This is where Ceausescu made a terrifying decision in July 1977 |

In this episode, we visit a place of great significance in the history of Romania: the Omnia Hall. Designed in 1967 by architect Cezar Lăzărescu as an annex to the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, the Omnia Hall was also linked to a terrifying order issued by Nicolae Ceaușescu in the summer of 1977, when he suspended consolidation work on the buildings affected by the cataclysm in the spring of that year. The decision had tragic consequences, with many vulnerable buildings collapsing in the following months.
The only one who dared to criticize the dictator's decision was engineer Gheorghe Ursu. With extensive experience in resistance works, Ursu had been appointed head of the ARO building consolidation project, so he knew what Pandora's box Ceaușescu was preparing to open. Trying to create some interantional pressure on the dictator to resume consolidation, Gheorghe Ursu sent a letter to Radio Free Europe. The letter was read live in 1979, two years after the earthquake. This was followed by the engineer's arrest in 1985 and his beating to death at the orders of the Securitate.

Si multumesc ca ne-ai adus la cunostiinta ca exista un centru national al dansului, entitate ce a primit o sala extraordinara in mijlocul bucurestiului....macar nu a luat-o cineva pe un proces de retrocedare.
