Gaga did well and was convincing. No knock on her, but this movie has been made 5 times. This character has been played 5x. Including 2 of the Greats in Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand.
Gaga is a singer that played a singer. Not a giant stretch or leap. Her American Horror was more of an acting stretch. Unlike Malek who is an actor playing a rock star with no personal experience to delve into and playing a iconic real person who's mannerisms gestures performance style is well documented and would always be compared to. Gaga was good but just not the best of the nominations. Not even in the top 2.
It just wasn't Bradley's night.

I never thought Bohemian Rhapsody will win. I was rooting for A Star is Born to win that category for best picture - Drama.

I've always loved lady Gaga ever since I went to her concert in 2009
Prior to The Star is Born movie I never paid a lot of attention to Lady Ga Ga, " "Stefani JoAnne Angelina Germanotta" her birth name. My 13 year old granddaughter was already a fan of her and her music. I knew she was a wonderful singer and her appearance in full make up & hair color was part of her image. This movie was amazing. I saw the last Star is Born in 1970s with Barbara Streisand, and Chris Kristofferson. GaGa is a totally beautiful, classy, gifted singer, and gifted actress and without her trade mark make up she was even more beautiful. I would never have known Bradly Cooper was so creative and had an interest in directing or a talent as a singer and musician. I'd already seen him in several other movies and he too is gifted and talented. Both he and Lady Ga Ga" wear many hats in the entertainment industry.

Let's be real. Bohemian Rhapsody as best film is a joke. Did they have to create a story, character or basis for the performances? No, almost all of it was as close to real as possible. There was zero creativity other than from the lead actor, and all he did was copy Freddie. ASIB was a remake in its story arc but the rest is all new. Different characterization, reasons to put the performances on the screen, new cinematography, the whole lot.
It's like giving a best songwriting award to someone reciting a book to a prewritten beat. Crazy.

Every song is sung live, period. The mixing engineer took both the live cuts and the studio lives, massaged them and out came all the music. It's not a live album in the traditional sense. Anyone who sings should know that immediately.

I thought both Cooper and Gaga did a really great job and I thought the movie was fantastic. HOWEVER, ASIB is a third iteration so the roles played by the actors are also iterations. Awarding an iteration is tricky and it's like a next level "who wore it best" but you can't even decide because the roles and presentation narration have changed even if the story is the same. This movie and the actors might get an Oscar nod but they will never get a win, except again for the song. I'm not surprised at their loss and it's not out of hatred; it's just a really tricky because it's been done. Also, it would be unfair to the others like Rami Malek, whose role was not an iteration in an iteration movie.
Both Cooper and Ga Ga-- "Stefani JoAnne Angelina Germanotta" may not possibly receive another award for their part in this very successful modern day version of ASIB. But, this has opened the door to the talent and creativity of of two extremely gifted performers both have something they were were " Born" with. Yes, the movie was a remake of other ASIB movies. I couldn't help but notice the quality of work each individual performer projected. Its going to be hard for anyone to remake this version any better.
You may be right but the critics have said this is the best version of the film they’ve seen so hopefully that will be rewarded.
