    Did you know Paradox also published a game quite similar to Total War: Warhammer? King Arthur II: The Role-playing Wargame. It's half Total War (with spells and a ton of myth units), half choose your own adventure.
    One of the great predecessors to the Total War series is 1994's Master of Magic. What units you recruit depends on the species of a given settlement, and there is a lot of neat magic you can use. This game had a big influence on Master of Orion II.

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel Před 4 lety +1

      I preferred the original 'King Arthur: Role-playing Wargame' Collection as opposed to the sequel. Besides the interesting but more linear original campaign in it, the DLCs added a more open sandboxy campaign option, along with more faction and troop variety to play, and that's when it really hit the spot for me.
      My one big complaint was how the framerate seemed to be locked at a lowly 30fps no matter how fast your machine. I believe there was a cap on RAM usage, too, as many games did back then but there was a way to remove that if needed. I don't recall the mem limit being a problem, just the mediocre framerate. Still interesting, unique, and the open campaign was cool.

    • @NickConte3
      @NickConte3 Před 4 lety

      Hey, mate. First, I would say that there is very little risk. You can pick up Napoleon for dirt cheap on a Steam sale.
      Second, I haven't played Warhammer, but if you've played and enjoyed the historical titles, then yes, Napoleon is worth it.
      Essentially, it polishes all of the mechanics from Empire but with smaller scope. It has a lot of good mini-campaigns with interesting twists. The Grand Campaign itself is a mini-campaign compared to most TW titles, but it's fun, which is the important part.
      I highly recommend you play with a mod, though. At least use DarthMod, which is essentially vanilla+. Napoleonic 3 is a good historical mod with a decent online community too.

    12:12 "it's mostly down to the AI" as is the case for most single player strategy games unfortunately. Cause no matter how many features you tack on it'll be boring if the AI I'd brain dead.
    Which is probably why a lot of popular genre's either rely on the player making their own content with a little stimulation from the AI or just throw out the AI all together in favor for multiplayer

    One of my favourites from my childchood was Pacific Warriors 2.
    Very simple game: it tells the story of US-Japanese war in the Pacific that you can play from both sides.
    Each side has 25 missions for which you get points depending on how well you perform to upgrade your planes: a fighter and a bomber, with more machineguns or better maneuverability.
    Controls are very simple - no overcomplicated BS like in World of Waplanes.
    Missions are very varied and most of them are based on the most famous battles such as invasion on Philipines or battle of Midway. You have escort, scouting, invasion, bombardment etc. missions with both ground and sea targets alongside the aerial combat.
    But if you prefer something with a bigger focus on strategy then Empire Earth is another classic RTS I played when I was 6 years old - one of my first games ever played alongside Shogun Total War and Civilization III.
    It's essentially Age of Empires but instead you play through all the ages of human history - from prehistory to future age with robots. In a custom game you can pick in which era you want to start in and which era will be the last if you want to leave out the robots and skip on the prehistory for example.
    There are major single player campaigns with various missions set in different time periods like Roman empire, Wilhelm's conquest of England or WWI.

    If we're talking about old-school classic strategy games, then we have to talk about Bungie's "Myth" series. Eschewing the usual "build base, harvest resources" of other strategy games of the time, "Myth: The Fallen Lords" gives you a handful of troops at the start of each mission, and that's usually all you have for that mission! It really makes you value each swordsman, each archer, especially considering surviving soldiers pass on from mission to mission, gaining experience and becoming more powerful! I'm really not doing the series justice at all, but I think it would be great to see an episode about it here!

    if you're into grand strategy with real map movement and real time battles happening on the same map as the strategic layer (think ancient/medieval Supreme Commander but bigger with the same kind of zoom levels) try Longbow Games' "Hegemony" series.

    Games from 10 years ago aren't old. Thats Skyrim, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Bioshock, Witcher 2, Red dead redemtion, Assassins creed 2, Dragon Age Origins. They are more or less the very same games as of today only with older graphics and often smaller worlds/maps/levels but with deeper gameplay and stories in many cases:P You need to go a little further back to find the older titles which differ from the norm and had so much innovative and original ideas. But sadly often comes with clunky cameras or controls.
    I would recomend Fable the lost chapters, Age of empires 2, Jade Empire and Okami if you haven't played any of them though as they are all easily available and playable on PC and all hold up to this date both gameplay wise and graphically. There are tons of other games I could recomend but they are hard to run properly on modern systems and harder on the eyes in 2020:)
    I love Knights of honor and play it to this date. I'm really excited for Knights of Honor 2, coming 2020 presumably.

      Yeah a little. But most games have barely changed in 10 years, they have just gotten a little more eye candy:) I can buy a brand new AAA game today and it will more or less play and function exactly like a 10 year old game only with some better graphics and slightly bigger worlds/levels.

    Looks like they might have campaign multiplayer in the sequel, from the steam page: "Robust Multiplayer - Join with multiple friends to take on the challenges of medieval Europe"
    Definitely one of my most favorite games of all time. When I saw, maybe a couple years ago, that there's a possibility for a sequel or spiritual successor in the works, I got really excited. Glad to see it finally coming to fruition, and hopefully it's every bit as great as the original. Also hoping for a more challenging way to play, since the original KoH can get pretty easy, even when you put yourself as a disadvantage.

    I'm gonna take this opportunity to shill one of my favorite hidden gems of all time, Original War. The game can be clunky and old but it does so many things incredibly well. The premise is that the Americans and Russians are fighting over a special resource by time travelling back to super early stone age. Every unit is named with stats and if they die, they die for the whole campaign. You cant produce more units in matches so you have to be careful with your units and find ways to supplement them like teaching cavemen to use Ak47s or using drones. It's a really unique game that history has forgotten.

    It saddens me that I never came across this game as a kid, I used to be (and still am for the most part) very fond of medieval kingdom building games with RTS combat, I remember spending entire days playing Lords of the Realm and AoE 1 and 2, I would have absolutely adored this game as a kid.
    I probably wouldn't be able to get into it now, as having experienced games like Total War has kind of spoiled me, but I am very much excited for the upcoming sequel, I hope it stays true to what old players liked about the original.

Stronghold 1 & Crusader 1, though MandaloreGaming recently-ish covered it, still, it's getting a new game soon, Command & Conquer 1 & Red Alert 1 have been teasing at its remaster/remake for a while, might be nice to shine a light on that, see if we can get some of that old RTS back if/when it does hold up

    KOH2 is by far my most expected videogame in 2020. Which is a little bit unfair, considering that I have huge hype on a game made by, essentially, a really small studio that managed to rescue the trademark of an old game. That being said, people that worked on the original one are working on this one, so it's clearly a passion project for them. I really hope this will be a success story. The gods know Strategy genre needs a win outside of Paradox and CA.

    Amazing how it took Creative Assembly till at least Empire Total War to have something like this province system and then only managed to be this advanced by Rome 2/Atilla or the food supply system of Three Kingdoms when these guys were able to do so in 2004. Additionally, even though the actual units are a bit dated, just having the flavor of unique units to countries and even regional differences is quite impressive forethought.

    General tips for people looking to play: Pick two cities to build your armies, use Calvary only armies to deal with rebels (rebels are weak to them being mainly only peasants and Calvary only units move very fast), BUILD UP YOUR ECONOMY, whether it be trade or infrastructure you need a lot of resources, also keep your attacking armies in pairs, invest in your Marshall’s get them skilled, don’t be afraid to let somebody raid your villages, make alliances with the powerful nations and lastly use spies a good spy play can cripple a nation’s economy, military or political standings.
