  • Tour of my small studio apartment here in Astoria, Queens, NY. I'm not sure of the exact SQ FT, but my friends and I believe it's around 220-240ish SQ FT. Moved in here almost a month ago, and 3 blocks away from N,W Line Subway Station (Ditmars Blvd Stop). I hope you enjoy the tour!

    that's an amazing deal for a studio, especially in your location! don't have to deal with roommates and end up getting about the same amount of space since you don't have to share a kitchen and bathroom.

    Thank you for posting this. I moved to Astoria in 2020 to a studio, size max 220-240 square ft off of Steinway. Half a block from the R/M train. I love your gratitude and minimalistic approach. You helped me a lot. I took a smaller apartment due to being disabled. Seeing this helped me stay in gratitude bc of how love your space. Maybe I will run into you at Mokja Korean or District Saigon. I love spicy Asian. I’m Vietnamese.

    You've done a great job downsizing. I wanted to tell you about a bunk bed we used to have. The top is a twin, but the bottom was a full size that turned into a couch during the day. This would allow you privacy during the day to do what you want - read, write, hang out - on top, and relax on the couch or have guest sitting during the day.
    Good luck!

    I love that you are going to put one-way film in your window. So necessary! I think it would be really hard to live there and never be able to use or look out the window. I wonder why you got such a big bed? I realize murphy beds are expensive, but there are other solutions. Just saying you could get a huge armoire or cabinet or something and use a yo with some nice padding underneath and have a lot more room to work with or move around in by making that one change. You could even get a nice padded storage bench and use that for seating and store all your bedding in there and it could maybe fit into a storage ottoman and your seating could be nicer. I don't know if you are up for it, but you could always build a storage bench to fit your place and have a couchish kind of thing that holds everything. You can even easily include dividers inside if that helps you use the storage better. You could also fit in trays inside that help you utilize the vertical space inside. They can hang or rest on the dividers. If you make it yourself you can make the seating as deep or shallow and as big or small as you like and you can customize the upholstery as well. I think that could be an awesome second project for your place after figuring out a different bedding situation. And it is just an idea. You seem to be managing fine, but you might be able to utilize the space better.

    • @jungletonman
      @jungletonman  Před 2 lety +5

      Thank you for watching! Most NYC apartments are already on the small side. To find a really small place like mine is going to be a bit difficult tho, and if you do find it, odds are, prices are not going to be cheap. My best advice is regardless of the size of the apartment, look for the best bang/value for your money. If you find a decent size apartment in a good neighborhood at a reasonably price, highly consider it. If you find a very small apartment at a cheap price, consider it as well. Go for value is my advice, not necessarily the size of the apartment.

    You know, you could replace that yellow coffee table with one of Ikea's small, white pedestal tables (it would fit) and you could get rid of those two plastic cabinets in favor of an Ikea corner storage unit (take your pick as they have so many). I love the artwork, but I'd also add some small curtains for the kitchen (maybe black to offset all of the white). And you need some plants (real or fake) to jazz the space up. But it looks adorable. I'd also consider a sleeper sofa. But if that's not your jam, then that's not your jam. Very nice.

      @@live688 I thought the Friheten Ikea bed was known for being uncomfortable but it certainly was clean, modern and a good size with storage. I like that this tour was not overly stlized. Just very normal -not really even co ordinated. So it could be done by anyone on any budget - mismash. It's not like he even went to Ikea and coordinated everything. I do wonder in these small spaces other than for intimate relationships if they could survive on a single bed or maybe get Friheten sectional/couch for when you have visitors and need a double/queen?

    I love the private entryway, but I would have to cover the little window for added security. Also, I would add a security camera or ring camera. As a woman, I would elevate the bed up higher to have more storage space underneath (extra towels, hats, toiletries, sheets) and cover that with a long bedskirt. Definitely would organize the closet with hanging shelves to store tees, socks, undies, etc (you can get this from Ikea). You could take that particle board and fashion a radiator cover (maybe even color it or apply peel & stick design). Speaking of peel & stick... I would have changed the main wall by giving it a fo brick look or even like a more zen garden look (think accent wall). I know Target and Amazon have peel & stick wallpaper. And maybe swap out the plastic 3 tier chests for 1 rolling utility cart or something to that affect for remotes, laptops, etc. I have more thoughts.. but that's all I'll share for now! ✌🏽

My husband laughs when he tells others, that our two car garage out by the alley is bigger than our house. 😅 The whole property is 40 by 80 feet. We do have a full basement. The front and back enclosed porches make the house appear bigger from the outside. I do love our concrete patio out back, between the house and garage. Not used to living so close to neighbors, as I grew up in a big house, on 3.25 acres.

    Thanks for sharing your space! It looks like a nice and cozy suite, I really like the tile pattern in the kitchen, and decent counter space for the unit size. I'm just getting ready to move to a studio suite this weekend, but I think it might be closer to 300sq ft. I opted for a hide-a-bed sofa, so I have that and another sofa, for a more social layout. Game nights are a favorite hobby of mine, so having ample seating and a good sized coffee table was a must for me, so I didn't pick a full sized bed to bring into my small space. I love all the storage tips you showed, especially your backpack and hat collection, very organized!

    This is a very nice little apartment, and an excellent deal, especially so close to the train. Your bathroom is the same size as those in many much bigger apartments, and the beautiful, colorful shower curtain creates such a nice visual touch. You actually have extra kitchen cabinet space, up high, that you're not even using! The only thing I'd add if I lived there would be a small folding stepladder (maybe hang it on the bathroom door?) to make those upper cabinet shelves more accessible. Great job making a nice home for yourself, and I hope you're enjoying it!

    It’s amazing how most New York apartments don’t have a Washing Machine- unless you pay over $4000 a month for rent

    Studio apt in Washington DC is $2,000-$3,000. $1,200 all in sound good.

    Who pays for water/sewage and do you have to leave the building to do laundry?

      Yes i leave the building to do laundry, a block away. Water and heat are paid by the landlord.
