WAIT!! James sewed the sand into the bottom of his sack.Something really stuck with him when his older brother told him " you can act dumb but don't be dumb". On the day of the first weigh in the overseer checked the bottom of his bag so I think James decided to sew something that night to help make the difference. Momma Ernestine was sewing patches on the bottom of his pants in case he couldn't stand any longer. I think the writers wanted to show how quickly James caught on and how smart he is.

That old wicked preacher is the reason that Master Macon has put little James in the field. Remember how the Preacher (while he was painting) looked at James & the Master's son when they were running & playing together last week?

so I'm surprised you didn't touch on 'Stine's monologue bout being jealous of Pearliemae. I've never heard that perspective of the house slave being jealous of the field slave, it's always tje other way around. but it makes PERFECT sense. Like she said, master own the field slave from sun up to sun down, but when that sun go down they get to have a moment to themselves. Get to have a man...raise their families...room to breath. They don't have that in the house. They are on 24/7. I thought that was deep!
ANYway chile, on behalf of Elizabeth I'm bringing roasted asparagus and green bean casserole, and a BOX of wine, cuz that white girl DEFINITELY invited to the fune--OKAY!!!!

I've decided to break up with Scandal. Listen, our relationship was great in the beginning but over time it has gotten bland and steadily gone downhill. We can still be friends, but I'm in love with someone else: Underground is my new beau and it was truly love at first sight.
Side Note: Empire was just a one night stand. Ain't nothing substantial there.

+CzarJuliusIII I agree. I watched Scandal before Underground and was like they're recycling stuff from 2 seasons ago. Underground is my new lover too and I want it to evolve like American Crime where it's an anthology of stories. This season Georgia, next season Missouri, 3rd season Virginia, 4th season the North and Canada showing what happens when people get to the North. Anyway a girl can dream.

Ooh, one more catch-peep how they keep showing the "candy." It pacifies Boo, James is no longer entitled to it, it angers Henry when they offer it to him at the asylum in an attempt to see his mother, and T.R. brings it right back full circle trying to offer it to James-who doesn't want it at this point. Yes, the coming of age.

Honey! This episode right here and the theme of them babies! Oh, it tore me up! And I include Henry as a baby too, we learned a lot about him. He was basically a little boy in search of love and acceptance. We learned he never had a family, so it was very important to him, his relationship with Noah, which is why Cato could play on his emotions the way he did. BUT, Noah reassured him in their conversation while he was giving him a tattoo that they ARE family.

Q, I love you new style of reviewing and your take on this episode. But what about the constant presence of Necco candy in each scene involving the children of underground. I actually had the research the company to figure out the significance. The writers and researchers are really on point, the Necco brand dates back to the 1800's. Necco wafers were considered a treat back in slavery time. In the episode, Necco wafers seem to be used as a symbol of childhood treat or rejected when one of the children no longer had the privilege of being a child any longer. Wondering if anyone else noticed it??

When she spotted those three catchers on the tracks and he thought she was looking at him and he said "You see something you like house girl?" and then in the boat when he asked about Her getting her first strips he didn't touch her scars or her arms, he touched her hand. Then tonight they why he was talking about her to Henry saying "Oh yeah, she's well made"....etc I believe Cato is going to try and move in on her if he get the chance.

SOME Indians had a hand in helping slaves to freedom. There were some that owned slaves as well, those of the so called "5 Civilized Tribes". We learned that from African American Lives 2. But also, in the southern parts of the Americas, especially the islands, they tried to enslave the Indians, okay Natives or First Nations, too. There is a book coming out called "The Other Slavery: The uncovered story of Indian enslavement in America" about their enslavement in the new territories of California, Arizona, etc.

I've never commented on any video on CZcams, but I just had to today! Most of the time, we only see the adult perspective on the affects of slavery in our community. Underground gave the children a voice and it pained me to watch them go through what millions of others before them experienced. It's so unfortunate that children these days don't understand the magnitude of what it took to have the liberties that they have today. There is STILL so much work to be done, but most of us alive today NEVER went through this! Thank you Q for your review and keep up the good work! I've been a fan since the beginning and want to wish you much more success! #D9Love #DST1913

You are incorrect. Native Americans are Indians. There are different races of Indians, yes, but people from India do not have a monopoly on the term. Indians spanned from North to South America including the Caribbean. Its only in America that they are called "Native Americans" everywhere else they are simply called Indians! The same way, its only in America that black people are called "African American", blacks in all the other parts of the world are simply called black or whichever country (not continent) they are originally from. So don't become a victim to unnecessary political correctness. The next time a person from India tries to "check" you, go ahead and check them right back...with facts!

My college education taught me that the ancient Siberians (Asians, hence their resemblance to Eskimo's, Early Natives/indigenous people and Hawaiians) crossed the Bering Straits several thousands of years ago into America based on genealogy. I could have sworn that the Portuguese/Spaniards coined that nationality based on the Indian ocean and West Indies....I could be wrong. With that being said I believe that Cato played on Henry's mind because he knew Henry came from a breeding farm which by the way I didn't even know of. So in a sense Henry didn't have family and he attached himself to those who took interest in him. And when Cato made it evident that Noah stopped hanging with Henry cause of Rosalee, that made Henry a little jealous. When the Indian asked Henry about his family and he said IDK I was born on a breeding farm so I never met my parents but I guess I have a lot of brothers and sisters I don't know. That right there spoke to a lot of the climate of the black family.

Last episode Elizabeth told her husband they had to do whatever it took to protect their cargo. I'm glad that she wasn't just "talking" and actually did what it took. I agree that Sam truly showed what it meant to be your brothers keeper. Switching the bags and trying to but James freedom took me all the way in. I told my friend that I truly believe Henry messed the tracks up and got them caught. He's also the reason they were shot at a few episodes back. I just need him to learn to stay put. So with that being said I will provide bottled water and paper towels for the fune.

      B) why you keep letting these slaves walk out and about during the day?
      C) she got caught

1492 for Columbus. The Native American - African American history checks out in my own lineage. My maternal grandmother's grandfather was Cherokee Native American from North Carolina, but her father was Jamaican because workers were imported to the Carolina's from the Caribbean still even after slavery, but not all of them stayed here. THIS WHOLE EPISODE just messed me ALL the way up! Q - that whole TR rejection reaction is EXACTLY how the ancestral Anglo Saxon ego trip they've been on for years! You hit the nail on the head and I tweeted the same thing just before watching your review. The coming of theme through the eyes of the children was the most genius idea I seen on television in a long time! Never thought of Elizabeth's infertility until you mentioned it, but I did think of her now feeling the plight of the life/death decisions that slave mothers had to make all the time. Not to mention upholding the mission of her husband saving slaves. The scene were James makes weight, reverberates as the dichotomy of the Black male coming of age. -- In closing, I'll bring Teri from Soul Food's cornbread for the fune.

Stine gonna have to craft kill TR and Noah just needs to stab Cato to death! Cato also plottin on Rosalee but we'll see what Noah does about that! I feel like Sam is done for and James is going to so crafty to have a big part in taking down the plantation! I sure hope boo make it out alive and I can't believe her poor daddy died like that! I cant wait until next week damnnnn I have to watch this episode again!

Ok, so this episode made me want to research Native Americans and Slaves... I discovered a CZcams video of Don Cheadle finding out his ancestors were owned by Native Americans. The five civilized tribes were separate entities of the United States so they weren't governed by their laws. Therefore when slaves were freed, some tribes kept theirs. It wasn't until later that a treaty was signed with them that stated they must free their slaves. They freed them but didn't offer them citizenship. So his ancestors were considered a people without a country. They were neither american or citizens of that tribe... MY MIND IS BLOWN!

This episode!!! Baybay!!! Now this episode centered around the children brought me to tears. This was a coming of age for all of them. James got out there and saw it was a different world from what he was use to and he grew so quickly and he's younger than T.R. T.R. Is still in child mode playing and whatnot and not seeing him do much else. The slightest bit of rejection from James he turned on him. Those scenes with Boo and Elizabeth had me in tears and the children singing those songs didn't help either lol. I loved how the candy was symbolism throughout the episode.
