- Originally from Syria, Laila Alhariri has been living in Germany for almost 7 years now and is currently finishing her medical studies at TU Dresden. When she first moved to Germany, it was nothing odd for people to ask where Syria is. As time passed by and the country she came from started to occupy the media, people started giving her looks of pity, compassion as well as despise and prejudices. All they think of is war, refugees and Pegida, however this is not the way Laila sees her country. The life, the culture and the nature - it all forms a picture so different of what everybody thinks! Listen to Laila’s story on breaking stereotypes about Syria and its people at TEDxTUBerlin 2019. Laila was born to a Syrian father and a Ukrainian mother. She lived in Syria and started studying medicine at Damascus university and later moved to Germany to continue her medical studies.
Living in Berlin, she was grateful to have found a peaceful home in Germany. Laila also tried to support refugees from her home country: whether through volunteering with children in Berlin or working in a refugee clinic/international practice in Dresden, which helped her perceive the gap expanding between both Syrians and Germans culturally and socially and she was able to learn directly about the misconceptions and clichés created about Syrians and Arabs in general, and therefore wanted to clarify some stereotypes as well as present the resemblances as a connection that brings them together. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Why is the audience so dry
🇸🇾✝️Syria was all Christian until the Muslim/Arabs conquered it in the the seventh century. Churches were converted to Mosques. Syria is still 16% Christian.
Syria is the ancient origin of the Aramaic language. Shlam Alechon!
هههه صوتها سورية و لهجة اكرانيه ع سورية lol
هي موالية وعم تمدح النظام
Christian, what the schnitzel is wrong with you?!
also, she talks about the diversity of syria.. and then says: “syria speaks arabic”!
have you gone to the north of syria (occupied by arabs) and seen how many languages are there ?
looks like she is the one who doesn’t know much about syria !
It’s still majority Arab despite many ppl speaking other leanguages
JESUS CHRIST IS RETURNING, REPENT OF SIN AND CHAN.G.E YOUR WAY OF LIVING
كول خرا ولو وجع راس ناس متلكون بتخلي الناس يأمنو بالشياطين
trying to give a good impression about syria by saying that it’s not just a small third world country in the middle east!
if that’s how you perceive the middle east, then why are you surprised about how people perceive syria?
Doesn't look like syrian for me.
Syrian, Lebanon, Palestinan, Jordan, Part of Turkey do look like European.
Ok, let's precise. She doesn't look like muslim women.
@@RasulAbuMuhammadAmin how should Muslim women look like?! ( I want say at we look just like humane)
Lol
Not all Syrians are Muslims educate yourself please
@@RasulAbuMuhammadAmin imagine thinking all Syrian women are muslims and they supposed to look in specific way.
