The famous story of the seasons, Persephone and Hades. A romantic kidnapping that ended up creating a situation where Persephone has to spend half of her time in the world above and half of her time in the world below. This story may be one of the most retold and reinterpreted myths for a long time, from Hadestown to Lore Olympus. And as a bonus, hey this is also where sirens first show up, though they're much more aerial and less aquatic from their usual representation.

In the most ancient version she just wandered to hell by herself because her mother is a control freak . She just happened to like hades who was also in the underworld .
In her oldest version she was a queen of the underworld without the myth .
By modern standards yes. In ancient Greek standards no. From what I remember from my ancient Greek history class for a marriage to be ok the prospective husband had to get permission from both parents of the to be bride. This fell out of practice after Christianity took hold.
@@stormbringer2840 Afaik it predates Ovid, and the version of her just wandering into the underworld is pretty modern... @@Unknownfrencghost yup, no snow in the Medditeran.
This; it was translators in Northern Europe who changed it to winter. Summers in the Mediterranean (and California) are hot and dry with yellow grass, whereas in winter the hills and fields turn as green as Ireland. Gonna have to add that there are several versions of this myth and Demeter is an over controlling monster in nearly all of them.

The “Persephone went willingly” interpretation of the myth is actually just a modern retelling, but it’s one that I and a lot of others enjoy. It gives Persephone agency, it makes for a more interesting story and dynamic between the couple than the original versions of the myth, which only really served to make sense of the seasons (and there’s nothing wrong with that, but modern fiction thrives on character driven stories), and it’s adorable. Basically, it was changed to suit a modern audience, but that change is a welcome and cute one.
it's also more tonally consistent and has fewer plotholes given Persephone literally translates to: "Bring of Destruction",

Huh. That's a very interesting parallel.
I wonder which others exist when comparing Grimm stories and Greek Myths
Actually Eros & Psyche are a closer comparison.
They are both allegories for arranged marriage, the fear and antagonism a young woman might feel for a man her father picked out for her, and the possibility that, if she gives him a fair chance, they might actually realise they like each other and form a caring partnership of equals, so it's not a surprise they have so many similarities.
I'd say they're certainly related: the 'monstrous-but-actually-lovable husband' tale is probably the oldest still told, and long predated Hellenic Greece. This one doubles as a seasonal myth too, so bonus points!
Probably as Beauty and the Beast is actually a more modern tale written in 1740. The author would have probably known Greek mythology.
Despite how he's portrayed in media, Hades is actually one of the most kind and most caring member of the Greek pantheon.

That version was created in 1925
@@Brian-tn4cd I mean the original Persephone was already a goddess of the underworld
You know, I have yet to read a version of this myth that actually explicitly shows Persephone being unhappy with this arrangement. That said, other myths depict them as a pretty well functioning relationship, so the less gross interpretation (to me) is Persephone not actually minding her situation (or it even being a step up in status).
There are actually no myths that depict the relationship of Hades and Persephone (as in, in terms of how they feel about each other)

Glad to get the background for this. I've been reading Lore Olympus, which gets it's inspiration from this myth. Like people said, it's more wholesome than you would expect.
This is also the less wholesome, younger version. The version where Persephone is a willing participant due to a controlling mother is in fact older.

It's crazy that Demeter and Dionysus both have power over the earth but in the Mycenaean myths, Dionysus was a god of the grape vine 🍇 and Demeter was the corn mother 🌽 so they were both equals in a sense
Dionysus has an incredibly convoluted history, and has been the god of many things
Hecate is also the goddess of crossroads, and in some of the legends she approved of the match between Persephone and Hades (or maybe just wanted to tweak the nose of her fellow goddess Demeter) and so gave her the royal runaround. Jim Butcher references this in his Harry Dresden series how Hades tells harry that the reason Demeter was so pissed was she was suffering from Empty Nest Syndrome and that Hecate's wedding present was a Honeymoon free from his Mother-in-law.
Harry: "The stories don't seem to record it that way. I seem to recall Hecate leading Demeter in search of Persephone."

That yeah is just Glorius.
sometimes it is said that it's more of a 1 sided relationship. others say they are both cool with it.
@USCAN14 Roman creation by Strabo. Does not count as a classic Greek myth.
"so scheme it was " that cracks me up jajajajja
Thanks for making this video! 😸
I like the version where Persephone is a badass who liked ruling the underworld as well as loved hades. This is laaaaame
Yeah, this is probably the worst reteling of Persephone's story I've heard so far.
Thank you for making this video
May have had an... unorthodox start, but this is a much healthier couple than anything going on with Zeus.
Or posidon
It's weird how the Greeks have two main Gods who commits adultery, and does such horrible acts to the human, yet Hades is the chill guy in the trio.
Can you guys make episodes about the oydessey
Imagine getting advise from dionysus😂😂
AAHHHH yes! I just learnt this for classics GCSE but I’m interested to recap and because often the different versions are quite interesting
This myth is one where I have heard different variants. Some Persephone willingly stays after being kidnapped, some she likes him after she stays a bit, heck I have even seen a version where she actually went to the underworld willingly, but her mother claimed she was kidnapped. This can chocked up to “there is no written version so it’s a huge game of telephone”, but it is still interesting to look at “What are the most common elements” rather than the fine details of a myth.
There are several written versions. These are the Greeks, not the Celts.
I like the other version where it's more of mutual love.
There's a siren in the last scene on a tree 7:17
Parts are different depending on where the story is told. Some parts of Greece had it where she wanted to be with him and eating the seeds was the only way for them to be able to be together.
This is some nice background info after just having played Hades
Mithridates the Great would make a great history series.
So its Demeter's rage that caused the global pandemic. PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE HER DAUGHTER BACK!
Make episodes longer please they are so enjoyable
I can't wait for Extra Astronomy!
YES!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO MY WHOLE LIFE!!!
