    Good video. I’m not a big believer in warranties. Doesn’t take much to void a warranty. Could be something like nailing too high . Just pick a good shingle and good contractor you should be able to get 20 to 25 years. The organic fibre shingles of the past failed after only 12 years.

Per Owens Corning requirements, must use 4 components, but the contractor said that since he will be installing the UDL-50 by Owens Corning my roof is eligible for the 50 years and 10 year labor warranty. Thank you for pointing out the CONS of a manufacture's warranty. I'm going to have my roof replaced next week. My roofer only offers a 7-year labor warranty. The main reason I want to purchase Owens Corning Preferred Extended Warranty because it includes a 10-year workmanship coverage for I'm unsure whether the roofer will still be in business in the next 7 years. Other than that, I take the OC warranty with a grain of salt. I've never bought an extra guarantee for anything, except for the roof and foundation of my home.

    He is correct. Once one of them said 50 years. They all had too.
    He should've also expanded on non prorated verses prorated more.
    Contractors have gotten in on the extended warranty lie as well ripping the homeowner off. I've seen many more contractors do shoddy work than shingles fail. Especially in blow off situations as mentioned in the video. You could have the best shingle and if it wasn't installed right. That voids any warranty or makes the shingle fail sooner than expected. There are so many factors in making sure its installed right.
    Atlas shingles are junk. They may have some upper tier versions but their base shingles are junk, same with IKO. They both offer slightly better warranties because they have to. Why else would you buy a Hyundai? Because of the 100,000 mile warranty right? The best of the base dimensional shingle is hands down Certainteed Landmark.
    Pay the extra money for it.
    Contractors will generally push Atlas and IKO because they're cheaper at the local supply house than Certainteed, GAF, or Owen's Corning, putting more money in their pockets without the homeowner knowing. Most people dont know anything about roofing materials. I would suggest any homeowner to educate themselves and not let the contractor dictate what materials they should use unless you did the research beforehand. Learn how the components actually work together on your roof. Improper ventilation will also void a warranty and is a major cause of why shingles fail.
    As with any business, roofing supply houses stock materials that are cheaper for contractors to have a choice. It's how they stay in business and they dont give a shit about the homeowner. Their point of sale is towards the contractor only, rendering them not liable in all but a few situations.

      I was one of those salesman, I was young and dumb and thought the money would be good. A lot of these companies such as power remodeling and the one I worked for would makes us go on and on for 2 hours at homeowners houses with a script that our Gaf timberline hd shingle is the best shingle in the world especially with our 50 year “lifetime” warranty that covers wind and leaks and all the this and that which was complete BS. We would charge 750 per square and saying we install them yet it was a subcontractor. I noticed later on I wasn’t making any money as a salesman using my own car to go all over and BSing the customer and left that place. Sleezy salesman are still out there over charging and putting ppl in debt with these roofs that a reputable local roofing contractor can install for a better price and backs there warranty.

    Quality contractors who install quality products. That's how you get the most for your money. Hire local guys who stand behind their workmanship because they have to when they call their place of business home. Just because one part of the country has issues with a certain shingle doesn't mean you will. Every plant manufactures shingles with a little different recipe which can sometimes lead to a defect that effects just one region.

    • @andrewquinn7113
      @andrewquinn7113 Před 5 lety +1

      @@RooferNews I've never had a manufacturer rep mention anything about a shingle being better or worse for a certain region. Shingle manufacturers have plants set up all over the country. It keeps shipping costs down to allow retailers to cycle their inventory better. What happens though is raw goods are sometimes different region to region. This greatly affects color. Occasionally a single plant might purchase some bad raw goods, i.e. asphalt, fiberglass strands, ceramic granules etc. Or for a shingle plant to have an equipment malfunction. If those bad shingles get out and get installed, you have a regional defect that can cause rumors about quality to surface. Only a single plant was affected, a single production run. On the whole, shingles from that manufacturer in the rest of the country are still delivering on advertised quality. It only takes class action by homeowners for an instance like this to tarnish a shingle manufacturers reputation.

    What about the high use of cheap steel flashing on over 90% of roof shingle installations, that will often fail before the lowest 25 year shingle, and voids the warranty? Aluminum gutter coil can be used to make flashing, which is thicker, lighter, easier to cut and nail through, and will not rust, even if the paint surface fails. Also, their cut off scrap would be worth over 10X per pound at the scrap yard. Steel and aluminum gutter coil is the same cost per square foot, so it is not even more expensive.

    I thought I posted a comment yesterday but can't seem to find it. What I would really appreciate is if you could explain why OC, GAF, CertainTeed, Atlas, IKO, BP, and God knows who else, have all had class action lawsuits against them. They all settle, make the lawyers super rich, the homeowners get pennies on the dollar, and the companies never admit they sold a defective product. I get it that there are poor installs with poorer ventilation but these companies have other lines that were not included in the suits, which tells me they do have products that can better survive poor installs and poor ventilation. I've read plenty of homeowners horror stories regarding how these companies will not back up their warranty. Warranties seem useless. I think you need to know a person in the QC department that can tell you what lines to stay away from.While I'm ranting, wouldn't it be great if the installers could educate the homeowner wrt ventilation. Why not provide a ventilation assessment and if a home requires more ventilation, add a line item in the contract that gives the home owner an option to include it. If they don't, then the home owner should accept the possibility that their shingles may fail prematurely. Human nature being what it is, maybe the town inspector needs to perform a roof ventilation inspection before the installer can start the job. That means they may have to go into the attic and identify any problems with insulation blocking air flow.

    So after 8 years my roof shingle started to fail. The wind can get to 50 MPH in gusts here and there was tabs breaking off and I lost a 12 ft section of caps from the ridge on the windward side. These were supposed to be IKO 25 year shingles. Talked to IKO and was asked a few questions. Who was the installer. Did not know as I was second owner of house. How many nails were used to attach these shingles to the roof. 4 was the answer. EHHH wrong answer. The shingles I used to temporary replace the caps were IKO as they were available from a local building supply. I read the fine print for installation and IKO needs 6 nails per shingle to satisfy their warranty. Even though the tabs were failing not the main shingle and the nails pulled through the caps leaving the nails behind. IKO denied warranty after 8 years. Replaced roof with interlocking metal shingles for about 1.5 times the price of asphalt. I am done with asphalt.

GAF has been the longest running company in America and the largest and has the best Warranty, they're Timberline HD shingle will go up against any comparable shingle in the market. I find it easy to show them the difference in the shingles. Take a camera with you and get photos of the defects you see. Eventually you will be able to show enough photos to your customers of the defects.
      The best way to destroy the competition is to go after their materials. I had one guy tell me before "I have never had my ass handed to me before I even got to the customer. I have been selling 25 years and never had my ass handed to me like that before I even spoke".
      It is so much easier to sell now than 20 years ago with tablets and laptops. I never go to a estimate and look at a roof with out something to show the customer exactly why they need roof work. At the very least I add to my collection of pictures for future sales.

    Asphalt shingle manufacturing is relying on deceptive marketing and false hope. They prey on the hope that you the homeowner Will trust that they will hold up their end of the bargain when their poorly developed and falsely advertised product fails miserably. The manufacturer will blame the installer. The installer will blame the insurance company; the insurance company will blame the manufacturer, again they blame anybody but themselves. My familys house that has the clay tiles installed in the 1950s they are still strong have had zero leaks... shingles are pure garbage here, and clay tiles are made so expensive here no one can afford them. Overseas about 1k for a tile clay roof for a 2000sq ft house 🏠 just in materials, here the clay tiles are not even twice that price they are unaffordable craziness...

      +Jeffrey Logan first year in business I replaced roof for elderly couple with husband on disability. Their roof was 7 years old by biggest brand. They got certificate for new shingles. Worth $800. Roof cost $7000. I have them everything at my cost because I felt horrible for them. They needed to replace leaky roof or their insurance would drop them.
      Give me some pointers what I misrepresent. Not only I have seen claims but I did read all warranties and I do know what they are and what they are not.
      Owners shouldn’t pay full price for 25 (or 50) year roof after 7 years.

    • @jeffreylogan5924
      @jeffreylogan5924 Před 5 lety +2

      Roofing Insights I understand we find ourselves in tough situations and feel the big companies should have a heart and make exceptions for special cases like the disabled elderly but they don’t. Props to you for for doing their roof pro bono. Unfortunately I can’t comment on that because I don’t know the brand, the product, the warranty coverage at the time of installation or the nature of the claim or what may have caused the shingle to failed. I assume that experience has sculpted your opinion of warranties or the manufacturer itself.
      In your reply you mentioned 25 or 50 year shingles... I have never known such thing. As a roofer the conversations with client will shape their expectations. To tell a customer that a shingle is a 25yr or 50yr shingle is miss leading and will lead to dissatisfied customers in the long run. I know of a traditional (3 Tab) shingle and a laminated (Oakridge or timberline) shingle, performance (duration or Dynasty) shingles and so on. Each shingles should not be sold or presented by the length of the warranty especially the limited or extended warranties.
      As warranties go, they are not a stipulation of the life span of the shingle and as manufacturers clearly specify in their warranties since they’ve been burnt from the wave of class action lawsuits over the past decades but rather a calculation of how much risk a company is willing to place. The reason 3 tab shingles only have a 5 year full and 25 yr prorated is not because it’s their lifespan but because when installed there’s only one layer of shingle between the deck and the environment between the key holes. The reason laminates have longer coverages is that there is alway 2-3 layers of shingle between the deck and the environment. If I lost you on that let me know in your reply and I’ll send you a visual. Now, why OC drops their full coverage from 10yr to 5 yr for all building other than single detached family homes like condos churches and so on is a mystery to me. If they don’t believe in their product enough to offer the same coverage regardless of the structure type than I won’t sell it. (You should have mentioned that in your video). While I have my opinions on GAF, at least they stepped up and changed their warranty this year so their full coverage warranty is now 10yr on any building type rather than just on single family detached homes. IKO and CRC has always been 15 yrs full with laminated regardless of building type. BP stepped up and matched in 2013. While I’m not fond of BP it still builds confidence in a product.
      During the video you seemed bothered that roofer were defending Dynasty, (9:10 of your video) and thus proceeded to what can only be described as a misleading smear campaign. This portrayed you as bias and threatened by the Dynasty product. The IKO warranty booklet was displayed and Dynasty was highlighted on the limited warranty information table. You mislead your viewers to believe that IKO warranty is garbage by falsely talking about the maximum liability/ dollar limit per sq. In your reply you said you did read all the warranties ... the limited warranty applies to the lifetime limited warranty portion of the warranty, not the full coverage. Should shingle failure caused by manufacturing occur during the initial 15yr periods the client would get 100% labor and 100% material. Not a maximum of 40$ per sq as you made your viewers believe. You then used the example in the booklet which applies to traditional shingles such are the marathon Plus but lead people to believe it was an example of the dynasty warranty coverage. The maximum liability / dollars per sq applies when a homeowner request a monetary settlement due to his roof being done before the completion of the claim. So long as he used IKO to replace the roof he will receive a maximum of 40$ per sq rather than a bundle amount towards his next roof. I don’t need to tell you that only material are covered after the full protection has expired. (15yrs for IKO and 10yrs or 5yrs for OC)
      So again, take down your video and start again because while we do need a warranty talk we don’t need it to be bias and dishonest.

      @@jeffreylogan5924 I talked to a rep. He told me some come from Canada and some from the States. I think he said Indiana but cant remember. The Bad ones came from the states.
      I had a bunch of roofs where I had to send back a quarter to a third of the shingles because they were so bad. The lamination seam on some was less that 1/8" wide or about 3 mm. I could not even get the shaft of the nail into it because it was thinner than the nail.
      It cost them a lot because I switched about 30 contractors to different brands. Just had to take a few shingles around and show them to the contractor.
      In addition the seal down strip does not seal down. You have to high wind nail them. I do that anyway but had to extra careful that the nails were perfectly in the nail line. If one nail was out you run the risk of the shingle coming loose.
      Not to mention they have one of the shortest life spans here. The shingles fall apart faster than any others that I have seen here.
