- These are the best FREE orchestral VSTs. The VST romplers (real instrument samplers) in this list are the best free realistic instrument plugins for making music. In this top 5, you'll find a realistic guitar VST, a realistic piano VST, a strings plugin, a realistic choir VST, and (in my opinion) the best free orchestral plugin. There are examples of how each one sounds in a small composition, as well as a bit about the features included in some of them. If you want to make good music for free, stick around until the end of the video and try out what you find in the video! Take care.
* Please note that there are even better plugins out in 2020, so be sure to check out part 2 below and Layers by Orchestral Tools.

The last one sounded really good. Reminded me a bit of mario galaxy believe it or not
Hey, thanks for watching! I really did like the last one as well!
Great showcase! I'm downloading Keyzone and VSCO2 right now.
Hey, thank you! I hope you enjoy them, I really like the electric piano preset on KEYZONE and the piano on VSCO2 is actually pretty good too!
You missed Spitfire LABS which is an infinite series of free instruments.

Could anyone recommend some good laptops that I can run some VST's on that aren't too expensive?
@@Travv.Official u can use almost any laptop once its decent. By decent i mean, 4gb ram, 500gb storage, Intel I3 or AMD A6........
Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you so much. I've been searching for free plug-ins like these and you summarised them into one video greatly. No clickbait and straight to the point, exactly what I like.
Not everyone has the money to spend on high quality instrument plug-ins, and so I really appreciate the effort you put into finding these. Thanks again, bro. You the man.
I really appreciate you taking the time to give me this kind of feedback, it means a lot to me.
I'm glad I could help you and respect your time with my videos - that's why I keep it short and direct.
Thanks for watching!
Auran Des, I need a high quality trumpet instrument. Im not a techy person and don't understand the terminology plug ins. So things have to be really simple without hundreds of knobs to press. Im 80 years now so its a bit late to learn. Just a simple straight forward instrument- a Trumpet, to my computer is all i need to play a little short tune my hubby made before he passed away, I can just about use audacity which took me almost forever to learn and so can use it to record his song. Any chance you can advise.
That guitar vst sounds really clean. You are right saying that you were surprised by it being FREE.
Yeah, they put a lot of attention to detail in their plugins, great stuff! Thanks for watching, I hope you liked the rest.
@@TransverseAudio Thanks.
As soon as you showed the strum feature, I salivated.
Trying to get a realistic sounding strum in a midi sequence takes absolutely forever, so this substitute is exceptional!
Download link seems to be dead...it just says Please check back soon to see if the site is available.
Ample Guitar has a real nice sound. Awesome strumming too! Thanks for the tip. =)
Happy to help, thanks for watching!
doesn't sound real to me tbh
The make a bass that's also good, if not better.
the strummer part of the ample guitar cuts out the 2nd chord. Is it because its the lite version, or is my version just bugged or something?
It is a great plugin but it eats a lot of cpu.

It's sound like Minecraft cursed images.

Well, I'm super late, but I hope you enjoyed my demo of it there.
I've been teaching a small group some basic DAW arranging and one kid has been crying out for free orchestral VSTs. This is a real life saver for me.
Thanks so much :)
This is amazing! I'm so glad to have helped you in some way teach others about music. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Yeah, I really enjoyed that plugin. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much. Your video has been a big help as I face scoring issues on the cheap.
The choir sounds nice and it reminds me of those retro choir stuff you hear.
Yeah, it's not as bad as people say. I like to add a bunch of reverb to a choir and use it like a pad of some kind for ambiance. Thanks for watching, I hope you liked the other ones.
I thought it sounded quite bad :D :O
VSC02 is insanely large, and totally worth the download and drive space. Great video. All of these are amazing. I hadn't heard of that Keystone plug. Thanks for the info! These are each so great, people, you won't believe they are freebies!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the plugins! Yeah, VSCO2 is really good, I love it.
This is something that I was looking a few time ago, definitely worth it, thanks for your help!
You're welcome! Thanks for checking it out, I hope you enjoy using the plugins.
Straight to the point, love it!
Thanks, glad you did!
I have recently been working on a "grand" orchestral soundtrack for the main theme of a game, and I was slowly losing hope because my live-playing skills aren't that great, but besides the strings preset on my piano I didn't have any other high-quality orchestral sound available. Then I stumbled upon this amazing video! VSCO2 saved the day.
Hey, that's pretty cool. It's always nice to find motivation again, especially after struggling to find creative direction. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Your welcome, thanks for watching and letting me know you enjoyed!
but some of the DSK plugins have only a .dll file inside the zip folder, they arent working ableton tells me the vst plugin could not be found... Could you suggest why thats happening
?
You might need to move them to a specific folder that Ableton scans for plugins. I would go into the options and see where it looks for VSTs and move the .dll there. (The DSK instruments don't work on mac as far as I know.)

@@SerazadNey Are you talking about a chord builder like CaptainChords?
Really nice orchestra sound!
Yeah, they sound good. Check out Spitfire LABS and BBC Symphonic Orchestra. They are another level
nice review ;) thanks for your support!
Thank you too. And thank you for all of the free plugins!
Also to check out: Sonatina orchestra, a bit stiff, but can be just what you need sometimes.
And I highly recommend people install Sforzando, there are some sweet libraries for it, like SCC Expressive strings, it's basically Kontakt for broke people :D
I actually put both Sonatina and Sforzando in my part 2 of this one!
@@TransverseAudio will check!
Hey, another one I recommended is bbc orchestra discover, it sounds insanely good for it being free(even better than dsk overture), and I use it all the time, has woodwinds, string, brass, and a ton of percussion.
thanks for the recommendation
I really needed this! great work!

How on earth do you use Spitfire in a DAW?
Is it possible to recreate an entire orchestra based on free plugins/libraries? Would love to hear such an attempt. Free or not it'd be hard already with all the tweaks for realism!
Oh absolutely! There are a bunch of great songs made with Sonatina Orchestra and VSCO2. Not to mention there is now BBC Orchestra by Spitfire and Layers by Orchestral Tools which are both incredibly real.
Yesterday I downloaded the guitar and piano. Great tools, lots of thanks! 😀
Happy to share, thanks for watching!
Thank you man for sharing this stuff

Halo juga untuk Anda! Terima kasih banyak, maaf sudah terlambat!
*DSK plugins are still my personal regard as the best free orchestral (and all-round) instrument.*
They've never let me down, and were where I first started with orchestral music.
DSK makes some really good stuff. I should have put more effort into their demos as I think I could have added some more now that I look back. I hope you liked the video and found it helpful regardless, thanks for watching!
Would it work with presonus?
DSK saxophone is quiet good, also their Brass, but DSK Brass can only run on win32
As long as you're on windows the DSK plugins will work at 32-bit. If you're DAW only supports 64-bit, you can use a bridge (software that allows you to use 32-bit in 64-bit and vice versa). The DAW will also have to support VST.
@@TransverseAudio This video is a good size, no worries. Their site has lots to play with. You gave them a good sized plug ;)
Thanks for the guide guys
Thanks for the kind word about VSCO2.
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
i'm not big on dsk vst's, coz they usually sound amateur, and take a lot of cpu..........
but, i love the choir one, coz i can make it sound 80's if i mess with the parameters.
Dsk can sound really neat if you set some parameters and fx.
DSK is cool but it also depends on your config abilities. I can produce really unique sounds thanks to their soundbank.
Yea
Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes you have to take that sacrifice if it's the only plugin for that instrument/sound though.
Yeah, it can with some subtle EQ and reverb.
nice
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!

Thank you man those pluggings really good
Add RDGAudio Free Piano also in the list.
Hey, thanks for mentioning this, I hope you enjoyed the rest!
4:25 How do you do that, control the same vst using multiple "samplers", I mean, you control different instruments with different samplers, how is that tecnique called? or how can I do the same thing? please help! D:
I instead had to open orchestra 5 different times so I can change the instrument and create 5 diferent piano rolls for each one.
Lol, that's actually what I did with that plugin! 😋 What you're seeing is "Ghost Notes" Which are there to help me understand where to place the notes in my current channel. It helps with keeping things sounding nice.
If you go to 2:47 you'll see that I'm controlling different instruments there from the same plugin using "MIDI channels" or "MIDI routing" (at least that's what I think it's called). What you do is change the note's MIDI channel number and match it to the same number that you assigned to the specific instrument you want to play. - It really saves on CPU if the plugin has that feature, but a lot of them actually don't unfortunately.
it's called real musician BOY
You have no idea how much I've been looking for a video like this haha
Great to hear, thank you for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. What is your favorite plugin from the video?
`Transverse Audio Definitely the VSCO2. When I heard the 'stick to the end of the video' bit I thought it was just the classic catchphrase, but damn. For a free plugin that was insanely good!!
Lol, that's hilarious, I didn't realize it was that cheesy. I did put a bit more effort into that last one as it was really impressive to me too.
Nice! I can't believe that guitar plug is free! Thanks! 🙂
check out Sonatina Choir, it's way better than DSK
anything is better i mean its a good start at best
Just got around to getting it now, It's pretty good!
I think Sonatina Choir needs the full version of Kontakt (around USD 400), am I right?
@@andresgiuffre6810 no no, it does not, I Use it and it comes with it's own standalone interface
@@ParaEquinox I am completely in love with Vocalisa, the Slavic women choir. Man, I need that plugin!!, but it requires full Kontakt version :'(

You've made a great and very informative video. The instruments you've demonstrated are excellent for someone starting out and even more experienced musicians looking for different sounds and samples to use. A great collection. I have some of the paid versions you mention and love them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Awesome list of plugins! Been looking for some free stuff that doesn't sound horrible! Thanks, man! Great video too! Liked and subscribed!
Thank you for showing your support! I'm happy that you liked that video and the plugins I showcased.
Anyone know a good upright piano? I don't care if it's paid or free. There are thousands of grand pianos but I've still yet to hear a decent upright. I even got Keyscape hoping it's upright would be amazing but it's a little off still because they used a very specific type. I tried EZKeys too which is as close as I've got to a nice upright but still something is missing. So any suggestions?
Hey, thanks for asking! There is a free one called 4front piano that you might be interested in. I'm not sure if it's the exact style you're looking for, but hey, let me know how it goes for you! Thanks for watching.
I've been happy with the XLN Audio Addictive Keys upright (free demo available, full license not normally free but I got it bundled with a Focusrite interface). I'd tried many free ones but XLN's is far more realistic and provides a range of mic positions including stereo playing position... on headphones it sounds like what you'd hear sitting at the keyboard. I can't vouch for XLN's other keyboard products but I use and enjoy Additive Drums quite a bit.
Wayne Robinson their mark one is killer
The best Upright Piano I've heard is from a Nord Stage 3, but for that price you could just buy an upright piano lol. Kontakt has a standard upright piano which comes standard and sounds nice. I always prefer the sound of the Upright, it sounds more wholesome.
`Transverse Audio Thanks for the recommendations everyone. (4front is great for free but sounds like it only has 1 sample per key?) The sound I'm looking for is basically the sound of a Yamaha upright. Similar sound wise to what Thom Yorke uses in Videotape and Suspirium.
A soft sound. The "problem" (and it's bad that I call this a problem) with a lot of libraries is that they sample the best pianos in the world and sometimes they just sound too perfect. I don't want out of tune or "bad" but I don't want Hollywood level quality for a quiet song or for a little playing around at home. I'd happily buy a real upright if I had the space. I'm moving soon so who knows.
Anyway I'll check out all the recommendations, if there are any more keep them coming! So far Addictive Keys and Nord Stage 3 are the best sounding, especially Nord. The Addictive Keys one is a little bright but could probably be fixed with EQ. Looks like I'll be buying either one of those.
3:48 I feel like I just leveled up in all my attributes....
Ahaha, are you talking about my composition?

FL studio.
The DAW I used in this video to host all of the plugins is called FL Studio 20. It works on both Mac and PC, I was using it on Windows 10.
I thought Fl studio works only with a Mac. I've being using other DAWS tho.
Hey, FL Studio had actually only been "officially" for windows (with some ability to run it on mac). In version 20, it's now officially supported on Mac and apparently runs well!
Interesting, as there has been a linux version out for years. I tried playing with it, but it's not really my style of recorder. I tend to do all my recording in Ardour, which is also free and capable as all get out.
