    🌟 About this video:
    So what prompted this video? Well it was a conversation with Maddie (aka @VeganPerfumeGirl the name say it all, please go check her out on Instagram!) and Jon Snow (@ScentedSnowdrops who also has a channel here on CZcams that I watch a LOT: / @scentedsnowdrops ).
    Maddie was looking to pick a few more perfumes and she asked about what bottle size people normally buy... and that got me thinking about the psychology surrounding perfume bottle size choice and around perfume retailing more generally. So I am dedicating this video to Maddie and saying again huge congratulations on the birth of her daughter Stevie. 🥰
    Perfume houses, perfume vendors and even CZcams, drive you to buy more and more perfumes. It's a thing right? But exactly how do they do that? What psychology is at play here? Are there themes?
    So here I discuss 9 psychological effects that perfume houses and retailers use to get you hooked to buy more perfumes and in bigger bottles and yes, there are graphs... cos why not? These tricks are somewhat applicable over all non essential products and whilst some are immediately obvious, others are less so. Either way, I've tried to give perfume specific examples.
    I've stayed away from some huge marketing tricks here, such as how brands try to sell you an ideal / fantasy lifestyle because that could probably be a whole other video... 😲
    As you may know, I'm not a psychologist and I learnt about these things a few years ago watching another channel that is sadly not making videos any longer. It was the channel that first made me hit subscribe on CZcams: Tarable Decisions I've literally watched every video Tara ever made for that channel... now Tara does perfume and is amazing there too, please check her out, ‪@Olfactofiles‬ So what I'm saying is, if you want more in depth info on the psychology behind there effects, please go watch the psychology of shopping videos on Tarable Decisions, because Tara teaches psychology and knows much more than me.

    The packaging point is so true, brands always make the bigger bottles look so much better - perfume is definitely one of those items that people are drawn to aesthetically as much as for the scent. Personally I am a sucker for the free travel size offer. Great video Claire!

    I fell for the price per ml trap and stocked up on 100 and 150 ml bottles from the jump.
    I also felt like the luckiest man because my 100ml bottle of men's DG light blue, born in Roma etc cost less than the 50ml bottles from the equivalent women's line😂
    «Sales» got me big time. I'd refuse to pay 200 for a great niche that I really loved but had no issues buying multiple random fragrances that were just ok that ended up costing way more than 200 when added up and I didn't even enjoy them that much, they were just fine.
    Luckily for me I got into fragrances before the recent major price increases I managed to scale back the collection and I ended up making some money. Now I only get fragrances i LOVE.
    Great video

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 2 měsíci

      Thank you ❤️ I'm happy that you enjoyed this!
      It's a difficult logic to get your head around with price per ml Vs overall cost and how much you'll ever use. I think people are often in denial a little bit, when their collections start to grow, with how much fragrance they actually use! At least I was! 😂 I definitely tended to go for the larger bottles.
      I absolutely agree with buying specifically what you are looking for rather than what's on deal, it's the way to a happy collection. You just end up spending more otherwise because you feel dissatisfied.
      And yes, fragrance pricing has gone up massively just in the few years I've been on YT. Even mainstream designer fragrances are now regularly over £120 for the largest size, and usually £60-70 for the smallest. I hope the price inflation settles down a bit now. Thanks for watching 🥰

    I think that choosing ,,faces" we love for perfume ads made miracles. Making up great stories behind the perfume and naming it to attract the public is something I also notice. Not to mention, beautiful bottles that at least some of us decide to buy for collectors reasons. There are so many ways they use to attract us and most of the time, we give in... not because we are not aware of all that, but because our olfactory sense is the one we use to please ourselves and by buying perfumes we feel that we are doing something beautiful for ourselves.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes I didn't really touch on any of that, but you are so on point, that is exactly it! Perfume is an extra that you don't need, it's a luxury that is relatively affordable and something you can use every day and enjoy. Perfume ads with a celeb that I love, for example, I can think of midnight poison with Eva Green, will drawn a lot of people in. The bottles are also beautiful and that is why I am not a good perfume collector and have them all out on display rather than shoved back in the boxes. Thankfully it's quite dark where they are stored though! Thanks for watching and for your comment, I may make another video and include some of these interesting points! 💕

    After a stint in superdrug working behind the fragrance counter, I could tell you the stories that created angst within me. I told my boss what I really thought and left.... I didn't want to be part of that toxic marketing. If I sold a bottle of fragrance over 100 compared to a stupid star buy of just 20 it wasn't good enough. 😒 the reason is because they buy all that in surplus and its somewhere sitting in storage. I will never return to retail again.
    Clarins was the same. . . When free gift was there, my eyes would roll......

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 2 lety

      I often wonder why they push the star buys so much. I guess cheaper is more likely to sell but I think I've bought maybe 4 fragrances from Superdrug and none of those were star buys, they are generally not anything most people would want! I bet Clarins was very pressured for sales, I can totally see that. I think customers respect honesty above everything and that is what will make them think yep, this person knows what they are talking about and will make them buy. 🥰

    as much as they want freebies to work for me, they don't... coz my budget is at either travel sizes or 30ml LOL
    but I am guilty of buying perfumes from sampling in stores... hahaha...
    youtube is a big tool, i agree.. it is ads for brands for the price of maybe free bottles... and the fomo on YT or Insta is BIG !
    the pricing for the standard 3 sizes is the same strategy for the S-M-L icecream analogy or the Decoy like you said... :D but again, thankfully, my budget allows me to purchase 30mls only XD but the fact is, something works for me coz i now have 150plus perfumes that i NEVER needed LMAO

All of them all the time :D You mentioning the trick with the sizing of the bottles made me think how suprised i was with Lancome Idole releasing 25ml, over here it was surprisingly cheap, and just like you mentioned the smaller sizes usually are a decoy but this time if i buy 2*25ml it was actually cheaper than the 50ml which i found ridiculous, knowing what you mentioned. Also on a side note while im on the subject of Idole - the bottle is so purse-friendly, thin and lightweight, never had a bottle like this one. This was so interesting to watch! I believe sometimes people "want" to pay more for a product - it is too cheap, we think it may smell cheap, may be shortlasting etc. If the price is high we look upon it as a luxurious product of a very good value - wonderful smell with great parameters. Personally I'm often tricked by this "last chance to buy" 😱.

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes I agree, having smelt a lot of expensive fragrances, some brands have really shocked me in their pricepoints... I quite often feel that certain brands are not worth what they charge to me. I agree that too cheap and people begin to doubt quality, although I think people just need to try everything and make up their minds independent of pricepoint in the first instance.
      With last chance to buy, discontinued fragrances are my weakness 😂 FOMO is very real here!

    Great video Claire, food for thought. I purchased Scandal a Paris but wasn't bothered by the legs akimbo so happily bought the 30ml 😂 However I am often a sucker for a 50ml bottle because it's better value per ml than the 30ml. I do like to carry my fragrance in my handbag though, so do find the 30ml bottles more convenient but resent paying through the nose for the convenience! You do have to have your wits about you to avoid the many marketing ploys.

      Aah, yes 30ml is a good size for handbags, hadn't thought of that. I really think perfume should be more similarly priced per ml and 30ml bottles should be cheaper, but when you look at the cost of perfume itself it can sadly cost less than the bottle, especially for designer fragrances 🤦‍♀️ the amount of money invested in making the scent itself is miniscule.

    So yes... I fall for all these ploys, and not just once 🤣. Its rare I actually get free samples with a purchase and sometimes it's the bigger more expensive ones and that seems tight. The more bottles I've got the more I don't mind the simpler looking smaller ones. And you're so right being enticed into buying bigger but we wud never use them. And oh yes I've been suckered into limited editions and that. The special limited bottles... I can't live without them... But there's part of me knows I'd want one.
    I think the sending back the bottle gig works in the UK because of the atrocious post, waiting till we're grey for it to turn up, then the hassle, stress and cost of sending it back.
    Other strategies... We all know this, the not offering easy ways to sample the bottle it's a blind buy you get stuck with and we know that's designer and huge niche brands and the ones that do the samples are stupidly priced....
    Also them brands where there's always a 30% 40% deal off them... People think they're gettin a bargain... Well no... If they do that and still make a whopping profit jsut how much are they ripping u off full price

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 2 lety +1

      Gosh where to start with that essay! ❤️ This clearly touched a nerve! 🤣
      I don't mind limited editions that are actually limited and are a different fragrance, that's fine! Just not a different one every month... 🙄 I actually love having stuff that is discontinued more than brand new stuff, it must be some kind of perfume sadism. 🤷‍♀️
      Sampling with designer fragrances just isn't a thing at all is it? Samples seem random, they just appear, you don't seek them and generally they are unobtainable through retail or are only available with sky high prices online through dodgy decanters. I totally understand why designer brands and large niche don't offer samples. It would hugely damage sales.
      Designer perfume sometimes feels like it is the fast fashion of the perfume world. There is a high discontinuation rate, quick cycles of new launches and only so much space on shelves. When stuff disappears from store, it's blind buy or never try... And that gets me quite a bit. 🤦‍♀️
      Oh yes, for sure I think over half of the price of perfumes in shops is going directly to the retailer, 30-40% is nothing... With niche, I've no idea, and it clearly going to vary with company size, but I would love to know because you know I am nosey. 😂

    • @scentedsnowdrops
      @scentedsnowdrops Před 2 lety +1

      @@dr.claire.perfume yes samples are a bizarre concept aren't they, they must exist from designers but retailers hoarde the like they are their own personal family heir looms. And yea I suspect if sampling was easier sales would fall off a cliff 😉 you know exactly what I'm saying... Blind buying benefits them massively but I think it will get to the point even for normos when they've had one too many buyers regret and they just drop the brand.
      And yea you're right this crazy something new all the time... Even big niche brands with half a dozen a year sometimes... I mean come on just calm down. Does this mean they have little faith in what they are chuking out?
      And I forget the endless flankers... Clearly their marketing team have literally no vocabulary or... Again they know the fragrance is so drab and empty it can't stand alone and will only sell if it has a famous name attached to it

    • @dr.claire.perfume
      @dr.claire.perfume  Před 2 lety +1

      @@scentedsnowdrops I do not think the general public could not be trusted with a "free for all" on designer samples though 🤣 I can't even imagine how many people would take each 🙄
      CZcams has had such a massive influence on fragrance sales and trends. I think brands like Kayali just wouldn't exist without CZcams... And really there is so much blind buying with brand like those because they aren't stocked in many places. People keep telling me boots has them... I never saw them anywhere!
      It seems that new is exciting and old is not, it's the same with everything isn't it? And probably niche houses have to continually excite their perfume obsessed clientele with new releases probably more so than designer houses. I would love to see a graph for purchasing with time for fragrances depending upon reception and target audience. I wonder what the minimum sale is before something designer gets pulled or what's the standard production volume?
      Mugler has been really guilty of hanging flankers that are not really flankers on original fragrance names. It becomes pointless when they have nothing to do with the original, but then I bet it is super tempting for the companies to do...

    I'm surprised Boots still manage to sell any fragrance in the UK as they disqualified themselves from a lot of these selling tactics. All their testers are now in locked cabinets which means hunting down whichever one staff member has the key. Then you're hard pressed to find a tester strip that isn't used already. At no point will they allow the customer to hold the bottle unless it's one of very few already out (the ones no one wants/been on sale for years). They look down their nose at you if you dare ask them to spray it on skin, one spritz, lock it back in cabinet and disappear again. That experience means even if I can eventually sample a fragrance with them I will walk away and source it elsewhere, unless it's a heavily discounted item. I had terrible attitude from one SA who didn't want to allow me a tester of a fragrance on the basis of 'not in stock'. I informed her that it was in stock in their store 10 minutes away and I wanted to see if it was worth my time walking to the next store. I had actually blind bought it on offer online and was there to collect my online order. I wanted to know whether I needed to return it unopened. 😂

      Yes I agree, they aren't friendly at all are they?! I hate having to ask to try stuff and I hate the pressure of people watching me. And yes snap with blind buying and collecting from store, it's best to try before you leave and it's disappointing that that isn't something they could help you to do. They are losing so much business to online retailers as they are generally pretty expensive too. I have seen people steal fragrance in Boots though so I understand them locking them away, but not the testers... 🤷‍♀️ Thanks for watching ❤️

  • @silverliningfragrance1434

    I usually try to "stick" to my rules:
    smell each perfume a few times and like each time before I buy
    If I love the perfume I try to find the place that sell it the cheapest / figure out what will be the size that is "worth" to me - or I get a 30 ml bottle.
    If it's a love than I'll go for the biggest bottle

    Price per ml is the worst for me. I always end up with a 80 or 100 ml bottle cause it's "better value" which it is but not when you don't need it to begin with!🤦‍♀️ I ALWAYS regret buying them. One scent can never hold my attention for more than a week or two. Novelty wears off and I'm on a lookout for a new one. Total waste of money.

      Yes, it's taken me a while to learn that one. But actually if you resell the ones that you aren't fussed about, the larger size can sometimes be the better choice. It depends on the price and the fragrance though. Thanks for watching ❤️

      I can imagine! I don't really understand how that can ever work and not be abused. 🤷‍♀️ It must be really hard for stores to implement workable policies on it.

      @@dr.claire.perfume in the USA, in 2022, the National Retail Federation estimated that consumers returned more than $816 billion worth of merchandise. The cost of this to companies, along with the environmental concerns and worsening economic conditions means that many companies are making stricter return policies. I think that if they can streamline the shopping experience, give better information about products online to help customers make better decisions/choices it will be better but simply refusing to take back bad, or faulty products will make people like me feel better to just become a big time saver. Saving money is good but saving too much money is bad for economic growth.

      Yes, I agree! There needs to be consumer spending otherwise the economy collapses...
