  • The Shopbot Digitizing Probe is just one of the many accessories ShopBot has available to use with our CNC machines. We provided one to WWGOA's George Vondriska to use with his ShopBot Desktop CNC and see what it adds to the CNC's capabilities.
The digitizing probe allows you to make a copy of an object in 3D by attaching to your ShopBot CNC in place of the router bit. The object you want to copy is then placed on the table of your ShopBot and is probed to create a digital file. This is helpful when in need of duplicating a piece of decorative trim or molding, making it very useful for luthiers, furniture makers, and those doing restoration work. It can also be used to trace the outline edges of a flat part to produce a 2D file for cutting. Either way, you have the ability to create multiple versions from the resulting file and you can also scale that file up or down.
Take a look at how George uses it with his ShopBot Desktop on both a natural object and an existing sculptural piece.

Good question! Our probe is designed to work only with our 3-axis machines as the touch points are only able to translate to the software we use as vertical touch points. We recommend looking into 3D scanning for full 3D modeling. Hope that info helps!
