On the track: GALBENEI GORGES CIRCUIT TRAIL, `LIVE FIRE` (FOCUL VIU) GLACIER CAVE - Episode 3 - Apuseni Natural Park, Romania
This is the 3rd episode in a series of 4, about Apuseni Natural Park, Romania.
I was camping in a special place in Padis area (Episode 1 - • CU CORTUL IN PADIS. Or... ) and almost every day I went on a trail in Apuseni Natural Park, Romania. Since we have already visited Cetatile Ponorului and Ponor Meadow the previous day (Episode 2: • FURTUNA LA MUNTE & tra... ), I had to go in Galbenei Circuit Track aswell.
This I one of the most beautiful trails in Apuseni Mountains, Romania. The main points of interest are: Padis Cabin - Ponor Karst Spring - Ponor Meadow - Cetatile Ponorului - Galbenei Karst Spring - Galbenei Gorges - Fan (Evantai) Waterfall - Flowers’ Meadow - `Live Fire` (Focul Viu) Glacier Cave - Glavoi - Padis Cabin
You can make this circuit a bit shorter if the starting point is Glavoi (La Grajduri) camping area. We enter the trail from the stone road, as we would visit the `balconies` viewpoints, from Cetatile Ponorului. Instead of going down into the sinkholes, at the first crossroads, we continue on Yellow Spot marking, 1.5 hours to the entrance in the gorges. After a 1-hour-descent we arrive at Galbenei Karst Spring, where the waters of Galbenei river surface and Galbenei Gorges begin.
The access through the gorges is made on steep paths on the left side of the gorges and you need a bit of mountain experience to browse through them. There are steel cables or chains that help us in certain places. Once we arrive at Fan (Evantai) Waterfall (through the cave or from outside), the track continues either through the river bed (if the level is low and you don’t mind getting wet), or on the left wall, using the steel cables.
At the lower end of the gorges we arrive at a rocky road, but immediately we abandon it to climb to Flowers’ Meadow. We can fill our water bottle from a small spring from the meadow, before the 1 to 1.5 hours ascent to Live Fire (Focul Viu) Glacier Cave.
The cave is closed to the public, probably to protect the glacier inside. This is the 2nd largest underground glacier in Romania, after Scarisoara Glacier ( • SCARISOARA & GARDA de ... ).
From Live Fire Cave the track gently descends to Glavoi camping area, surrounded by pines and blueberry bushes. Speaking of blueberry, Padis area is rich in blueberry. I could pick up blueberries just behind my camping area (Episode 1: • CU CORTUL IN PADIS. Or... ).
