I'm not African American. While I don't know all the ins and outs of my family tree, it's highly unlikely that I share any heritage with these folks. However, they're singing about their faith and the glorious results of freedom found only in Christ and that connection I have with them is deeper than any that DNA can provide. YESSIR! JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS AND HE SET ME FREE! AMEN! AMEN! AMEN!

This is called a "shouter" song in our African American history. Our ancestors use to sing these types of "shouter songs" in slavery until "they felt they help comin' on" they sang it till it got good to 'em! I am 33 and I praise God for this heritage.

I believe this style of praise music has its' origin in the Gullah ring shout, which has it's origin in the Slave Christian tradition.
The amazing thing is that these songs have as much power now as they did then. When engaged in song and dance in thanksgiving to God for being the great liberator, the soul indeed is made free. Our heritage is Great. It must be preserved.

This is what church is all about! I am Southern Baptist and remember the old Camp Meetings and Tent Revivals where the saints of God would sing shout the house down. There was an elderly lady Granny Boger, and when the spirit hit that little Baptist grandma, watchout! Today's generation needs to experience the old time revivals and moving of the Spirit.

It is so great to happen upon these Hymn Choirs... Being a traditional Baptist, I often debate with my friend from "Word" Churches over what kind of music brings one into God's presence...My argument is that it is the sincerity of one's heart as one worships and not a music style (Contemporary Praise & Worship) that brings one in to the presence of the Lord....God inhabits the praises of his people. This video proves just that. A hymn from the heart will take me "in" any day.

I remember going to the Methodist church as a child, (early 60's) and some of old ladies would tap their feet, when singing some of the songs.I always liked that part. If I sat on the end of an aisle. I would look at everybody's feet and shoes as they tapped their feet.

It's so interesting to see how different Baptist churches are from region to region. I'm from a small-town Baptist church and our hymns were what we called Devotion Hymns - congregational call-responses, some people call them Dr. Watts Hymns.
I like this! It's new to me.

As a White folk I wish we could this kind of conviction in our praise music. I really can't stand the stuffy songs we have to put up with, many of them are dead and just don't have conviction in them. This is holy rejoicing and a powerful freedom song besides being an important part of Americas history- much more so than the European hymns.
