Whoever attended this MTV NYE show got a very special treat seeing Duran Duran and a Flock of Seagulls. I wonder if any of those people there have seen this recording and realize how special a show that was. I was a pre-teen at the time and very enamored with the Brit bands. Duran Duran went on to become super huge in 1983 through 1985 - many of their famous hits were at that time. They have sold more albums than any band worldwide since then, except for the Beatles. Quite an achievement for Brit guys who are self-taught.

@@paulsf1990Not enough young people would watch something like this to make a 24/7 music TV channel profitable. We live in an age where people can pull up any song they want on CZcams. Young people don't even watch that much TV period, their free time is taken up by Twitter, YT, TikTok and Instagram. I'm sure there's a small group of hipsters who would ironically tune in to a "new" MTV every now and then to show how cool and retro they are, but not in any kind of significant numbers. And yeah, while the other commenter was pretty blunt and tactless about it they were right. Those social media platforms do encourage self-centered, egotistic, materialistic behaviour. @Bryce well to be fair certain decades DO have superior things than others like the 2000s had more advanced tech than the 80s and the 2010s more than the 2000s. Doesn’t mean ppl weren’t content with what he had back then. But still. Apparently MTV was its authentic self in the 80s and 90s before things changed so80s and 90s would get points for that.

Just before M.T.V. came out. H.B.O. in between movies they would play skate away dire straits. The first music video ever made was elvis Presley's jailhouse rock. Every morning before going to school. At the same time every damn morning at 6:30.am it was the fix. One thing leads to another. And rebel yell. Billy idol.

I was 13...I'm 51 now...I aged the appropriate number of years while you found the fountain of youth... But I DO remember this thing called MTV - it was fun and new and the only thing we wanted to watch for most of the 80s after school. It's now an oddly quaint remnant of that decade laden with nostalgia.

@@csfan65 Yes but they were still very new to America. I read recently that Hungry Like the Wolf, which was introduced December 1982 on radio, but the video release in 1983 is what catapulted them into stardom in the US. The rest is history (or fate) as they say.
