MARAMING SALAMAT.

    Well, at least I know you can grow romaine in the PH now.
    It saddened me watching the soil get ripped apart though. Deep tilling sterilizes the soil. It pretty much forces the grower to have to use fertilizers and often anti-fungals or insect killers. The net effect is a loss of income for the grower.
    Suggest that you read about no-till farming which is very successful in any growing region as far as I know. It is also called regenerative agriculture or sustainable agriculture. You will often have to do an initial, very deep tilling or even turning of the soil and work compost down into the soil and then allow the compost to break down some. This is also the time that you would create the shape of the beds, set the width, paths, etc.... You then use 2 techniques either in combination or one or the other. One is to add a lot of compost to the soil on the surface. It provides almost everything the plants need. Or to say it better, the compost feeds the life in the soil, where there is bacteria and helpful fungus that the plants need to feed them. In a natural system, plants shed leaves, woody materials, or annual plants die off and leave their plant material to die and break down, becoming food. The life in the soil will pull this down into the ground and consume it. The life produces waste material that the plants need. The other issue is plants create sugars from photosynthesis. The root systems of plants are a two way transport system. The plant will store sugars, or carbohydrates into the soil. This also feeds the life in the soil which in turn feed the plants. If the plant gets stressed and needs the carbohydrates it can pull it back into the root system and into the plant.
    This isn't theory, it is fact.
    The other way farmers do no-till is to always have plants in the soil with at MOST a day or two with nothing there if the bed requires preparation. The goal is to always have photosynthesis happening. This continually feeds the life that's in the soil. They will plants mutliple plants in the same bed, to where they can be near harvesting one crop and they've already transplanted another crop into the bed. Entire plants are never removed except for root crops like potatoes, carrots, beets, etc..... The plants are cut off at the soil level so it dies, but the root system is left in the ground providing nutrition as it breaks down. If you need to feed a bed, and compost isn't enough, you can grow cover crops that can be killed using the appropriate method for that cover crop, then often it's covered so the cover crop dies off and then a crop to be grown for food can be directly planted into the bed after the cover crop is dead.
    When you do the type of soil prep you are doing, you lose fertility and over time you lose soil because there is nothing that's building it up. Adding compost helps, but it's not a complete solution on its own. Leaving the soil intact with only a very light surface tilling and smoothing to get rid of weeds will leave almost all the life that's in the soil alone. When you build up a raised bed and that soil drys out and there is no photosynthesis, the life in the soil dies.
    On the other hand regenerative agriculture builds more soil. One solution for low lying land is to have permanent raised beds so you never had to dig into the soil to redo the raised bed for every planting. That's probably the best solution. Of course this means having a frame around the bed to keep the soil in place, and that is an investment. But it helps with so many things such as working with the plants that the benefits are worth the investment.
    When a person is able to make their own compost, there is nothing that needs to be purchased once the beds are established. You never need to add more soil because the soil is being built up over time.

      this is true...hope a lot of farmers will understand this concept. Just like how a forest works. No tilling, no fertilizer, no pesticides, no irrigation but turns to a lush of greens.

    Hi is there a reason why there is a big gap between the ground and the plastic? Can you also cover the garden beds completely?

    • @dianacascayan1759
      @dianacascayan1759  Před 8 měsíci

      Isang factor din ang space Ng cover bet. the ground which is the higher the cover the lower the temperature inside the cover Po. Lettuce prefers low temperature areas since upland crops Siya.
