As Indonesian myself, I'm very proud by this. Not only she's from Indonesia, she still not forget Indonesian Food culture and success by it. I hope with this, Indonesian foods will be world-wide know by the worlds. Why? Well, Singapore is the hub between Westerner and Easterner. Just with souvenir from the shop alone would made people around the world know what a small portion of Indonesian foods looks like and taste like.
I hope the store will be more successful in the future.

All I know about "Bengawan Solo" is a river in Solo-Center Java. And those cakes are cheap here in Indonesia, and here in my country those traditional cakes usually sales in stall in small amounts, because those cakes are home made and done traditionaly here, and also those cakes can get stale quickly, well, I think for a shop its not an easy business.
Its very beautiful when people from all skin colors living together in peace and harmony. No place for hatred, evil racism and violence.

Who want to claim others when we already knew if it's from Indonesia or not. In this case Bengawan solo store, they informed us that she was immigrated from indonesia that's why we know where this food origin from. They're not claiming that this food origin is from Singapore. Unlike others country or media that didn't inform or claiming something belong to them while it's actually false.

I am Indonesian, I love those cakes, I used to eat them a lot in my childhood time. But I am no longer in Indonesia, I couldn't find those kind of cakes here. It is sweet of her to bring the cakes to Sgp and introduce them to the world! They should open one in Germany.

It turns out that there are many enthusiasts of Indonesian traditional cakes who like them in Singapore. cakes from Indonesia are famous for being delicious ... To be frankly, after watching this -ads- news, some Indonesian might be thinking, "Why didn't she opened her store in Indonesia instead of SG?", some Malaysian might be thinking, "Kueh lapis is also part of our heritage, why did she claimed it was from Indonesia?". @@sabunkompas There is a Bengawan Solo stall in Indonesia. Last time I was in Jakarta there was one in Mall Ciputra. Actually Nusantara has a shared heritage and there are lots of foreign influences from China and India too.

fun fact: never saw Indonesian bought this (well because basically these are Indonesian traditional cakes & kueh),
actually never heard it before my Singaporean colleague brought the kue lapis to our Jakarta office and thought to myself "ini mah kue lapis legit" haha..
but what i appreciate the most is they escalate the initially traditional market snack into somehow a more elegant look to gain vary customer especially tourists

Bengawan Solo is actually the longest river in Java island, Indonesia. I live 500m from this river.
Indonesian snack or Kue is really tasty. I am really proud and happy that people in Singapore really enjoy it...

The irony is, there are outlets for this store in Indonesia, where the owners originated.
Yet people rarely notice or care about them, seeing that it is selling traditional snacks and not western-style treats.
It goes to show that sometimes another country can fully appreciate native cuisines/culture more than the actual natives.

I'm just pointing out the other comments here who claim that they never even heard of it in Indonesia. Whereas when I visited several malls in Indonesia, I ran into the stores and had even purchased some treats from them. And I only know just recently how big it is in Singapore.
But it's basically a common issue in other countries, not just about Bengawan Solo. Some food varieties (such as churros, kimchi, etc) can become a big hit in foreign countries, while being overlooked and considered street snack/every day meal in their places of origin.

What, come onnnnn you can find those traditional snacks in traditional markets easily. Why should I buy overpriced traditional snacks from overseas food chain, while I *can* buy the same things from mothers near me who made and sell those snacks in a small, home-industry scale? (And yes I/my family bought traditional snacks almost everyday. Those were even my breakfasts when I was living by myself in my uni days)

Kue lapis legit, kue pandan, putu ayu, kelepon, etc. Same name but different taste. Easy to find them all in Indonesia coz that's our traditional snack. She was from Indonesia, borned in Indonesia, i believe she made it from d traditional pastry or snack of Indonesia when she was younger before she came to Singapore
So yeah, if u wanna taste it with cheaper price, various traditional pastry n maybe more delicious, come to Indonesia. Do not forget to taste our local fruits too :)

Kek lapis (we call them that in Malaysia) is very popular here, especially in the state of Sarawak because of the close proximity between Kalimantan and Sarawak. It is believed that the recipe is brought down by the people of Kalimantan

@@bobbyhartanto6827 i have. Tbh its above average, but doesnt justify the price tag. If you tried a standard priced lapis legit for example around 10-20 dollars it is superior in taste compated to the 65 dollar bengawan solo price.
That being said there are places in Indonesia that will charge from 300 dollar upwards for a the finest quality lapis legit.

I'm Indonesian, never been to Bengawan Solo (the shop), but I know the taste of everything shown in the video. It's all traditional cake, never know it was popular in Singapore.
For those who ask: bengawan solo is a river's name in Java, Indonesia. The name is used because the shop is selling mainly indonesian recipes traditional local snacks.
Although the brand is famous and located in Singapore apparently (I have no idea since those cakes I eat almost everyday growing up, surely they're selling it overpriced there. Though it's fair considering the rent and everything).
I never heard about this in Indonesia. However, if it about a river on middle of Java island then I know that 🤣🤣

"Bengawan" literally means "river" in Javanese (in high register, the low register version is "kali"). Bengawan Solo refers to a specific river in Central Java.

When the first time ever travel to singapore i bought bengawan solo moon cake at changi airport as a gift for my friend. And he said.."you said you're going to singapore." Lol. But i can say bengawan solo make high quality and delicious cakes and cookies.
the title confused me a bit as first time i read it. but actually, after watch it, it's not about claiming, but the content is telling about how a person moved to singapore from indonesia a while ago, try to make INDONESIA'S CAKE and sell it, and respectly it now generously knowing. Very nice, as the world may know Indonesia is a big country with a rich culture, and these culture is mixed with a very delicious traditional cake.
Just go to indonesia, then go to local villages in java. Ask locals for "kondangan" or "tahlilan" ceremony if any, you'll get those cake for free.. 😁

To be fair Bengawan Solo is only well known in Singapore. I actually love their kueh and cakes. Expensive but quality ingredients
They are selling Indonesian kueh, not Singaporean and as an Indonesian I have to applaud their branding success story.

Bengawan Solo is a popular song from Indonesia. The shop's name is a tribute to her native land.
Well, Bengawan Solo is actually a famous river in Indonesia with a legendary song written about it long before this cake shop ever founded. But I'm happy for the name getting famous one way or another.. It seems that the shop specially sells cakes that are famous here in Indonesia.

What i like about Singaporean is even this cake have been around for a long time, they still respected it as Indonesian cake not claming that as their own like the other country
I wonder why there are so many negative comments about this video. It is just about this Indonesian lady, Anastasia Liew who migrated to Singapore and became a successful entrepreneur pursuing her passion for bakery. Obviously she had brought along recipes for cakes and kuehs from Indonesia. Bengawan Solo had since slowly add on local Malay, Peranakan and Chinese Kuehs to their product line. Example the Ang Ku kueh (Red Tortoise Kueh) is of Chinese/Peranakan origin. Maybe "Bengawan Solo conquered Southeast Asia" is misleading but they sure have made these Southeast Asian cakes and snacks famous. For those who never heard of Bengawan Solo, their Chiffon Pandan Cake is a best seller at Changi Airport, especially to the Hong Kong, Taiwanese and Chinese tourists.
I see so back in the 70's she moved from indonesia, seems she makes the all favourite cakes from here, well for all singaporeans and fellow asians if you visit indonesia and wish to see all similar shops like this in google maps use the term 'toko kue jajanan pasar', every city has their own version, like in bandung here we have kartika sari, purimas, sari-sari (do visit sari sari), etc
Toko kue jajanan pasar is sort of my favourite place really, all kinds of food from mini savoury to mini sweet cakes, klepon, bugis, lapis legit, lapis malang , bolu ubi ungu, talam, chiffon pandan, kue clorot etc are sold, and also nasi bakar, nasi rames, nasi begana, bihun goreng all in small packages, and all the kripiks (chips) kripik tempe, kripik talas, etc so if i wanted a colourfull breakfast meaning not sure whether i wanted a sweet or savoury theme, and just wish for tiny portions i just go to theese kind if stores (open from 6am to 7 pm) , now since im mentioning this i suddenly want to go to sari sari 😁
This is what makes Singaporean different than Malaysian. If this shop is owned by Malaysians they'll claim these food as Malaysian and give no credits to Indonesian.
Guys, come on, you come to Indonesia and it will be too easy to find those kind of so-called legendary cakes even in small shops in traditional markets. But wait, about the freshness and quality of its ingredients, i think Bengawan Solo has its own level.
