Note: Dmj also has a 1.2 with das, so he was still no slouch
??? Why didn't I hear about this yet???
@@davidjennings2300 wait I thought you were, is it only a high 1.1 lol
@@ryanamburgy2791 ya, 1.2 into 29 is godly
kinda messed up that he was playing with das to "make it more fair", but then starts rolling when he's about to lose. kinda eliminates the point.
@@Jack_80 Yeah, understandable. Maybe I'll ask my opponent before the match if they are okay with me doing that
Yo that's me!! XD
About a month prior to this video, I actually did not realize that my win was considered the biggest upset in CTWC competition history. It shocks me to know it is, let alone it being in the top 10 all-time upsets.
Also, WOW that was a nailbiter! Great job with this video and your performance at the qualifier aGameScout! :D
Hello Tetris upset GOAT!
9:01 "It seems that you are a worthy opponent. Very well, I shall use my full power!"
Would have been funnier if game of scouts accused dmj of cheating once he switched to (t)rolling technique 😅😅
"I admit it, you are better than I am"
"Then why are you smiling?"
"Because I know something you don't know. I am not left handed"
@@gabemoothart7943”I am not *DAS* handed” ftfy
@@How_Many_Monkeysnah you actually made the joke worse
It's been nice to see your growth in Tetris over the years in your videos and it's insane how much you have improved.
nice pfp
@@RichConnerGMN Thanks.
DMJ intentionally played with DAS to make it a close match so he would get featured in a Scout video.
Shhhhhhhhhh
Growing up with dmj it’s crazy watching him grow in his Tetris success and becoming one of the best in the world! Super proud of this man.
Brenden, my man, thank you for the kind words!
That fake thumbnail at 11:11 is actually goated
9:04 I love the look on your face😂 it’s like, “okay party’s over”
A minor correction:
In modern Tetris, ex tetrio / jstris , or ppt 1 or 2 (many other games as well) you are not guaranteed to get a piece after 7 peices, there is a bag system where all 7 pieces are in that bag, and you randomly take pieces out until the next bag (this is the most simple way to explain or imagine this), so while yes you do get and I piece every 7 lines (on average), you can get it anywhere from no no drought in pieces to a 12 piece drought.
But that is cheating (altering the game mechanics). It should be random. Possible with the same seed for both players but still random
Fantastic fantastic playing dude! I really hope that we get to do another match against one another, would be really fun!
The diagrams where you show the hypothetical options for where to drop something, I've honestly never seen anything so helpful and informative in any other Tetris video, I understood exactly what you were talking about
these guys are pretty decent at tetris
yes, i would say they are at an acceptable skill
I mean come on, the fact you pushed DMJ, who had been using DAS the entire time to switch to rolling?
That talks a lot about his confidence both in his own DAS, and his confidence in YOU to pull it off within 3 games. Either way, if I were in your shoes, heck yeah I would be proud to have even done that.
So true! After seeing his game 3 score, my God if I didn't switch to rolling he would have smoked me! What a different video this would have been
NICEEE!!!
Above and beyond performances like these against people above your level is always a joy. Congrats for the double tournament PBs!
Wow your Tetris skills have just gotten so much better over the last couple years, you should be really proud!
Also, no one can make a Tetris match sound more exciting than Scout lol
love seeing in-person competition content, warms my heart seeing how wonderful this community is ❤️❤️❤️ also WOW you popped off scout GGs
Classic Tetris is implementing ELO system now? That's pretty cool
Yeah, it’s an amazing project. It’s actually been around for years, although not always widely publicized - I have a link to it in the video description!
So exciting. Keep up the tournament efforts and great video (as always).
Congrats on 3rd place! Been watching for 5 years @ this point (time flies!), You've really put in the work, you should be incredibly proud of your performance!
Congrats! Its been fun watching you grow.
7:36
Just some helpful advice, this pole vault is actually counter-intuitive when moving left since it unnecessarily shifts weight back to the right, making the S piece more likely to snag somewhere on the stack.
That aside, great games, and congrats on the competition PB! 😃
When you still have to make the thumbnail for the video that never happened
Very well done, fun to watch.
Congrats mate you have improved a lot! Also you have become a big reference in the Tetris community!
Congrats Scout! I love your narrative reviews of Tetris events.
Me too! Especially when you didn't attend, seeing footage of the room and players is awesome.
Awesome vid! Loved it.
Very cool! Good job!
Congratz man!
Great to see a vid from you again :D
I finally made it into a gamescout video! 0:20
Excellent video as well, ggs on some great comp scores!
This just proves how absolutely superior rolling is to DAS and even HT. Since the CTWC has already gone in and made fundamental changes to the game with the Super Killscreen, maybe it's time to buff DAS by upping its speed to closer match modern.
We’ve known rolling is superior to the other playstyles for about two years now - a non-roller hasn’t won the CTM masters event since January 2022. There has never been a serious push to buff DAS though because it would take away from what makes DAS special - playing within its current limitations. The rolling meta is currently the most accessible the top of the scene has been to the average person in a long time, as long as they are willing to put in the hours - not everyone can be a fast hypertapper, but nearly everyone can master rolling with enough practice.
Three of my most favorite people in the NES Tetris community...Scout, DMJ, and Barrett. The closing words really hit home...the competition is fun, but the community is what makes the event.
You're climbing the ranks, my dude!
Great video!
Congratulations Scout! It has been a long time coming, you surely would have deserved to win the match :D
Much respect for DMJ also for playing with DAS for a time, what a sportsman!
Great video as always 👌
Thanks bro! I though people might hate me for switching in the 3rd game, but I know Scout wanted to beat me with rolling so I though it was respectful to him and AtKoster
@@davidjennings2300 It made it exciting when you switched to Rolling.
@@wingfryer Thanks! I had to win 3 before Scout won 1, so it was exciting!
Otherwise known as handicap
The fact that you had to force DMJ to roll after he was trying to make it fair by playing DAS style is actually hilarious to me because had he stayed DAS, you would have beat him no doubt about it.
The fact that he had to switch to rolling... can't say I blame him. If I could roll I would probably do it too. Just not sure how I feel about it lol.
Yes! Scout absolutely bested me in the first 2 games. I thought the switch might be controversial when thinking about it afterwards, but I don't think AtKoster, who was waiting for the winner, would have felt as good about winning if I didn't use rolling when I was on the brink of elimination. Plus, I think Scout did want a shot to beat me when I'm rolling, so I had to have some respect for them. The real question is: was it disrespectful to even the playing field in the first place?
@@davidjennings2300 fair points

Much appreciated sir!
very well played!
I wish they would do a dos only bracket to make it fair for them so they could have a chance to win

Hey man, you r a proud and nice DAS player. GZ
haven't watched a tetris video for like a year. Damn I really miss watching tetris games
5 minutes in and this sounds like me in Vegas 2023. After finishing: Actually so cracked but the similarities between this and me in Vegas is oddly close. Qualifying the 800s, That there are 2 world championships players, 12 people in the bracket, Getting a good top 8 match, facing a top player much more skilled than us, winning the first game, and getting third. Very Monka S
GGs on third
DMJ was just mucking around when he used DAS.
It became obvious very quickly who the superior player was once he goes all-out.
I was actually trying my hardest in those first games, and Scout just outplayed me.
@@davidjennings2300 But only when you had one hand tied behind your back. The second you switched input style, it was over.
@@budgetcoinhunter it wasn't immediately over - there's always the risk of an early topout no matter the skill level, which nearly happened to dmj in game 4 if he hadn't saved himself with a heroic dig. And then I miraculously smashed my competition pb in game 5, so he needed to post an above average score in order to beat me. I emphasize at the end that it was a clutch performance from both of us.
@aGameScout Yup! This should be a classic example that losing doesn't always correlate with making a mistake. People play perfect and lose sometimes
I say even though you aren't "The best", your still easily in the top 100. And for a game as widely played as classic tetris, thats mad impressive.
I'm shocked that the video started with "This... Is me"
14:17 What if you put Z vertical in columns 4 and 5 and S vertical in columns in 6 and 7? That creates 3 rows of garbage but allows you to stack up a right well.
At 220 lines, I can only burn one line if I want to get all 3 of my final tetrises before 29. Looking back, the one other possible move might’ve been setting the Z horizontal on columns 8 9 and 10 and hoping that I could skim the one line of garbage up top.
@@aGameScout The ZS placement I suggested wouldn't burn any lines.
@@pineapplewhatever5906 Oh I see what you mean now, yeah that would also be theoretically possible (but super difficult with DAS) to build and get tetrises up 3 rows
I thought the upset was he beating the best of the best, Scout😂. I mean, he was so lucky to beat the GOAT
just curious, did you ever play against DAS-era titans (Harry, jeff, Jonas, Quaid) ?
I did play a match against Quaid once! I wasn’t nearly as good back then, but I did do a video breakdown of how it went czcams.com/video/Ajvn-Eg_2nw/video.html
now i want to know : hows your progress on practicing rolling?
Before getting the maxout, I thought I would be motivated to learn rolling once I’d achieved it - but afterwards, I quickly realized I just wanted to take a break and enjoy a while of feeling like I had “beaten” the game (as the maxout goal had been looming above me for so long). So I haven’t started the grind yet. The main thing that will motivate me to start soon is probably documenting the entire process of me learning it and seeing how long it takes me to get back up to getting a maxout with rolling
@@aGameScout I've always thought that would make a good series. If you want coaching or advice, I can always tell you what I know!
You practicing rolling? If so progress check?
Is that a Buc-ee's hat?
It is!
Ain't no way that Cchristm beating Mecex isn't the craziest upset ever
How's that phrase go? After every amazing game comes a bomb one? Ggs either way, tho (still kind of wonder how it would have gone if he had kept using DAS the whole time 🤔)
If Scout still put up that huge game 5 score, it's HIGHLY likely he would have won
@@davidjennings2300 assuming his game was the same, obv :p
@@TS_Mind_Swept Yeah, it's hard to say that because he might have played differently if I was using das.
@@davidjennings2300 Fair point, I s'pose (also I didn't realize you were the one playing against him SuperVinlin )
i would've titled the video "i forced a pro tetris player to max out." amazing performance!
🍻
No way I am actually in a Scoutvideo
This is some anime stuff. An underdog goes up against a pro and wins the first two rounds and then they stop holding back. The underdog then breaks his personal best! No real life plot armor to take home the win after that though. Probably won't rematch at the end of the manga or a training arc and win either.
Definitely a "You are worthy of my true power" moment
You should make a video of 'What happened to Joseph Saelee'?
There's not much to say, really. 2021 CTWC was his last event, after that he shifted his focus on college and working out, likely in part due to the increased effort it would take to master rolling and stay at the top of the scene.
btw in description wou spelled championship wrong
just a correction :D
Thanks for the catch, fixed!
@@aGameScoutok thanks :D
If you play smart, could you technically have an advantage by playing slower and seeing what peices you have next by looking at your opponents screen?
I need an NTSC NES.
tetris
11:22 J flat at 123 should be better
True, I didn’t see it in the moment
@@aGameScout It's hard to see that. I trained a lot on 19-3 with DAS so that might help me get the correct instinct instantly.
Great performance btw. GGs
Surely the biggest upset of all time is jonas vs megaretroman.
I assume it isn't listed because the elo ranking is too new? Or wasn't the elo difference between these two not as high as you would expect?
Jonas vs megaretroman is definitely the most iconic upset of all time - however their skill gap was a lot less than dmj and I (they were both das players, and mrm had 10 maxouts at the time, while I currently only have 1). iirc, Elo gave mrm about a 10% chance of winning that match. The match is mainly remembered for the games that Jonas fumbled on, but mrm was quite a good player in his own right.
@@aGameScout thanks for clearing that Up for me :)
In addition to what Scout wrote, Megaretroman was about 15% vs Jonas (1440 against 1820 in Elo).
Biggest upset in main CTWC draw is Asta vs PixelAndy in 2021 (just under 10%) when Andy was rated 2100.
Though TetrisTime being Fractal TWICE was given about a 3% chance by Elo.
You look like Trent Lenkarski.
To bad you can't measure almost.
What’s with the players wearing gloves and flicking there wrists
Is it just me or DMJ looks like Madeon
why does he have to re-explain the entirety of nes Tetris every video, like why, we already know that long bars is what's most efficient
Semi-frequently, my videos get shown on the CZcams algorithm to a bunch of people who’ve never seen Classic Tetris before, so I do it for them. I try to only explain the bare minimum and get through it as quickly as possible
Man I wish DAS was viable :(
RIP DAS
Well, since they're monkeying with the rules of the game already with Super Killscreen, why _not_ just go in and update the DAS piece movement speed?
Neubauer "rolling" in his grave😅😅😅
bro lowkey look like wumbo
Grats for placing 3rd in the tournament Scout, but IMO this video shouldn't have been made, at least not the way you made it. Yes, he went easy on you, just accept it. Is it possible that he taps out with rolling before you do? Yes. Is it probable? I would bet that the probability of this happening is lower than you beating him. And it is not just because rolling is objectively better, but also because he was playing outside of his comfort zone. Yes, he is still very competent at DAS, but if you play constantly with one technique and then switch to another one you ain't gonna be playing 100%, but more like 80-90% at most.
I acknowledge in the video that he was going easy on me for the first 2 games, but if that was the only factor that made the match close, I wouldn't have made the video. It was improbable that I'd break my competition pb twice in a single set, and it was improbable that he'd get out of the Game 4 dig and by no means a guarantee that he'd get a maxout in game 5 (in the following match, he got fairly average scores while rolling the whole time). What made the match special was that both of us managed to put in clutch performances in the end.
You are right, I was probably not at 100% with DAS, but to me it's pretty easy to pick up quickly since it's just a timing thing, so I wasn't too rusty. But I was definitely trying my hardest in those first games to win with DAS, I thought I could win and show I'm actually the better player when on a level playing field, but that obviously DID NOT happen.... lol
