Sample size for this experiment is smaller than needed for science, but still much more than we bargained for. Keep it up!
Also, unfortunately, she didn't standardize her activity during each day. But an interesting video regardless!
The video was meant to be entertaining not a scientific experiment (It was more of a demonstration if anything)and she said it in the video.
Also that she would needed a week or 2 for these to actually take full effect.
Suggestion: not just her, but everyone involved in the channel (production, front-end, etc), all doing their normal weekly routine, each water lasting 1 week each round, where one round is them drinking certain quantities of water: just when they're thirsty; or however much they want, just at specific times of day; or drinking a total of 8 cups daily. Maybe get even more people involved, for a better sample.
Note: this is probably not at all practical, and definitely not worth a fraction of the effort, but if you *really* wanted an idealish experiment, this might be the way to go.
Judging by some of the comments here and the recent "US laughs at UK after finding out their heatwave is only 88 Fahrenheit".
You guys need to do a video on thermal comfort.
Our heatwave is awful cus of the humidity and no respite from it with our heat trapping homes :((
Yeah cuz down here in Brazil in the summer 27° its a cold day lol
I’m in Saskatchewan Canada and we had one or two weeks where it only got below 30 C at night
@@jacobarcher1097:
Heat trapping is the same as cool trapping. The only difference is when you trap the temperature in question.
Open your windows at night and turn on a fan, or as many as you have.
Once the outside is no longer cooling the inside, close all windows and blinds.
It's not perfect, but it should hold you over.
My way of thinking about it is this:
Y'know how you have to gradually adjust an indoor plant to the outside or else it gets shocked by the sudden change? It's kind of like that. Your body is used to dealing with certain temperatures or environments so when you encounter weather you're not used to it's kind of bad. But I will always prefer sleeping in a cold room over a hot room because I dont wanna sweat in my sleep and i cant go without a blanket.
Edit: also dont let anyone in texas or California make fun of you cuz we cant survive without air conditioning. I would not want to live in central america where they get tons of humidity in 110 degree weather.
The syringe is for back-washing/cleaning the water filter, not filling the container
I know. I had a mini stroke watching her contaminate her cleaning syringe.
Yeah, you just submerge the bag into the water to fill it. Also, the Sawyer filter will screw straight onto a lot of water/sports/fizzy drink bottles so you don't have to just use the bag it comes with.
For me, being thirsty but to lazy to get anything to drink, this video is definitely a form of torture.
Keep a big bottle of water by your side, that way you don't need to actually get up and get it.
Any time you feel lazy, think about how by being dehydrated you risk getting kidney stones, which are for some the most painful experience of their entire life. One woman said she would rather give birth to 10 children in a row then have another kidney stone. Better be hydrated then feel that in my opinion.

“Water is as simple as life can get, drinking it when you are thirsty and drinking any kind of water as long as it’s safe “-A human with some common sense,The last hope and voice of humanity.
Drinking only electrolytes won’t be good for you, but drinking electrolytes sometimes, especially when you sweat a lot or when you have physical activities can help to be less thirsty.
the most helpful tip for this i've seen is that whatever volume of electrolyte water (or gatorade etc) you drink, you should be equalling with normal water as well. that ratio will help with hydration after exerting yourself.
Y'all would love the movie Idiocracy
It's not actually unhealthy to drink electrolyte water all day, just a bit of a waste, because your body will simply excrete the surplus. So unless you care about the electrolyte levels in your urine for some bizarre reason, there's no added value in drinking electrolyte water constantly.
@@rjfaber1991We do care about the concentration of dissolved salts in our urine. When a solution becomes oversaturated the solvent will precipitate out, which in the case of salt means crystals form/grow.
We have a name for when this happens inside the kidneys, we call the crystal a "Kidney Stone", you may have heard of them.
Additionally, electrolyte imbalances can be very dangerous, but you have to be doing something weird to get there. (Either long term bad habits, or a short burst of something extreme, or drink sea water.)

@@riversheppherd121 yes I did, thank you for your concern. I’ve never really been funny though. Have a good day
I filter mine before I drink it. Partly because I don't trust its safety, partly because I also use it for tea and wanna avoid kettle scaling. But thankfully, the tap water is pretty decent where I live anyway - no weird color or unusual smells. I've seen much worse.
I could. But boil it first and wait it to cool down
ay thats me!
It’s so funny how horrible the day of sparkling water was for you. I’m German and almost everyone I know only drinks sparkling water all day. I think I’d have a hard time drinking only tab water. 😂
I like (filtered) tap water, but mineral/carbonated water feels more refreshing for some reason.
@@madotsuki_mk1 carbonated water is actually more hydrating from the study that I saw, but it conflicts with her study.
I certainly feel like it’s hydrating me more. I lived in Canada for half a year where I had to drink mostly tab water and I drank like twice the amount I normally would. But this may also be more due to the fact that I’m used to sparkling water just as she is to tab water.

Sabrina putting Melissa on F tier legit made me LOL
The problem with the "drink when you're thirsty, don't drink when you're not" is I have very shitty interoception so my body doesn't tell me that I'm thirsty until I'm completely dehydrated and feel like I'm gonna pass out.
more accurately, you don't listen to your body when it tells you, you're thirsty
I used to have this problem as well. Never drank enough an got dizzy and nosebleeds because of it all the time. I installed one of these drink reminder apps and that's really helping. You can set everything to your specific needs, so it tells you a more or less exact amount of fluid you need to drink that day, based on your height, weight, how active you are, how warm it is that day. I use "Waterful", it's free on iOS and Android and really helps.

As someone who got kidney stones because I did not drink enough water through a period of a few days (barely the amount of one mug per day), as I had not felt thirsty to drink more, I cannot recommend to follow this advice.
Drinking is important, whether water, tea, coffee, etc, as it makes your kidneys function and brings you minerals and stuff, and over everything, eliminate toxins and stuff your body doesn't need.
Drink, even when you do not feel thirsty, especially if you feel tired early in the day, or have dry/tired eyes. Do not worry about the amount, if you do not exercise much; rather about the frequency.
I would not hope anyone to have kidney stones, not even my worst enemies.
I love how quickly this went from "how hydrating is water" to "how good does it taste?"
I'm more disturbed by the implication that you don't drink anything in the morning!
A morning isn't a morning without a full glass of water.

@@annyone3293 cold water is more hydrating
@@josephwilliams1459 there's actually a perception bery common in Europe and other places that cold water causes stomach pain. I for one only feel hydrated if the water is ice cold, but some folks, especially those who don't often drink it, do get stomach pain from it. Additionally, I live in a hot area, so the coldness of the water is very import for me as it keeps my core temperature low and staves off heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
@@LathosZan
All true, in China there is also a cultural notion that hot water is good while cold water can make you ill (which party due to fear from contamination which got amplified a long while ago when there was rumors of the US intentional contaminating water as a war tactic)
But I was referring to data showing that cold water actually hydrates you better for the same amount of lukewarm or hot water.
But yeah, that coldness is the best temp regulator, just like hot tea and soup on a winter day. Sooo refreshing

Carbonated water tastes weird...
Then with the bubbles I personally just struggle with bubbles lol. I like to infrequently skull water in large quantities at a time, which would give me hiccups if there's bubbles and just be physically very hard to do (for me). Even when just sipping it's not pleasant for me to drink bubbles, including soft drink/soda/pop.

1:57 how is mineral water not an option? just plain straight from the ground regular degular mineral water (is that not a common thing in north america?)
We don’t really drink mineral water in America, I’m sure it’s there though. We drink a lot of bottled because it’s convenient and you can’t really trust the water in some areas. I’m pretty sure Tom Scott did a video on something similar to this if you’d like to learn more. Anyways best regards
Tom Scott's video has "Dasani" in the title in case you wanna find it easier. In short, it was about how it failed in the UK because of cultural differences and poor marketing strategy.
@@josh1253 mineral water is bottled too duh, it's basically the only kind of water sold at supermarkets here (portugal, europe)
that's why i thought it was weird
All water is mineral water unless it's specifically distilled water which should be just pure H2O
@@corky09734 That's not true. Mineral water generally has to be ground or spring water. Also, it has to be bottled right on site. Tap water can either be ground or spring water (i.e., basically the same as mineral water) - or it can a mix of ground or spring water and surface water that has been filtered by other means. It really depends on your region and what kind of water reserves are available. Also, the quality may differ depending on the local water grid. There are a lot of places where tap water is just as safe to drink as mineral water, but there are others where you really shouldn't use tap water for food preparation unless it has been properly boiled. Also, in some places tap water is chlorinated, which will of course change its taste.
Thank you answer in progress for answering the true questions in life😀
I feel like the best water is the one you will actually drink (and ofc that's safe to drink). Most people don't get enough water, so whatever type or kind you prefer and will actually drink throughout the day...drink that.
my favorite is bubble water. When I lived in Czech it was all they would drink. Now that I got a soda stream it's all I drink too
It's pretty cool how our body has natural notifications for when we need certain things. Bodily requirements like sleeping, eating, and drinking all have cues that we can act on. Basically being thirsty is kinda cool
I wish my body's notifications worked. I have trouble getting a proper amount of sleep because I rarely feel tired until I crash and I'm rarely thirsty. I suffer from chronic dehydration. It's difficult for me to be sure I drink enough because after a small amount water makes me feel nauseous, whether it's filtered or cleaned or whatever (it's not dirty water). I occasionally pass out, get nose bleeds, have eye pain, and have chronic dry cerumen problems. I wish just drinking when I was thirsty was enough.
The stream water is probably a very similar source to what you have in your tap unless you live in a particularly mountainous area with multiple drainage divides that feed more than 1 drinking water source.
Where I live we have 4 different primary water sources that are in their own drainage divides, which means that water tastes vastly different between areas of the city, having grown up 1with one source, and moved to an area with a water source I don't particularly like, and the streams just a 30 min walk from where I live (after a lot of hills) being for another source and of water I like, so I can luckily pick up the water I do like fresh from nature.
The trick when it comes to stream water, as long as you're mildly familiar with the area, such as industrialization, you primarily want to find water that is running at a decent, visible rate. Your biggest enemy is insect larvae and eggs, which don't like running water, they want it to be still, like near the banks of a not very steep decline. If the water is running at a decent speed (visibly across the full width), you might not even need a filter.
A rocky bottom to the river is even more helpful, as the rough rocky bottom helps to trap particulates and other debtis in the water as a sort of natural filter, and in some regions these rocks also add good minerals or otherwise further purify the water even more!
''Drink when you're thirsty, don't drink when you're not thirsty.''
This is the way
I'm rarely thirsty.
Seeing that Flushed Away scene unlocked some deep dark dusty part of my mind
I love that you guys get legitimate educators on to discuss their areas of expertise!
I do a lot of hiking/backpacking (well, compared to my peers) and I had a moment with the water filter segment:
1.) The syringe-thing is actually to clean the filter, so you might want to decontaminate that before using it for it's intended purpose (or before giving it to someone else, if that's what you decided to do with it).
2.) The bag isn't entirely necessary to the filtering, it's just what they provide. I use it because it rolls up nice and saves space, but you can screw the filter over pretty much anything
3.) You don't have to squeeze the water out of the bag to filter it. One of my favorite things about that kind of filter is that it can actually be used like a straw, and you're still getting the nice, filtered water.
I should note that I'm no expert (I'm barely a legal adult XD), I've just had experience with this in particular and I enjoy sharing info that makes things easier or safer for people, especially if that means there's a chance that they'll get a better experience in something they didn't think they would enjoy.

I'm currently pre-hydrating for a medical procedure!
As long as you don't drink too much heavy water.
Just wait until you learn about super heavy water
There is an Asterix on "they all do the same thing" because both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics which cause the body to lose water through urination. Electrolytes also cause the cells to absorb more water, which usually causes the cells to function better but results in less water in the bloodstream. So while you are still absorbing them the same amount it is very important to remember that they are not necessarily staying in the body for the same amount of time
melissa is GORGEOUS
6:05 gold. absolute gold
I was scared for Melissa's life when she drank water from the river, I could never do that. I'd be terrified of tapeworms
Water filters (like the Sawyer Squeeze used in the video) remove dirt, contaminants, bacteria, and protozoa, so definitely no tapeworms. They can't filter out viruses because viruses are too small, so in areas where that is a risk you need chemical or UV purification too.
And you just dunk the whole bag in the water source to fill it. The syringe Melissa used is for back-flushing with clean water every now and then to push all the captured dirt back out the bottom. Or you can run the filter under a tap when you get back to civilisation, holding the drinking end up the the tap and letting the clean water flow backwards through the filter. Melissa's syringe has unfiltered water in it now, so it needs to be cleaned out before being used.
I know you might not be interested in that, but if anyone else is scrolling through, now they'll see the safety info.

Loved the Flushed Away reference.
I love those voss bottles.
I normally like videos on the channel but I hated this one...
The method is highly unscientific and I don't see a point in torturing someone like this... How she feels has no bearing on how body is managing the water balance. Dehydration symptoms are quite late so unless you test blood electrolytes (before and after), you can't really judge the effect of the water.
I'm a doctor btw and I agree with the expert though I would like to add some nuances...
1. In a normal individual when there is no dehydration or salt and water imbalance, you can hydrate the person with pretty much anything. Body is quite resilient to maintain its homeostasis.
2. However, if the person is dehydrated and there is salt depletion - excessive exercise, diarrhoea, heat stroke (doesn't happen at 27°C), you would prefer ORS (oral rehydration solution by WHO) as the Sodium and glucose secondary active transport in intestines drags water with it through osmosis.
All of their videos are either unscientific or just them first learning about a topic lol and she literally said in the video that it is unscientific she wasn't trying to hide that. The expert in the video agreed with the first one and literally everyone knows the second one. (also you can hate it if you want all I'm saying is that you'd most likely be a hypocrite if you didn't hate the others that implied the same techniques)
Bro...you guys need to run these tests for longer. One day/one glass of water isn't it.
love this!
As a German, sparkling water is absolutely amazing and refreshing when you're thirsty.
I think you're probably being dramatic over the carbon making your stomach hurt, and blaming it on that. It usually just makes you burp, that's all.
So. That expert was…. Not very insightful. I’m not an expert but I can tell you a few things that can be derived from what she was saying. H2O is important for your body to stay ALIVE but not ANY water addresses thirst. Thirst itself happens for a variety of reasons, only one being not consuming enough water. One of those is dry mouth which drinks with high tannins (juice, tea, coffee; make your mouth feel dry afterwards) can lead to thirst. Additionally some of those drinks also are diuretics(including carbonated drinks), which means they either irritate or stimulate your body to pee more. Which can offset that balance between water and salt she referenced, making you thirsty. So even though you consumed it, it goes out much quicker as well. This is also why if you suddenly start drinking water more than normal you might feel like you’re peeing ‘all the time’ because you’re throwing off that balance, so your body makes you pee. Additionally, with things like sweating you’re losing salt, so, hydrating with a bunch of tap water is not in balance. That’s why a lot of sports drinks are salty and have electrolytes. So it kind of does matter what and when you drink as to how well it will make you not thirsty.
It was 11 degrees this morning. It should have been around 21. Global climate destabilization is real.
I like to use a bit of flavors to make the water tasty. Also, making iced tea from tea bags/leaves might be time intensive but could be another useful way of getting yummy hydration.
I’m so happy Flushed Away isn’t only in my reality/nostalgia
