker, a rice cooker or a counter top pressure cooker.
You can also grow more of your vegetables if you make free compost from wet cardboard, vegetable peels and lawn clippings and then fill grow bags with that free compost. Tomato, zucchini and potato plants can be easy to grow during the warm months in temperate zone climates.

Does poverty level go by gross or net income?
The federal poverty guidelines, also known as the federal poverty level (FPL), measure a household's poverty status based on its annual income. The FPL doesn't look at just the income you take home-instead, your FPL is based on your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI).Feb 1, 2024

How is your car gas bill so cheap ? If you visit family and friends a lot .....do bike there or drive to visit them. Do you use air conditioning or does the weather where you are not fluctuate a lot?

I live in Sac and was almost going to close on a 2 br 865 sq ft (perfect for me!!) condo in Marysville for $160k and it only needed upgrades and a couple larger fixes that I was totally prepared to do (HVAC and shower). Was so excited. My job then said we had to start coming into the office more which would have meant a ridiculous commute so I cancelled the purchase. Lost money on the inspection and appraisal but I'm hoping the work situation will change so I can buy up there. It's cheaper than Sac. I dislike Sac very much and I'm only in CA because my mother is here. Your house is really perfect and your upgrades are fantastic. I love simplicity and minimalism. Clutter makes me lose my mind.
