Catatumbo Lightning - The Neverending Storm (A Short Film by Jonas Piontek)

  • The Catatumbo Lightning in Venezuela has captured me from the first moment I set foot in Ologa, the fishing village in the heart of Lake Maracaibo. What locals call the "Relampago de Catatumbo" is also known as the everlasting storm, raging on in up to 300 nights every year with intensities reaching multiple flashes every second at a time. Just 15 kilometers NW of the camp lies the one point on earth with the most lightning strikes, here up to 250/km2 are registered every year. The Catatumbo Lighting is not just a Guinness World Record holder but also has been immortalized in the flag of Zulia, where people proudly call it the "Maracaibo Lighthouse" after saving Maracaibo on multiple occasions from nighttime ambushes of foreign naval fleets. But Catatumbo is much more than just lightning, it's an overall crazy place filled with amazing people, incredible wildlife, beautiful flora and unbelievable light scenes on an almost daily base. All these things coming together have made me fall in love with this place and after visiting 3 times I feel a deep connection to the Maracaibo Lake - It has become my second home. A ferocious and unforgiving home but the best home I could possibly imagine. This film shows the highlights of those three trips, all in a very cinematic fashion. Some of the lightning videos are indeed the real time, but many others are slightly shortened in order to look the most impressive, but everything you see in here did actually happen and wasn't altered using any After Effects etc.

    I come to watch this video whenever the BS of social media gets me angry. This video, sorry, masterpiece is a reminder that the internet can be a good place. The cinematography is outstanding, well done to all involved. However, the star of the show, and I hate the word awesome because the English language can be used so much better, the star of the show is the absolute awesomeness of nature. Phenomenal content.

    This is Tammie Parrish Miller commenting. I was taught by my mother to love storms for as long as I can remember. The thunder and lightning are something to behold. I love the rain as well. I recently rescued a dog who did not like it at all when the thunder would begin. Finally, he has become still when it storms. I taught him with the sound of my voice that it was comforting if that makes sense. I also love the sound of frogs! This entire video is incredible. How wonderful to have access to this place! Thanks for sharing it with us!

    This is actually really cool. I like how it incorporated the storms, but you also get to see the communities and the landscape when it's not storming because they are really never broadcasted about.

      LovelyHick The point of this video is to show the full experience revolving around the Catatumbo Lightning and not just constant flashing for 20 minutes. For lightning only I have already released a couple of videos here actually, they are shorter but focus on lightning & storm clouds only ✌🏼

    • @outspoken9922
      @outspoken9922 Před 5 lety +4

       gewitterjagd The problem is you failed to deliver the full experience. Hear me out. I was disappointed because you put this overlay of music on it. The storm didn't produce that music so why on Earth did you add it? Nobody wants to hear added music. I personally came to the video expecting to hear just the sound of the storm. You for some odd reason added music on top of something that likely sounded amazing in person. When you recorded this and experienced it yourself, was that music you added playing? NO! But you claim you wanted to "show the full experience". Smh. You essentially robbed the viewers of a real experience when you did all your edits and added music that was not originally the sound of the storm. None of us can appreciate and experience it in the way that you did because you added music and did not allow us to fully hear the thunder and crackling sounds of the storm throughout the video. I absolutely love storms and this video was terrible and a waste of my time. I would have loved to be able to hear its sound without your edits to it. I don't know what parts are the natural sound and which parts are the music you added. Next time, just do a live video and kill all the dramatic effects you added as it takes away from the experience of the storm. You destroyed the masterpiece of this storm when you added sh*t to it. So nobody should be the least surprised that this video got a thumbs down and didn't even go viral. The storm was supposed to the focal point and you just ruined it with all your edits. I'm off to find another channel that gives the viewers and us storm lovers a real unedited experience. Next time, do better and leave out your edits.

    Sehr beeindruckende und tolle Arbeit Jonas! Das ist ein Ort, den man als Sturmjäger mal gesehen haben sollte. Vielleicht schaffe ich es auch irgendwann mal dorthin

    What an amazing phenomenon of a place. Now on my bucket list to visit some day.
    By the way, according to Wikipedia Francis Drake was writing about the burning of ships, not lightning. But there are other historical references to it that still suggest it has been going on for a long time, and most likely due to it's geographical weather patterns. That means it may have been going on for potentially thousands of years, or millions, if not more.
