I am here in Germany . My hart is beating so strong to hear ans der this truck. This truck does never loosing his spirit. I love to watching this Film every year. This Film is the reason why i am driving my truck . I saw the film the first time when i was 5 or 6 yrs old . Now i am 42 and this truck dont lose absolut nothing of bis Mystik. Duck forever.
I don't know if anyone noticed. But these folks actually made several tries to recreate two scenes from the movie. The hard left through the 4-way, the U-turn to head to the shortcut into New Mexico. Very nice touch in my opinion.
Yea that hard left where the white brockway flipped looked pretty cool and by when the brockway flipped it was actually an accident it wasn’t originally supposed to happen
Its really rather amazing when I have watched the film so many times over the last 30 years and to watch this and see this truck looking so majestic going down the road. It aint full of bells and whistles and miles of chrome like some but it just looks like a truck should and does it while being very cool. Perhaps the oddest thing though is seeing this truck driving down the road on its own... Well done though to the guys who put all the hard work into looking after a beast like this!
Ok here is what I found. Many truck enthusiasts incorrectly think that this Mack had a Detroit Diesel Engine for power. The Detroit sound heard from the Mack throughout most of the movie is a combination of studio overdub, the sounds of the unit pulling the prop-Mack glider and the sound of one of the 1972 Mack's which was equipped with a Detroit Diesel 8V-71T. The tell-tale on this 1977 Mack is the Tip Turbine dual tube air cleaner. That air cleaner was ONLY used on Tip Turbine equipped Mack's. A similar, but somewhat different dual tube air cleaner is still available today on the RD series, but is built for inside/outside air intake switchability. See the RS700L Hood page for photos and more details.
THANK YOU, someone who actually understands. The two surviving main trucks in this movie were a 1977 RS712-LST and a 1970 RS731-LST. The complete restored truck in this video is the 1970 RS731-LST. The RS712-LST was a California-built version of the R786-ST. Therefore it had a California-certified engine, an ETAZ673 Tip Turbine engine. NOT the 8v71 that they overdubbed in the movie. Apparently the producers thought the Tip Turbine engine wasn't aggressive-sounding. The other two trucks were another identical 1970 Cummins-powered RS731-LST and a 1973. The 1973 was used for in-cab dialogue scenes, and the other 1970 model was sent off the bridge at the end of the movie.
I might have messed up the years on the trucks though, I do know there was a '77, '73, and two '70's. The smaller grill and dual air cleaner hoses are the giveaway that it's a western-built one.
First generation air to air intercooler. A 300+ or 325. 350 HP for full flow air to air intercooler 2-valve. Then Mack used a four valve head detuned to 350 rear wheel HP, about 413 at the flywheel. Easily turned up !!! Shhhhhh !!!
Okay, so let me clarify. We owned this rig along with the 1st unit & sold them both one went to a guy in Georgia & the other went to a trucking company in Quebec City. The engine & horn sounds you hear in the movie we’re dubbed over. This rig had a Cummins & horns that sounded like these current horns in the movie so basically it has the original touch & feeling to it. The one custom ordered for EMI had a Mack engine & the other 2 Mack’s one had a Cummins & the other had a Mack. So all the stuff you hear about the Detroit & train horns being the original engine & sound from the factory is false. It was just dubbed over because the director notice the sound from a different truck & just loved the sound of the Detroit it had.
I'd probably drive off into a ditch if I were lucky enough to see it on the road lol. It's like that for a lot of things unfortunately. I walked out the front door of my job on break a few years back and "Fifi," at the time the world's ONLY ("Doc" now makes it two) flying B-29, flew right over the front of the place at low altitude. Trying to explain the significance of it to the other people at work was like talking to the wall...
even if the engine wasnt identical its still looks the part and thats essentially the point. Its like cosplay you dont actually have armour or magic or whatever. I wonder how many people on the road realise the meaning of that big black Mack, my guess is very few. Kinda sad but it does keep it more special for those in the know
The engine was the same. Post-production, the engine sound was overdubbed with the sound of a Detroit Diesel 6-71 because the crew believed that the factory Mack Tip-Turbine engine didn't sound aggressive enough. The sound you're hearing here is the way the truck actually sounded. Dan Bruno documented the restoration of the truck on his webpage, which is unfortunately gone now as he has sold the truck. But when he purchased the truck, it still had it's original 1977 Tip-Turbine engine, numbers matching.
Convoy is my favorite trucker movie. I have seen that movie over 50 times. first time I saw it was in 1981, Have it on DVD now. Movin On Best trucker TV show
"Well we laid a strip fer the Jersey Shore An' prepared to cross the line ...I could see the bridge 'as lined with bears But I didn't have a doggone dime. I sez Pig-Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck, We just ain't a gonna pay no toll. So we crashed the gate doin' ninety-eight. I sez, let them truckers roll, 10-4" i love that movie!!!
I spoke with Dan at the ATHS show in AL last month, & he said it was setup that way for the movie. The director didn't like the normal location - he thought the truck looked too small. So he ordered the trailer to be moved back. Dan said he can't haul anything heavy due to the weight distribution - it unloads the truck!
None of the trucks ever had detroits. This 2nd unit truck along with 3rd or 4th unit had Cummins while the 1st unit rig custom ordered along with the 3rd or 4th had Mack engines. I can’t remember if it was the 3rd or 4th that had the Mack or Cummins. I’m pretty sure it was the 3rd unit that had the Cummins & 4th that had the Mack but like I said I’m not a 100%.

"This truck was "new" when filming began. It was provided thru a Mack Dealer new Albuquerque, NM, and was custom fitted with a bull bar and high-set fifth wheel to accommodate the Fruehauf Tank Trailer. This truck was used for most of the "still" shots and on-highway scenes in the movie. The truck's condition was altered and battle scarred for scenes shot early on which represented a later timeframe in the story board. This unit was damaged in the collision with the stalled patrol car outside of Albuquerque and in some re-filming of the damage to the Alvarez Jail. The final film sequence for this unit was the approach to the bridge scene and SOME of the frontal gunshot hits. This unit survived production and was rumored to be in a vehicle museum." RS700L just more "general" designation, and 1973 means, that it's post-1972 model
Seid meiner Kindheit ist Convoy mein Lieblingsfilm. Mein größter Traum war es immer einmal diesen Truck zu fahren / mitzufahren. Wird zwar immer ein Traum bleiben aber damit muß ich wohl leben. Macht weiter so!
I'm very thankful make you tell me a time out of your life to let me enjoy the old rubber duck thanks 100% I don't text very often but I do thank you for what you have accomplished on this text seeing the truck basically rubber duck means a lot to me hero thank you again for all your hard work
Nice video!! This truck looked great at the ATHS show in AL last month. I spoke with Dan there, and he is a very nice guy. It now has the guard on the front, just like the movie. A picture of it is included in the truck pics I have posted. Thanks for posting this!!!
Thank you very much for sharing. The movie was the best part of my childhood, and I still believe it was/is a master piece. Wish I could see this truck live some day - unfortunately I live across The Atlantic, so the chances are microscopic. Thank God for CZcams!! :-)
Thanks I've always dreamed as a kid when i saw the movie Convoy to ride in this truck and what it would feel like. You made that happen for me today. Thanks!!!!!!
its one of 3 truck´s i ever loved - this one, the kenworth from "the smokey and the bandit" and last but no least the tuck from spielbergst first film "duel"
That is "Ultimately cool" Wish I had the money to have the Convoy Mack or the Duel Peterbilt. Sadly (for me) the US trucks are so expensive here in the UK. One day I guess, one day....
Hello, don't be so upset, there are some very lovely vintage lorries in the UK, as well. I wouldn't mind to ride an Atkinson with the straight eight Gardner or even a Scammell bonnet type. regards
Nick Kel what's a car or a truck if you won't drive it? It's a prop, I don't give a damn how rare and special a car or truck is, if you truly love it you'll drive the hell out of it
If you read the facts from Dan's site, you will realize that the original engine in the 2nd unit truck was a Cummins 855, but has been updated to a Cummins NTC400 BCIII. He suggests replacing it with the Detroit Diesel 8V71T to duplicate the sound in the movie. I live in MO and will visit this truck in the next month or so, so I will leave a video or feedback on it if the grill has been installed. I've been a fan of this truck, the movie, the cast (Ernest RIP), since I was 9. I'm excited.
There was 2 types of engine i heard in the film the quiter was a cummins i believe and the engine that roared more would have been a gm detroit that i can figure out please correct if im wrong
@tomde3 The truck is not hauling any fuel ! The tanker trailer was made as a lightweight prop for the film and only weighs about 3 tonnes, the tanker part is just a hollow lightweight tube strengthend with steel bracing to keep the rigidity to stop it flexing in motion.and under braking, also as the trailer weighs so little it is allowed not to run with no braking capability legally as the tractor unit is more than capable of stopping the entire vehicle safetly.
camelback ain't all that bad different kinds 38 38 anti sway 44 44 anti sway etc there's different center lengths and it's a R-Model 700 series means longer hood app one ft longer and the grill cover is that of a Mack Western !!! and the one in the movie sounded different cause it had a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke with a direct 10-speed Fuller.
I remember driving my first one at 14 just outside Macon Georgia on our way to Chicago in 1988 I drove from Georgia to Tennessee line and through Kentucky to Illinois boarder
Question. Do you need a CDL to operate this thing? Or is this considered a recreational vehicle? Me and my good friend have some dreams we wish to fullfill one day...
Nice video! Always loved the Rubber Duck Mack since i was a little kid. Maybe you can help telling me, what kind of engine this bad boy have and how many BHP? 😎
the real truck was returned to mack after filming and turned into a dumoper or rolloff, it was painted yellow, lookup convey on google it has movie quirks, truck stuff etc, like there was a kw used as pigpens mack, in a few scenes, they call it a "cruise whopper, look at he movie in a highwaqy scene close u can see the mack is a kw lol
@mccrackenphillip but 5 mack trucks were used in the making of the film so the year for that one could range from 1973-1977 and some could be Mack RS786LST
@BXM4C I would think that being that far back would lighten up the front tires too much as well as overload that rear axle. Assuming the trailer was loaded of course. I'm not a trucker, so I could be wrong.
@thunder393 Confusin' a dodge smallblock motor for a detroit. No worries. :) In the movie, it was actually powered by a 360 Cummins, though with the sounds of an 8v92 detroit dubbed over.
I am here in Germany . My hart is beating so strong to hear ans der this truck.

Yes, I noticed as well, and it was brilliantly done each time!

I drive an R model Mack everyday. It may not have all the correct specs but I love it !!! Great Job.
So happy this truck is still alive and well. I’d have a Detroit 8V71 fitting and the air horns changing so it sounds correct too.
The sound in the movie was the truck pulling the Mack on a trailer when they filmed inside the truck scenes apparently
This restoration is fantastic. I love the sound of this air horn compared to what it sounded like in the movie.
Ok here is what I found.

great movie, sad to think most people that saw that truck wouldn't even recognize it

I'm pretty sure it's either an 8V71 or 8V92, it's definitely a V8 2 Stroke, the Inline and V 6 models had a different and higher pitched note.
LSSAH it was a 318 Detroit which is a 6 cylinder
The Unforgotten 318 is a v8, the v6 is a 238
Convoy is my favorite trucker movie. I have seen that movie over 50 times. first time I saw it was in 1981, Have it on DVD now. Movin On Best trucker TV show
"HEY DUCK, YA COMMING BACK!?" what a brilliant truck. I wounder if anyone has told Kris Kristofferson.

Mack, the best truck ever made, loved that big black mack, loved the movie convoy, going to put the DVD in and watch it for old times sake, over and out!!!
I would love to see a cameo with kris kristoferson back up at the wheel again.
What is a cameo
Bulldog Mack with a can on back
And a jaguar hauling ass
Dan Bruno must be proud to have both the rubberduck truck, and the duel truck.
Great American set of wheels.
I'm very thankful make you tell me a time out of your life to let me enjoy the old rubber duck thanks 100% I don't text very often but I do thank you for what you have accomplished on this text seeing the truck basically rubber duck means a lot to me hero thank you again for all your hard work

That is one sexy truck!!
Are you carrying 10,000 gallons of nitromannite.
They better take a look at the signs on the side of my trailer.
If he is shoot the trailer not
What's funny is that in real life that trailmobile only could haul like 5,800 gallons or so.
Yes
Thank you very much for sharing.
The movie was the best part of my childhood, and I still believe it was/is a master piece.
Wish I could see this truck live some day - unfortunately I live across The Atlantic, so the chances are microscopic.

I love the looks of that truck................................
i love convoy splendid!
Thanks I've always dreamed as a kid when i saw the movie Convoy to ride in this truck and what it would feel like. You made that happen for me today. Thanks!!!!!!
they have this same truck at the st. louis based museum of transportation.
That turbo spin up / down sound is lovely
its one of 3 truck´s i ever loved - this one, the kenworth from "the smokey and the bandit" and last but no least the tuck from spielbergst first film "duel"
you out there finding Dirty Lyle
yes, he is trying
Amazing the DOT allows those markings on the trailer without any current Haz-Mat violations for operating without a load.
The trailer is gutted out,no inner tank at all
It's amazing, the number of ppl with heads stuck up their arses = no flashes, beeps or waves.......🤣
That is "Ultimately cool" Wish I had the money to have the Convoy Mack or the Duel Peterbilt. Sadly (for me) the US trucks are so expensive here in the UK. One day I guess, one day....
Hello,
don't be so upset, there are some very lovely vintage lorries in the UK, as well.
I wouldn't mind to ride an Atkinson with the straight eight Gardner or even a Scammell bonnet type.

My father owns one of the two remaining original convoy trucks!!! We travel around the southeast to different truck shows
Omni Havoc Hell no you wouldn't drive that thing around. You would haul it in risk of it getting recked. don't lie.
Nick Kel what's a car or a truck if you won't drive it? It's a prop, I don't give a damn how rare and special a car or truck is, if you truly love it you'll drive the hell out of it

Rubber Duck - Kris Kristofferson my favorite is still alive! ;-)
god i love it!
i would do anything to just drive at that classic vehicle.
I love this truck 🛻
Semi Mack Truck is my favorite one
cool truck! its just missing 2 things: the grillguard and the original airhorns then it would be precise. other than that, nice truck!
Didn't the Convoy Mack have a brush guard.
+John doe It does. I believe Dan added shortly after this was filmed.
Yea
And the sound of the truck is not the same from the film
There was 2 types of engine i heard in the film the quiter was a cummins i believe and the engine that roared more would have been a gm detroit that i can figure out please correct if im wrong
@@lukasbergsch1969 Do you mean the horn doesn't match the one in the movie?
that truck is awesome, wish i had one
What a superb piece of movie history to own......Awesome!
I do recognize. I've been watching the movie most of the time until I saw the return of the Mack as the rubber duck truck.
I love these U.S. trucks!!
The coolest looking truck in the world. Fact right there
How do you like those Leaf Springs?!
I'll call your Proctologist and tell him you're on your way. LOL!
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING OUTSTANDING!!!!!
That was a heck of a movie. it kicked off the padded vest, trucker hat era
What a joy, one day I'll get a go in one, well of to work and my old crappy daf cf
That is totally cool....loved that movie.
I REALLY DO LIKE THE BLACK MACK I WOULD LOVE TO DRIVE ONE OF THOSE TRUCKS 🚚
Just love that old black mack.
Great Truck, a great movie ;)
@tomde3 The truck is not hauling any fuel ! The tanker trailer was made as a lightweight prop for the film and only weighs about 3 tonnes, the tanker part is just a hollow lightweight tube strengthend with steel bracing to keep the rigidity to stop it flexing in motion.and under braking, also as the trailer weighs so little it is allowed not to run with no braking capability legally as the tractor unit is more than capable of stopping the entire vehicle safetly.
its called bull bar
camelback ain't all that bad different kinds
38
38 anti sway
44
44 anti sway
etc
there's different center lengths
and it's a R-Model
700 series means longer hood app one ft longer
and the grill cover is that of a Mack Western !!!
and the one in the movie sounded different cause it had a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke
with a direct 10-speed Fuller.
oh breaker 1-9 breaker 1-9, unreal. id buy that truck in an instant. love it
sweeeeeeeet the bull bar would really set it off... great truck
I love that big black mack truck.
Yes you would need a CDL because of the trailer and air brakes
Wow! Awesome, a real Rubber Duck look alike! But you need the front Bullbar! Awesome truck! Sounds good!
I like this fr truck, my favorite Mack truck built in 1977
Thats still a great truck... like the engine sound.
my favourite movie...convoy.....amazing.
good man, big respect (Y)
Nice video!
Always loved the Rubber Duck Mack since i was a little kid. Maybe you can help telling me, what kind of engine this bad boy have and how many BHP? 😎
Wow ! That 5th wheel is really set back !
the real truck was returned to mack after filming and turned into a dumoper or rolloff, it was painted yellow, lookup convey on google it has movie quirks, truck stuff etc, like there was a kw used as pigpens mack, in a few scenes, they call it a "cruise whopper, look at he movie in a highwaqy scene close u can see the mack is a kw lol
I'm jealous damn it!
0:43. It's called a Clutch! Use it or loose it!
I'm telling The Duck you're grinding his gears.
he wasn't grinding
ever heard of floating the gears plus those old trucks did not have air assist shift so you heard the click every time the gear grabbed
Can someone explain why the 5th wheel is set back so far on this truck? I noticed it was that way in the movie too. Great video you lucky dog!
i love that sound of horn.
beautiful black mack truck your lucky to have it
Cool horn
@mccrackenphillip but 5 mack trucks were used in the making of the film so the year for that one could range from 1973-1977 and some could be Mack RS786LST
Nice job, Anders. We enjoyed having you over.
凄く綺麗な、ラバーダックのレプリカトラック🚚でビックリしました😁👍
Der geilste truck den habe ich selber als modell mir nachgebaut
Nothing like a Bulldog Mack with a Can on Back
Oh my fucking... what a beauty!
Still beatiful ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ listen to that motor spinn❤️❤️❤️
the duck vs the snowman, who will win? the world will sadly never know
Seems to me like they'd declare it an even draw!
Joshua Leforce I mean the Snowman did some badass turns and stuff like that but who knows
That was cool as hell man i would like to see more and it is my favorite
I love this truck one of my favorite truck in movie
@BXM4C I would think that being that far back would lighten up the front tires too much as well as overload that rear axle. Assuming the trailer was loaded of course. I'm not a trucker, so I could be wrong.
@thunder393 Confusin' a dodge smallblock motor for a detroit. No worries. :)
In the movie, it was actually powered by a 360 Cummins, though with the sounds of an 8v92 detroit dubbed over.
Yes you have to have a CDL, I want to drive that truck but for real! Idling in a parking lot would just be a slap in the face to me.
We got a great big convoy rollin thru the night
That truck needs those bull bars bad man. The truck isn't complete without them.
Wow definitely so damn COOL
That's a nice truck
Wow set up a business mate ……I’d pay big bucks to just experience driving that down my motorway in the uk …😊😊
The main truck in the movie had a Detroit diesel in it, chosen for the sound it makes. As for the horn I can't recall off hand.
