  • Welcome back to another episode of "Let's Paint A Statue!" Today Im going over the basics of a black and white dry brush finish. I get a lot of questions regarding this type of finish and its not as hard as it may look. Keep in mind a gloss or semi gloss paint will not provide as good as results, but feel free to play around. Thank for watching and happy painting!

Thank you for sharing! I can't wait until I get to the point where I have items to paint. I am still in the process of making molds...have several ready for the mother mold process right now so I am getting closer! It is all such a learning curve for me and I have learned soooooooooooooooooo much from watching your videos. You are a very generous man to share your talents with everyone. Sending many good vibes to you and yours...

Quite an interesting optic phenomenon... I reckon specific properties of the black primer or the white paint may play a role in people perceiving the pieces to have a bluish hue. There are no pigments 100% exclusively of a single hue, even the most "pure" ones will have undertones that can subtly affect the perceived color. I understand my ivory black pigment as having a cooler tone than the iron oxide black one, which I can perceive emitting some red light ('diffuse reflection' the name of the game).
Speaking of light, when it hits rough or textured surfaces like the statues, it scatters in different directions. More so as the white dry-brushing on the black primer creates itself a textured surface that can scatter light in a way that might give the pieces a bluish look.
All in all-given that perception is an individual experience dependant on personal cognitive and physiological traits-our brains interpret colors not only on the other colors surrounding it ('color context' the name of this game here) but based on lighting conditions as well. Hence, the black primer may be influencing how the white dry-brushing is perceived, in such a way that makes the statue appear to give off a bluish appearance ("blue vibes", could very well be the name here if you ask me). Or 'viblues'! Well, maybe not...

We used a scrub brush and water to remove most debris, if it needs a cleaning agent use diluted vinegar. Rinse very well before painting.

So, i acquired a few old concrete.statues, and have applied.the black base to them. Quesrion.. if a start with the white on black (easiest) effect, and feel adventuois afterwards, can i begin to apply colours to give a more detailed finish , or would i need to go back to the black base again? I have a badger with clothes, and a wheelbarrow, on a cobbled street base, so im thinking a grey street (white on black might suffice) brown wooden wheelbarrow and maybe get adventurous with his boits clothes amd cap.
Do us a badger please please please 🤣🤣, id love to see yr technique for applying his stripes, hopwfully softly dusted, not a solid slab of white .. apologies for the long comment.

Your ideas sound great! Definitely try it and if your not happy you can go back over with black just in that area if needed and then try again. We’ll keep a badger in mind for future videos for sure!
