Turning my bedroom into a sanctuary! Decluttering to (almost) minimalism! Plus a bonus book purge!

  • This has been the most satisfying decluttering session thus far for me. I've always wanted my bedroom to be a calming, tranquil, escape room from the chaos everywhere else and now I finally have it. Since the clothing was already decluttered and minimized by half, the rest of this room didn't really take very long, despite it being filled to the brim with things that didn't even belong in there. Once I emptied it of the things that should be living in other rooms, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and was able to really let go of much more than I expected. But don't come for me about the books! I'm surprised I was able to declutter any books at all and consider this a great success! 😆
    Thanks for watching! Let me know what you thought in the comments below, and don't forget to subscribe and turn on the notifications bell so you don't miss the next video!

    The smile on your face at the end brought me joy! I'm so happy for you. It was especially validating hearing you say reading is your hobby - I'm stuck in this mode of feeling I have to be productive and I've lost my joy of reading. Thank you!

    • @DormanFamilyCircus
      @DormanFamilyCircus  Před 3 měsíci +3

      That mindset of productivity is why my books backed up in the first place. I’ve finally gotten to a place where I realized I’m actually more productive if I take time to do things that make me happy. I’m in a better headspace when it’s time to work. Grab a trashy romance novel and bring some joy back to your life!

    I'm really exciting that you're doing more decluttering /organizing content. Believe it or not I think that most of the house in today's world with children are over cluttered and disorganized and people are overwhelmed everywhere. Unfortunately most of the content that we see on CZcams right now our from people who have already done their homes and are telling you how to do it. Your channel and content is really needed right now. We need to see the process and it gives us motivation to work on ours

    I just binge watched all of the bedroom declutter videos. What a transformation! Great work. I found that laundry is so much easier with less clothes too! I’ve also gotten rid of most of my decor items for the same reason as you, to simplify cleaning and making things look more streamlined. And it’s true, the decluttering is addicting. The room looks so good🎉 Tbh, as a person who owns 250+ unread books and about as many read faves, this doesn't look bad at all! Maybe when your house is decluttered, you will have space for a bookshelf these books can go on and keep about 10 books you are most exited about in your nightstand that you can see easily. It could also help you to read more. My appartment is pretty much minimalist, but I allow myself to keep as many books as I want because they are my passion and they have designated bookshelves. That said, if I loose interest in reading a book or I read it and don't love it, it goes!

    My mom taught me to love reading. I consider that a great gift that’s enriched my life forever. I inherited her Library of Mystery books & DVD’s. She loved Romantic Comedy and Musicals and Suspense movies of the 1940’s , 50’s 60’s. I donated some to an Assisted Living place but kept a lot. I added my music collection and now have my own Sanctuary. Blake has his music lounge ( very cool) and You deserve a reading nook. If that’s your bed - fine! We all need self care and nourishment. Once you are done with decluttering you can start an on line book club for your kids and others. That’d be fun!

    I bought matching table runners for our night stands,mine are in good shape but they are dark wood and I’m too lazy to dust that often so they buy me some time.🤭(mine are a similar width to yours so the runners fit well or you could just get some washable fabric that coordinates with your bedding and cut them to fit.) My husband also has a CPAP machine on his side of the bed so he drilled a hole (with a keyhole saw big enough for the plug end to go through) in the back of the cabinet on the right side. We put the machine inside the cabinet and put the plug through the back and plugged it in the wall. At night,he just leaves the door open,pulls out the hose and then puts it away in the morning.( there is plenty of air space to run it all night with the door open. I don’t have to pretend that it’s decorative,😂🤣😅 and it may actually be a little more sanitary having it put away during the day?) Oh,and I also taped pretty paper on the inside of the glass doors because besides the CPAP machine,nothing else I store in either one is attractive enough to look at.😵‍💫🤭

    I love seeing this room take shape! Now that the picture frames are gone from between the two dressers, could you move the pole lamp that's currently next to the rowing machine into that spot? That way you could slide the rowing machine to the right and the door might open freely. Then, once the rowing machine is under the bed, you could put a laundry hamper there. I was also going to suggest placing the mirror on top of the long dresser, and I don't think you would even need to attach it to the wall if you put artist putty along the bottom edge of the frame so that it can't slide forward.

    • @RadCenter
      @RadCenter Před 3 měsíci +2

      PS when you get to creating your paint-by-number gallery, you can make it easier by cutting pieces of newspaper in the sizes of the artwork and taping them to the wall with masking tape. That way you can play around with different positions without moving picture hangers. Command hooks would work great for that and won't damage the walls.

My brain wasn't thinking of adding a specific list for each room on what must be fixed or buying something more useful then what I have. I sometimes thought of it but would then forget. Making a master list for each room makes the most sense doesn't matter how long it takes because depends on your money flow on what is priority. Just making a plan is less stressful. I find too the more I can let go the easier it gets to get rid of more because life gets easier & as I get older I don't want to be dealing with this crap & my daughter isn't going to want most of my stuff lol

    Hello! I'm new here. I love books too! I also donate those I've read and have unread books in 3 rooms of my house. Yay books! They bring me so much joy and then I pass on the joy to others. Happy reading to you! 😊🐦

      As long as you're reading them I don't think it's out of hand. In the past when I've felt overwhelmed by too many books waiting for me to read them, I would go through them and donate the ones that didn't seem as interesting to me. I'd send them out into the world to be enjoyed by others, content that I still have plenty here to enjoy myself.

    Hi, Jamie! I came across your channel just yesterday and am watching your decluttering videos since then. I NEVER experienced a household as relatable as yours! I struggle with clutter and know *the piles* so well! Thank you so so much for sharing your decluttering journey!! It IS a huge motivation for me! I'm not a collector per se, but I (we) have a problem with hobby-supplies and very few accessable storage... 🙃Also hi to Maxwell and Penny from our two furbabies ❤ lot's of love from Germany🤗

    My first time watching your channel. Like it, very realistic. I have way too many "action items" in my place. And since I don't have a helper here, they sit for too long. Working on getting rid of many items - selling hopefully- since not a lot of room in my singlewide manufactured home. My home downsized but I am still working on it.

    I love reading as well. I used to belong to a book club although my books of choice were historical stuff. It started to get expensive. When I started decluttering a few years ago, at one point I switched to getting my books from the library. Free, and if I don't like them, I don't feel like I wasted money and there is less clutter. If I really like a book or if I find that I am checking out the same book over and over, I find a copy on Ebay for cheap. I love my books and am a constant re-reader (is that a word?). Love your channel!

    • @DormanFamilyCircus
      @DormanFamilyCircus  Před 3 měsíci

      I definitely want to utilize our library more. We have an exceptional one and I want my kids to get familiar with it, too. My biggest problem with reading before I joined the book club was figuring out what to read. I was always looking for book recommendations but I don’t read a lot of the genres that my family & friends do. That is why I love that we get 5-7 books to pick from each month and is what drew me to the book club in the first place. It’s cheap, too, at least compared to buying other hardbacks brand new from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, etc. but I definitely don’t need to be getting more than 1 per month from now on 😅 ebooks and a kindle might be an answer too. I know so many people love their kindles but I’m just such a purist for a real tactile book! But when my boys were infants I used to read books on my phone while nursing, etc, because I didn’t want to drop a big hardback on them 😂

    Why physical books though, why not electronic for the Book of the Month? I truly understand your attachment to physical books as I own what’s classed as a library due to volume, but moved over to electronic several years ago .... hundreds of books on one very light device (then I don’t feel guilty about keeping the physical ones I already have as I’m not adding to the amount - I have problems just throwing books away and the charity shops don’t want paperback which are 50+ years old, so the electronic formats were my decluttering salvation

    Suggestion for the large mirror, pull the dresser a couple of inches from the wall and you can prop the mirror slanted onto the dresser without mounting for now. You can add small rubber clear dots to the edge of the mirror so it doesn't slide at all. I've done this myself and it works.

    Hi… idea for your mirror. Take picture down over the dresser. Get some drawer liner that is rubber with lots of little holes. Place mirror onto dresser and use small pieces of drawer liner under mirror. Will not slide and you won’t have to worry about trying to hang that heavy piece. I did this with my mirror and it works great

    Vertical Bookcases are really good for storage. If funds allow, how about a vertical bookshelf in the closet and fold up tees, socks, underwear, etc in the side tables? An organizer inside the side table drawers (small boxes will do, items around the house, mushroom containers works too).

    It seems like you would really benefit with replacing your bedside cabinets with some small bookshelves, would probably be cheaper too! Ikea have some really nice underbed storage options. I agree too much stuffed under the bed is stressful and makes it difficult to clean but having a couple of proper storage items that can easily be moved is tolerable :)

    A couple of comments: 1) Put a piece of paper with whatever design or color you want inside the glass of your bedside tables. You can find great patterns by the individual sheet at places like Michaels, Joann, or Hobby Lobby. That'll help a lot with visual clutter. 2) We have huge book collections. Will we read them again? No. Plus a lot of things just go cyclicly--our youngest child is 25 and none of the kids want to read their books again, nor are they interested in moving them out to their own places. If it is a book that is dear to them I will save it FOR NOW and I'll save books that have meaning to me but it also helps to know that there will always be MORE books that haven't even been written yet that I will want to read. There does come a time when you just get sick of dealing with everybody's everything. Right now I am trying to trade in/sell a lot of our books (taking the payment option rather than just taking credit for more books!), and anything they don't buy I donate to the library or to Goodwill type places for their book sales and for a tax break for me. I have always kept all kinds of unfinished projects and I have a lot of things from family (like full china services for each kid and none of them even want them etc) and it really gets to feel oppressive as you get older (I am 66 now--had kids late.) I have a lot more to say but I'll spare you. P.S. Your dresser and bureau (if that is what it is called) are beautiful vintage pieces! Nice. Like your honesty.

I find it difficult to want to declutter alongside other channels when the ramped up music feels like I need to be at a Rave.😂side note- instead of replacing end tables, have you ever thought of buying some cool contact paper and covering the top of them? What if you get a bookshelf that is the same color and the mirror fits on it and put door hangers and a nob on the mirror and make it a door for the bookshelf so it's something you use and the mirror is off the floor and can't be knocked over and can still be used to just a idea for you
