Where do you get you engine repair specs, like tork settings etc?
You guys! I just spoke with the previous owner of 20 years! I recorded the entire conversation and he told me the car's entire history! Stay tuned for the next Corvette video!
Wow! I can't wait to see that one. I'd love to know how the car ended up in an auction yard when it really didn't have anything major wrong with it.
Awesome! Can't wait

I feel bad for this guy, seeing his baby of 20 years and thousands of dollars in mods.... Get sold for 3k.... 3 bloody k.. Like dude that's rough Lol.
Pretty amazing that this car was dropped to auction because folks gave up on it and Alex diagnoses and fixes the mess in a couple weeks. You have a gift, sir. Keep up the great work
LSC is one of the few channels on youtube that gets projects done!
True
you have goonzquad thats on it to but not the same video format.
That is right!

Don't shorten the videos. People like me who wrench love to see you work. Too much BS on MTR-TREND with no tech. Your tech is #1 and your enthusiasm makes us want to do the same. Your videos are real, you are real so please don't listen to the people who send their cars to the mechanics to get repaired. PLEASE DON'T SHORTEN THE VIDEOS. If people want shorter videos watch the youtube shorts. Otherwise they can shut up and stop ruining my life, lol. Keep up the great work.
I know absolutely NOTHING about cars but you guys really take your time to show how things work. And Peter is like an encyclopedia, stuck in “random-mode”. Your conversation spans from cars and engines, to music and movies, and to some quick Japanese translations - AWESOME!!!
Noticed in the drive at the end your steering wheel had a lot of play. There’s a knuckle in there that gets worn out from the driver holding the wheel to get out of the car. I’m so thrilled you have it running. Really love this car.
YEP! Bought a '91 with 34k and watched a DO NOT DO video about C4s...first thing was grabbing the wheel to exit.
For safety's sake, you might want to use Stoddard solvent instead of gasoline iin the test bench. The solvent has similar flow properties to gasoline without the explosion hazard.
"Varsol" is a common trade name. But common mineral spirits work just as good. I own a slightly fancier version of the injector cleaner (and also have a C4 Corvette!).
Yeah! I was like Don't put gasoline in that machine man! I suppose if one connection behind that back panel is faulty, hello burn center! Just the fumes alone are kinda scary!
dude these videos are phenomenal, I'm not even that big of a car guy and you somehow make these so entertaining
Thanks!
Alright Alex, Max and Peter! Another win for the channel. :) I know that these cars are always a gamble and you don't always win, but it is so satisfying when you do get one for cheap and it's an easy fix. And 500 crank HP?! What a deal! I'm really proud of you all for hitting over 800K subscribers and I'm eager to see where the channel goes from here! Keep up all of the great work!
It's a nice problem to have when you say "almost 800,000 subscribers" in the video and by the time it posts you add 10,000 more.
I really appreciate how you troubleshoot the systems and find the actual issues instead of just throwing parts at it and hoping that you'll get lucky and fix the problem. I have the basic tools to do the majority of the driveway repairs needed to keep my vehicles on the road but it is content like this that helps me to figure out what I need to learn to be able to repair something that I haven't tackled before with a lot more confidence than the old Haynes or Chilton manual ever did. Great job getting that beauty back on the road. She sounds mean as hell!
Alex with those O ring kits I have found that if you buy the metric set as well as the Imperial one you will see that the metric ones are on the cross section, that they are considerably thinner. And you can use that to your advantage in this case. I'm not sure if they are marketed imperial and metric in the US, but they are here in the UK and I have both sets. Saved my bacon many times lol
Best internet car repair advice of 2022!!! Not all hero's wear capes!
@@Springfield-eo8jl I just wear mine inside out and remain incognito lol
Also, just spring for the green ones too.
They are like that in the Harbor Freight kits in the USA. I bought both the Metric and the SAE kits, and I've never NOT found an O-ring that fit what I was repairing. 9 bucks a piece for each kit, with somethimg like 288 pieces per kit. I don't think I'll ever need to buy more during the rest of my life.
Hi alex i wanted to point out that at 43:55 you shouldn't put dialectric grease inside where the spark plug mount into the boot . Dialectric grease are an electrical isolator not a conductor so you want it all around the electrical connection for it to not jump into near by metal surfaces but not directly between the 2 connection ie the boot and the spark plug end . It will make it harder for spark to go through the isolator
Huh?? It's SUPPOSED to go inside the rubber boot. The grease makes it easier to install and remove, and it seals the boot to help keep the moisture out, and the spark in.
Where do YOU think you are supposed to put it, all over the outside of it? 😕🤦🏻
@@davelowets not outside . he should cover the walls inside the boot or cover the white porcelain part of the spark plug with the grease before installing the boot on the spark plug , and being carefull not to put the grease where the spark plug metal end meets with the matal wire inside the boot and grease becomes between the two connectors . If that happen the grease will isolate electricity between the two connections because its an isolator. Thats what i mean .
@@davelowets sorry for the late response i rarely check youtupe notifications

Agreed. I don’t have any interest in videos like these for unattainable cars.
Indeed.
It seemed to me after Tavarish did a Lamborghini project every other channel had a Lamborghini project.
It got quite tedious to be honest.
Alex is awesome...
Hey Alex, an easy way to deal with a locking gas cap that you don't have a key for is with a radiator hose removal tool. Or any tool that is like a heavy duty pick shapes like a hook. Just run the hook under the cap and lift up around the outer edge and the cap will come right off
.
This youtuber puts in so much work for us!
Alex, dielectric grease is exactly that, dielectric. It is an insulating grease. That stuff should be used after the termination is made. The terminal should make dry solid contact with source of power then apply dielectric to the termination. A lot of folks apply that stuff to battery terminals before installing the battery cable when it is intended to be applied after the cable is already installed and tight.
I like how he said he's gonna "put a little on there" and then slathers half a tube all over, lol.
Yes!! Insulator not isolator!! I do use it on electrical plugs and spark plug boots among other places but not on battery terminals. Just my preference.unless you want old junk but otherwise just always Use a terminal isolator and good, clean, tight terminals and you will never see any build up of acids. Another good idea is to ALWAYS on aluminum heads use a very small amount of antiseize on spark plug threads so that you can safely achieve proper torque on plugs and later be removed!! And for header/mani. Bolts/studs I always use either Stainless steel spray or zinc spray on fasteners b4 and after installation! Old timer trick that was passed to me years ago lol! And don't forget to isolate your plug wires for passive interference reduction. Haha
In case of another rescue with an LT1 and you actually do have to replace the wires WITHOUT a supercharger in the way... Unbolting the power steering pump makes it 10x easier to do!
Each video I watch from you inspires me to work on my own projects. You fix things that I can see myself doing and it gives me the confidence to start ripping things apart
Alex, Peter and Max, My family and I learn so much from your channel. Almost at a million subs.
The work that gets done on this channel is amazing
EVERYONE HAS A FRIEND LIKE PETER! CRAZY, FUNNY BUT YOU GOT TO LOVE HIM!
One of the most satisfying "mini series" yet. I've always had a thing for the C4 body style. Thanks for this gem!
So, I'm a carpenter. I don't know jack about cars. I ended up spending my day watching you fix this for some reason. I suppose it is like when I restore furniture. Just the act of taking something disused and making it nice again is fun to do and to watch. Kudos sir.
This is my favorite project going on right now in the automotive youtube space. It's automotive archeology (of an interesting subject car) with real enthusiasm. My only question is, why not give the car a good clean under the hood so you aren't working in all that grime? Keep these vids coming!
I had one of these about 10 years ago. My ex sold it out from under me, with my mustang gt, when we split. Never leave your project titles open. Love the videos. It brings back memories.
One thing on the pistons that I've heard is the notch you saw on one of them is typically there pointing to the front of the engine on factory pistons. It not typically on a aftermarket piston.
Many aftermarket pistons also have some sort of an identifying mark to indicate the front on them.
@@davelowets I've heard that. I also haven't seen very many aftermarket pistons and the ones I've don't have a notch. My point was that they are most likely the factory ones if they all have that notch. But good point.
@@ProCarsGaming556 Yea, those were factory. 🍻
I found your channel during the recent DeLorean episodes. I enjoy the no filler content and the actual goals reached at the end of videos. It is refreshing to have someone say in this video this will be done and it is.
I love your methodical, logical, and educated approach to these projects. I can definitely see the Mercedes tech discipline in all you do. I think it's a huge reason why your content is so enjoyable. Many of the other car shows, the guys talk a lot of blather and I find myself tapping the skip forward functionality to get to the actual point, but not with your videos.

If one day that LT fails if would be a perfect time for a ls3 swap video!
I enjoy this series because it's very familiar from my time working in a small garage in the late 90s.
I had 1 customer that was a judge and she always liked her corvettes and vipers.
I was in my 20s and looked like I was in my teens. She was very worried I was too young to know how to tune up her cars.
Once after a brake job. I gave her a few old bolts I had in our stock and said " I have a few extra for some reason"
She went into my bosses office and yelled at him. But then realized I pranked her. I became her favorite.
I snagged an 87 C4 with a 4+3DN a couple of months ago, ran terrible so I got it for cheap. Turns out the injector rail 1 fuse was blown and a few plug wires werent clicked on properly. Now I'm just going down the list of things that probably need replacing before they go bad. Sweet ride man and cool video!

Legit Street Success. Congrats on breaking 800K, and my favorite part of this video was Peter's chuckle when Alex got sprayed with fuel.
Alex and ピーター, great video. I have a 1996 LT1 Camaro SS and it took us 4 hours to change the plugs, the passenger side rear plug I had to get my (then) 16 year old daughter to change that one because of how much room there was (or wasn’t in this case). I got local mechanic friend of mine to change the wires, it took him 2 days because there were metal shields OVER the plug wires running BEHIND the manifolds. He ended up having to drop the exhaust manifolds (and a BUNCH of other stuff) to get to the bolts that held those shields on. My Camaro has 47k miles on it, but that’s the last time I’m changing the plugs and wires 😏

That Corvette is going to be killer when it's all said and done. The fuel injector cleaner was one of the best investments I've made, but you must not forget to change the injectors filter too, there's a tool for that but you can do it with household items.
This channel is great at sharing how to evaluate whether parts actually need to be replaced, then, repairing or keeping parts where it is sensible. That has a lot of value to those trying to learn to maximize their budgets (or stay on one). I'm a long-time C3 Corvette owner/fan that has a lot of projects that I'm trying to get the courage for, and this channel is helps
Watching this makes me appreciate how "easy" the plugs are to change on my LS1 F-Body. All jokes aside great seeing someone actually doing real work on cars and not afraid to show all the challenges encountered doing the job. LSC always a good watch.
Definitely one of my favorite projects going now, it’s super neat seeing all the 90s stuff coming back!
I love your channel man! It’s like doing work on a car as a kid with your dad or uncle and they try and explain stuff in layman’s terms! So you’re a little more interested!
Don’t forget, TPI, LT1 & LT4 run happy at 196-226 temp. So even an unmodified, one should have the spark plug wires wrapped. One of the first modifications I did to mine was upgrade the radiator get a 180° thermostat and put a better water pump on it and wrap my spark plug wires. they just like to run hot. They’re happy there.
facts
Most later model cars run that hot...
The purpose is to help them pass emissions.
@@davelowets I took out the smog pump, 3rd cat and did the throttlebody coolant bypass.
@@Joe-wv7pv 😆 You should have left it run hot, so it's "happy there". 😜
@@davelowets lol but I won’t I live in a hot climate
I believe that phantom vacuum hose is the HVAC vent selector vacuum. A far as the water pump weep hole, JB-weld a 90 degree brass elbow on it and use a silicone hose to route the dump behind the optispark thowards the ground.
For the inside of the plug wire terminals, you can try a brass barrel brush for a 22 rifle. Chuck it in a drill and should get down in there better than the one you tried. I use barrel brush to help clean all sort of stuff.
Good tip on the O-ring kit I bought a cheap one on Amazon and have used it so many times. It was like $15 for hundreds. Instead of buying them individually.
Go to Harbor Freight... Same kit for $8.99. 288 pieces.
You should do what I did and build a cabinet to put your ultrasonic cleaner in. I lined the inside of mine with sound dampening material. No more high pitched scritch sound.
Love the car, I bet some people have been chasing that spark issue for a while. Can't wait to see your convo with previous owner.
just found your channel from the fox body video earlier and it’s safe to say that this is my new favorite car channel on youtube !!! i’m learning so much just watching and i’m currently working on an e36 revival project so i’m able to apply everything i’m learning from here so this is amazing. you guys have amazing energy and are awesome. stoked to keep up !!
At 34:00, that plastic material around the spark plug wires is called spiral wrap. In aviation we use it to protect wires from any abrasion on contacting surfaces due to vibration. Seeing it on those wires makes little sense to me due to the wires having heat sleeves. Awesome shop and cars!
2am over here & I'm in for your C4, congratulations on getting such a nice one, Rj in Oz
Hi Alex on 39:53 there’s an unplugged sensor on the block. The white one above the spark plug

Alex you are an inspiration to how we want to conduct our channel. Thanks for great content with both mistakes and victories.
Thanks brother!
Also thank you for highlighting this. You’re a great guy in so many ways. We appreciate the hand up. 💯
It was a miracle the car even started with all those issues 😮
Nice fixes but I'd be really tempted to install new ignition wires
For sure..
For spark plug wires, I use an OHM meter to check the resistance of each wire... less resistance equals more energy to your plugs. My wires have 25 ohms per foot. Most plug wires have a lot more resistance. I would make sure all my wires, including the coil wire were new!
Especially given that the cleaner/tester machine "recycles" the working fluid, it's a bit surprising there's no filter on the line feeding the rail.
Maybe it's internal, near the pump... 🤷🏻
There are actually baskets pressed into top of injectors. They are meant to be replaced
@@richardstockwell4862 Yeah, but good engineering practice eliminates debris as early as possible. Not including a visible, easily replaceable inline grit filter is just poor design, IMHO.
@@supermarioisacat hey if only we used good engineering practices making automobiles we would all be better off

Wow!!! You got a hell of a deal!!! And an easy fix on that vette. Nice job Alex!!!
Great deal! I’m enjoying watching this C4 series! That is spiral wrap that was around the plug wires, I’ve only see it in aviation, but I use it on my vehicles to help with chafing.

this was a nice one to pick up - you should vacuum/dgrease engine/pressure wash
Did you watch the video? He SAID he already planned on doing it. 😕
One of my favorite videos ever. I used to have a 95 camaro lt1 that i learned to wrench on.
Great vid. I had a 95 Camaro with LT1, and took it in to an independant mechanic to get the plugs changed. He called 2 hrs later and told me to come pick it up, as he had only done 5 of the plugs and couldn't get to the other 3. I had to take it to the dealership. I guess you have to drop the front clip, or have a special tool to get at them. What a pain.
Keep up the great content. Stay Happy and Healthy
I know I don't usually comment, but I gotta say thanks for showing your whole process. I think this type of diagnosis might help a few more folks get into fixing things. The world needs more Macgyver action to survive. Especially these days.
I can't believe you haven't broke a million subs yet Alex.....you and Peter are awesome keep up the good work !!
This is what im looking for on CarCZcams! just casual working on cars, using older parts not everything brand new just becuse. Well done boys! greeting from sweden
Been watching your channel for a year now, and i gotta say you are my favourite car channel! Much love from Australia!
I love this content tbh and the LT1 is such an unloved engine due to optispark. Maybe you could try one of those Opti Deletes that lets you run LS style coil on plugs and a modern ecu for tuning? I think that alone and a wideband would give you plenty of headroom to build an awesome streetcar! as always enjoying the vids!
I have that opti delete coilpack system on my 383 stroker LT1 and it works great....it runs on LS7 coilpacks.
Just an FYI, the opti-spark units on these early LT-1s are not vented so avoid pressure washing the front of the motor. Contrary to GM/Chevrolet, you do not have to completely remove the harmonic balancer to replace it. Also the EGR tubes are prone to leaking after a while and have to be replaced. Enjoy the awesome find!!
Cant wait to see this thing fully detailed

I built an injector test stand. Could only do one at a time, but it worked.
Amazing how good a 97 Accord can run with 4 injectors with basically no spray pattern or consistency.
Appreciate your and your teams incredible work and dedication. Inspired me to tackle some projects that have been on the back burner on this side of the pond for some time…
Alex, I've been with you since nearly the beginning of your channel. Your channel has only gotten better in time. Please don't change! The nitty gritty of your projects is exactly what we love!
Love seeing an old car being brought back to life! Great content! Keep it up! 💯
As an aircraft mechanic, that plastic stuff wrapped around the plug wire is "spiwrap" and we mostly use it to protect wires from chafing against metal parts in the planes. I don't believe I have seen that stuff placed in such a hot environment and even though all of our stuff is burn tested and has to be essentially resistant to fire doesn not mean it cannot melt. If it was PTFE spiwrap it should be rated for around 500 degrees fahrenheit and thats still not going to handle exhaust header temperatures. Not sure how much heat those sleeves actually mitigate but obviously didnt help keep the spiwrap alive haha.
Love how this channel completes projects and doesn't leave us hanging. Best automotive channel on CZcams!

Those pistons look very similar to the stock pistons in my 95, minus the center circle... so likely a rebuilt but factory bottom end.
The corrugated stuff that you guys were talking about is called spiral wrap it is for movement and vibration for wires typically used on moving parts for machinery.
That piston talking back 'I don't know you have to google me' had me in knots 🤣🤣🤣
It’s called Spiroband. Electricians use it to hold bundles of wires together.
Don’t need it for one cable
We very lightly coat the outside layer of the fuel injector o ring when installing rails on them, may help with preventing leaks
