This is one the most beautiful movies I have ever seen-I feel tremendous peace everytime I watch it. Philip Glass is truly Spectacular, a sheer Musical Master Piece, and gifted Artist.

Unforgettable ending. The teachings of impermanence represented so well by the mandala sequence were an interesting abstraction when I first watched this movie, and are now very much reality in my life. If more people accepted that this is how things are instead of fighting it, they would suffer less.

The absolute detail and historical accuracy of this movie is amazing. The film makers and martin really did their research to make this scene good. They did a great job portraying the Dalai Lama's escape to India as is actually was. I'm glad they showed the Dalai Lama as he actually was during the crossing scene, as sick as a dog. ( He had gotten very ill two nights before ) Thank you martin for not hollywoodizing this scene.

It's certainly one of the most beautiful ending that I have ever seen in a film. No need to be a buddist to appreciate this film. It's one of the most underrated film and one of the most beautiful films ever made. The story of young Dalaï Lama is also a metaphore of the human condition. I used to watch it with my mum. She loved it so much. Miss her so much.

    Are you the Lord Buddha?
    Dalai Lama:
I believe I am a reflection, like the moon on water. When you see me, and I try to be a good man, you see yourself.

The soundtrack of this movie stands alone. Incredible music. The visuals are amazing. Seeing this in the theater was phenomenal. (I saw it 3 times). The words he says in this clip were read at my wedding. Our officiant said it was very powerful. I cry when I see the guard walking foot over foot down the rock pier. Its as if he is trying to protect His Holiness to the very last moment he can. This movie puts things into perspective for me. If I am having a bad day at work because I missed a couple things on some spreadsheet, I watch this movie. Seeing him give up his country and all that he loves and walk across the mountains to India so he can be a candle of hope for his people... my spreadsheet issue suddenly becomes a pebble.

The Dalai Lama said the Oracle's predictions were often convoluted, but sometimes they could be as clear as day, such as in this instance, where he said, "Go now!"

Ah, yes. The cinematic, contemplative masterpiece effectively silenced and invisible to the world thanks to....China. Other than bootleg, pretty much the only way to see this film is on disc. Everything else ever made seems to be available online/streaming....but this? Good luck. Brilliant, beautiful, and so full of teaching.

10:50-13:03 is the most powerful scene in the movie, the dialogue accompanied by Martin Scorsese’s direction, the cinematography and Philip Glass’s score adds to the scene.

"The movie Kundun was on [television] about the Dalai Lama. I was getting ready to leave...and it was the end of the movie. And the Dalai Lama is about to cross over the border, to you know, be in exile for the rest of his life from his own country. And he looks back at the men who helped him, and you know he's escaped the Chinese government. And he looks back at them and he waves and they wave at him. And then they show a scene where he looks back at them again and he sees every one of them dead. Because he knew they would be killed, and they knew that in helping him they would be killed. And you know the emotion in this next song, that's all that's about. It's not like an intelligent song. It doesn't have the answer to anything. And it's not necessarily pro or con about China. It's just that right now China symbolizes one of the strongest, yet most oppressive countries and governments in the world. And we [Americans] are fortunate to live in a free country. And so in thinking about that it just kinda upset me, and we wrote this little song called "Chinese Democracy."

the only problem I have with this scene is that at the start he said "They are expecting us in India" and the solider at the border straight up "who are you sir" ? um huh?

I think they knew they were coming. But it is the individual soldier asking. If he is the Lord Buddha.returned to India he ask who are you he want to here him say so." All the.fuss for a simple monk". I think the answer to his the question was just as satisfying

The Dahli Lama refused to go to India until the government of India gave permission for him to immigrate . So, they (the powers that be) were expecting him.
That does not mean every border guard knew he was coming the their pass.
I know there has to be only a few passes through the Himalayas, the specific route they took was determined by evading the Chinese soliders.

Sometimes I revolt against the overly lyrical, idealized presentations of the life and importance of his holiness. I also recognize though that we live in times where there is so much constantly before us, times filled with a plenitude of matters seeking our attention. As a convinced communist I feel that the dreams of the Tibetan people are as valid and helpful for the common good as the dreams of the dreams of China. If there are oppressors among the Tibetans, there are also oppressors among the Chinese as can plainly be seen. Let the Tibetans dream and fulfill their destinies. Let one hundred flowers bloom. Who can argue against the wisdom of the Ocean of Wisdom?
