Thank you! It is precisely what I was looking for! It was how I thought you should read the grade stick, but everyone else did something different. They weren't making sense to me how they moved the stick up and down, guessed the plus or minus, never used the stick zero on the spot/ ground, then moved the receiver up or down to get the correct reading. For finding grades, or level, again thanks!

How do you know the grade rod is plumb on both axis?

You tilt the rod back and forth until you find where the laser hits at it lowest point on the rod.

Carpenter's use these sticks. Useless for excavation since survey's use tenths. Plus its easier to get a stick where numbers are on the back side. U put receiver at top of stick and u pull it up or down to get tone, then u know if u high or low . Up is down, to deep. Down is up, to high. Setting the reciever at say 4,10 then digging a hole, you'd have to stand on a ladder to get tone. And that doesn't tell u if u level or not

I think the smaller red numbers are a hold over from optical instruments. The field of view was too small. In the middle of a foot, you couldn't see either large red number. The rods haven't changed with the coming of lasers.

My grade rod has both. as i always say, you're not building a piano. A sixteenth is good enough.

USA should go Metric to avoid all this Imperial confusion 😟
