  • Jeremy Clarkson checks out the new Bentley model, the Arnage, and gives it a proper testdrive and reviews the car. The Bentley Arnage is a full-size luxury car manufactured and marketed by Bentley Motors in Crewe, England, from 1998 to 2009. The Arnage and its Rolls-Royce-branded sibling, the Silver Seraph, were introduced in the spring of 1998. They were the first entirely new designs for the two marques since 1980.
    The Arnage was powered by a BMW M62 V8 engine, with Cosworth-engineered twin-turbo installation, and the Seraph employed a BMW M73 V12 engine. In September 2008, Bentley announced that production of the model would end during 2009.

    600 hp in the nineties was enormous. Never knew AM offered something like that so long ago. Even today 600 and up is supercar territory.

    I went for a ride in a 2001 Bentley Arnage LWBase, which was insane enough and then I found out how rare it was; it was a Mulliner Park Ward saloon “made to order”. At the time I worked in a school & the father of one of my students was a car collector (not surprising, he was the CFO of G.E in the States) That was one of my dream car experiences :) This is a wonderful upload, love all vintage Clarkson especially!

      Did you miss the start of the video?

    • @moogle68
      @moogle68 Před rokem

      I think they missed a key bit of context in that part of this segment. It starts with VW> buying Bentley for ~£400m, and BMW> buying Rolls Royce for ~£40m, and then Jeremy saying VW paid £400m and it's full of BMW switch gear. This doesn't make sense to us younger folks because Bentley and RR are separate companies, and they only said that BMW bought RR, so why would the Bentleys that VW had bought have BMW switch gear? I think it's because a while ago RR bought Bentley, so they were basically the same company, just aimed at slightly different buyers. So, when he says that BMW bought RR, that means they also got Bentley, meaning the Bentleys that VW paid so much for did indeed have many BMW-made internal switches. This connection wasn't made clear just based on the clips shown, and it's my best guess as to what Jeremy meant by what he said. If I got something wrong, or if Jeremy just misspoke or something, then feel free to let me know.

    Both Bentley and Rolls Royce very quickly reverted to the 6.75 litre engine because the market, particularly in the middle east, just wouldn't buy the little BMW lawnmower engines.

      not true VW stick again with old 6.75 becouse BMW doesn't deliver the 4.4 litre engine. VW at that time don't have any engine for it.

    • @BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne
      @BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne Před 6 měsíci

      These would be the BMW lawnmower engines that have proven to be bullet-proof? While the 6.75l Rolls engine suffers from:
      Headgasket failure
      Camshaft failure
      Gearbox failure
      Water-pump failure
      I have owned both 6.75 & 4.4 versions. I am currently looking into my third Arnage and it will 100% be a 4.4

      Cost, as now part of VW they could no longer use the BMW engine and there wasn't anything else available.
      Even so there were a lot of alterations required under the bonnet to get the old engine to fit.
      It also added 600 Lbs to the weight and they had a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets, now a £5,000 job !

    Clarkson initally explains BMW Buys ROLLS ROYCE 40M, and VW Buys BENTLEY FOR 470M
    But then he ridicules VW for buying ROLLS ROYCE for 470M that has BMW engine.
    Can someone explain please?

    • @petrolhead999
      @petrolhead999 Před rokem

      BMW did buy Rolls Royce for 40m
      VW did buy Bentley for 470m
      Then the BMW find out that the RR also own a Bentley, so the Bentley is also belong to the BMW, which means that the VW just paid 470m for nothing
      But after court clarifications VW get Bentley back to themself
      So now VW own bentley and BMW own RR
      But there was a period when BMW uses a Bentley factories and make some cars by bentley label
      And the car that Jeremy tested in this video is one of them

    How does one compare a 4 door luxurious car to a two door sports car. To me they are two totally different types cars. I personally don't care about the name of a car I care only what I get for my money. Now I just love the Green label 4.4ltr Arnage over the 6.75ltr model and couldn't care two hoots if one car can go thirty Mph faster than another when I can't even use it. I don't know about you but I am not allowed to brake the speed limit anymore. The police man told me that after he gave me a piece of paper which turned out to be an invoice for many hundreds of dollars. I was lucky, he took 10kph off or I would have been in big trouble. Jeremy Clarkson talks crap and I think he even knows it. But then that his why his show was so successful. He mostly entertains the dreamers. Good luck to him.
