Its been 2years of me looking for the perfect bike to build I will eventually buy one and source most things from you or sites you reccomend. I'm glad I didn't jump in it right away because it seems tech is coming up faster than finding a Hayabusa in my area at the right price. You can crimp the connector with a vice. Be gentle closing the vice and do not over tighten. When crimping a connector you feel a stiff resistance at first as the connector bites through the cable's plastic insulation. Then it becomes easy to finish the last 60% of the crimp. You do not need to give a final "tight" squeeze, it only damages the plastic.

Reclaiming batteries should be like Folk Art it should understood but that's about all. No one wants old under/over cycled highly unpredictable cells everyone wants the new LG Panasonic Samsung cells. Why would you want recycle batteries when you can get 60+ Amp rated 21700/26650/3200P/32650 up to 10,000mah for $1-$13 each wholesale. Headway 10AH 100A cells are $15-$30 why are people dumpster diving for old batteries with a few dozen more cycles left in them... Maxwell 17v "SELF BALANCING" Super Capacitors modules which have over 1,000,000 cycles are $150 each from Mouser & Digikey and people loitering trash piles when it's trash for good reason seeing as It's trash compared to New(0 cycle) Lifepo4 batteries PCB balanced with Super Capacitors.

      The BMS is doing balancing to each row of calls. To hook this up to a solar system all you need to do is follow a simple guide online and connect it to your charge controller. Connect battery to controller first then panels. Controller usually decides what battery voltage its at and should take it from there, if its a cheapo change its charge voltage cutoff and float for lithium standards and you guys should be golden.

    Thanks for the great vids & ideas! One question I had was is that matching the cell voltage really that important? I believe those BMSs have balancing functions on their own and if it doesn't the user can balance it via one of those BattGO systems. I think the BMSs balance because on the last video when you were testing the BMSs overcharge protection, it was supposed to draw 0 but the reason it drew like 10w is probably because it was balance charging the other cells. I think this can make assembly and battery health monitoring much easier.
    Anyways. I think these projects are great! Please keep it up the world needs more of this :)

    Interesting 'stack.' The long Alodine stand-offs that are used as a 'buss' seems odd. Why? While Alodine is a 'protective' for aluminum, it's a chormate and remains HIGHLY resistant to electrical conduction. The threaded portions should be chemically 'de-plated,' if indeed that's a Alodine or Iridite coating.

    to assemble it with the BMS. I'm using an Outback Flexmax 60 MPPT
    charge controller and a 880 W solar PV array which has it's own SOC
    ability. I may need to go back and check the balance but for now I just
    want to get it working. I also have a Flexmax 80 and will eventually use
    it with another 4 panel PV array, for a total of 1800W. The cells I'm
    using are some pretested ones I just bought at the garage sale and a
    bunch from those medical 3.7V UPS packs. The next 350 cells will be from
    the scooter packs, for a total of 75X. Should be one heck of an
    off-grid powerwall system. These will replace FLA batteries. Outback has
    the program for Lithium chemistry but I still wan the extra protection
    of the BMS'.

      @@drprofesszor Yes, indeed, in America they have cheaper cells because they have lower import taxes and other things.
      But i mean, it isn't really all that bad here, except my country will put a "luxury" tag on any import over 50€, and then i have to pay them 10% of it's value.
      I overcome this by asking a seller to put a sticker stating that a package is a "gift" so it does not undergo any taxes.
      Also, you could try salvaging laptop batteries if you wish.
      Just a friendly reminder, don't ever buy from liito kala on AliEx, they are a 100% fakes with less than 1000mAh but advertised as 3000mAh.
      The reason why batteries are expensive here in EU is because there are a lot of safety regulations that they have to pass, so smaller manufacturers can't bother and won't sell in EU, leaving LG,Samsung and others to jack up the price.

    In the RC hobby we talk about balancing cells with NOT MORE THAN .1V/CELL DIFFERENT!!! But why?? Has anyone done a test to determine the amps drawn by an 18650 of regular resistance, when it's at say 3.8v and another cell is at 4 or 4.1v??
    In my belief, we might be too cautious, maybe by a factor of two or three. At least with LiPo, which we use in RC, which these days will accept as much as 5C charging without any degredation. on a mere 2AH cell that equates to 10A, and I wonder if connecting a 3.8V cell to a 4V cell won't go past those kind of limits. :)

    • @ahaveland
      @ahaveland Před 5 lety +3

      Not so much of an issue between two cells, as the low one would be pulled up while the high one is pulled down and they meet somewhere in the middle. Depending on internal resistance and chemistry, current could be up around 20A, but you'd usually see an amp or two with laptop cells.
      If you have 100 high cells vs 1 low cell then you could get a much higher differential and put lots of amps way over the C rating of the low cell.
      < 0.1V difference is a good guide and even better if the difference is as small as possible.
      This is of course magnified with bigger packs.

      @@ahaveland Fair enough, but then what is the regular person who isn't connecting 100 cells to 1 to do? Say three cells at 4v to one at 3.8v. Really cell count doesnt matter much i guess, as the IR of these
      liPo can be very low. My small packs are 10mohms

    • @ahaveland
      @ahaveland Před 5 lety +1

      @@friendlyfire01 3 cells at 4V to 1 of 3.8V = initial common voltage = 3.95 V, so low cell sees 0.15V delta increase.
      I=V/R therefore I = 0.15 / (0.010 + (0.010/3))
      = 0.15V / 13.3mΩ = 11 amps.
      You can do what you like, but my advice is to keep voltages as close as possible before connecting.
      edit: Or maybe 0.2V / 13.3mΩ = 15A. Still significant!

      @friendlyfire01 Před 5 lety +1

      @@ahaveland you're absolutely right, that's significant. For small cells like im using that'd be too much, a few dozen times and you'd find you had methane in the lipo causing it to puff up. Thanks @Andy Lee Robinson !

    • @ahaveland
      @ahaveland Před 5 lety

      @@friendlyfire01 Thanks! ps... it's not methane that puffs up lipos, it's oxygen! It is somewhat reversible if you charge and discharge gently while under pressure. Better that it doesn't happen, but the cell is still usable for a while. Just make sure you don't underdischarge them, and I know that's difficult to do with RC models when we need that last 10 seconds to land....

    Hi , your battery pack design is great. My only question is about your balancing, as you check the balance between the serial connected batteries on each board if I understand your construction correct. But isn't it the balance between the parallel connected batteries that is the most important? So that the number one cell on every board should match, then all number two and so on...
    Best regards, Niclas (from Sweden)

    The battery pack needs to be made out of ceramic. A 3D Plastic Printer should be used to mold the ceramic into battery holders with screw down terminals which screw down to the circuit board. This would eliminate the heat problem. Plastic is unsafe.

    You may be explaining this in a future video but I'm curious how someone would go about correctly sizing their battery setup and solar setup based on their bills from the utility?

    • @SidebandSamurai
      @SidebandSamurai Před 5 lety +1

      Pull a year's worth of bills. Add all the kw usage and divide by 12. This gives you your monthly KW usage. KW means Kilo watt or 1000 watts. Add 20% and that is how you size your battery pack. For Solar. Each panel is different. But you need the same number of panels that match what your average usage is. Add 20% so that you can charge your battery pack as well as be supplied by the panels. You must select a panel that has enough ampreage to add up to your monthly usage. You put pannels in series and parallel to get the desired voltage and current output. There is a lot of planning that goes into this. It is recommended your installation be permitted by your local city. Allot of math goes into planning. It's a lot like doing your taxes. You should have a basic knowledge of electricity and how ohms law works if you plan on doing this yourself.
