  • Working with students from the London College of Fashion, we've created digital animations to show how three of Cristóbal Balenciaga's iconic designs were constructed. Created through skilful draping of the finest silk taffeta, "Almost air-borne" was how Vogue described this dress. Great swathes of fabric, supported by hoops, are drawn towards the back from the centre front seam. The skirts are shaped through 'bagging out', which creates spacious voids which fill with air as the wearer walks. At the hem are ties which knot above the knee, lifting and ballooning the hem for yet more drama.
'Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion' was on display at the V&A from 27 May 2017 until 18 February 2018.

What do those inner ties accomplish? The draping was fascinating!

I guess those are ties breaches which Balenciaga was inspired from the bullfighters dress in spain. Those tie-ups around the knees help in giving a lift the gathers of the dress from the front to make it look voluminous.

if only i was young enough and had the body...balenciaga's designs never seemed stale. and to compare to more contemporary designers, the trash that is churned out as fashion today...sad, sad, sad.

Looked like a modern, smaller version of a pannier. Look up 18th century dresses and you will see the same shape, but usually wider.

@@venus_envyyes i agree. It would have fabric that would sit along the sides of the legs to keep the hoops from collapsing in on the skirt.
      Absolutely fascinating!
