  • A walking tour of the R/P FLoating Instrument Platform (that is the R/P FLIP). More info on FLIP can be found here: en.wikipedia.o...
    We were on the platform during July of 2016 for a pilot program, studying the dynamics of the upper ocean.

    as it's said that the main purpose of FLIP is to have a movable platform which is rock stable even under heavy water conditions, only moving up & down a few centimeters when there are waves of 10 meters and above, i'd really love to see some video footage of those conditions it was made for. Wishing that since years, but, funny thing is till now i was not able to find any of that. Maybe, one day, finally that wish comes true.

So I persume the bridge is orientated purely "traditional deck"-parallel (while unflipped) ? In thet context, we need pictures of the bridge in flipped mode, what timespan into the video do i have to look for the captains workplace?

    • @gregh9762

      Niklas Bennewitz If you really, really curious, you would do a little search to know that FLIP doesn't have propulsion system. Meaning it has to be towed by other ship to designated location, thus it doesn't have/need a helm if that's what you were asking. Better yet, I'm gonna tell you that FLIP was built in the 60s. Amazing what little research, or rather watching related video on the right can do eh?

    Awesome video thanks for posting. All the science kids grew up hearing about Flip when we were in gradeschool science classes in SoCal in the late 60s and early 70s. We never got to board or even see a movie about what was inside, now I hear she was scrapped. I think most of us assumed the interior was all chrome and blinkenlights. Looks like she lived a long hard life and you gotta love the lack of handholds on some pretty steep companionways probably because the vessel rotates through 90 degrees.. Were the grey doors at the vertical water line, or is that last compartment beyond the grey doors the final one above the water?

    This research vessel is typically towed out to sea where it then "flips" and starts it's work. So, it does this because it would be difficult to move a (however many) foot deep object continuously through the water whenever they need to move it.
    They must need to move it fairly often to justify the cost for the design.
    The "towing" part confuses me a little though, isn't the boat capable of manuvering like a regular ship when in the horizontal position?
    Definitely unique.

    • @James-vn8zb
      @James-vn8zb Před 2 lety +2

      No. It doesn't have any sort of propulsion or steering system, so that's why it's towed to whatever location they plan on doing their research.

    So amazing! :D I guess I expected more usability in both orientations and more ingeinous fixed steps/stairs and more swiveling things, but I get that the primary position was vertical, the horizontal one was just for transport, so only the beds, sink and toilet(?) were adapted for use while in the horizontal position. But I really don't understand how you were supposed to get to the horizontal sink/toilet when the ship was horizontal. A mobile ladder? But you'd have to go through the galley, essentially stepping on the counters.
    Anyway, it's a shame this marvelous piece of engineering was scrapped. :(
