- Earlier this year Tim Paisley had the opportunity to meet and film a conversation with Chris Yates which includes a thrilling description of his capture of the record carp from Redmire in June 1980. For fans of carping history this is not to be missed.
Filmed by Thomas Duncan-Dunlop & Tim Paisley
Edited by Lloyd Rogers
"Casting at the Sun" was my favourite book as a kid. Had to read a passage or two aloud for an English class project and my teacher and many of the kids loved it. Then came "A Passion for Angling" and Chris cemented a place in my heart forever. A gentleman, an enigma and a hero. Thank you, Sir.
No need to lie by Richard Walker was my favourite book great illustrations aswell used to fire my imagination the night before a session fishing 🎣✨️ Sadly I cut the illustrations out the book for a school project 😢
Fantastic
What an absolute Gentleman. Like many, I grew up on the compelling stories of Chris Yates who got me into fishing. Now I have the ultimate privilege of passing the knowledge down to my two boys.
Storytelling at its best, pure joy, I’ve read his diary 4 times
The picture of Chris arriving at the venue captured a piece of heaven on earth.
I remember when the photo was first published, think it was Anglers Mail ? I was 14 years old and stuck it on my bedroom wall, would stare at it for hours, Chris & Rod are the reason I’m still doing it today, superb 👌🏻
Great video of the legend that is Chris Yates. I had the pleasure of meeting him 2 weeks ago and his calm attitude and passion for what he does are very inspiring. Bless him.
Wonderful man, could listen to him for hrs, and love his books
A passion for angling made me start fishing again in my early teens fishing has been my saviour in some very desperate times in my life i cant thank Chris and bob enough for that wonderful series maybe its been equaled by catching the impossible but its unbeatable to me❤
The best fishing series ever 😊😊
Chris and Tim have been a massive influence on my angling. I love chats like this between members of the old guard. I feel they are, or will become important documents. It was a different world and a lifetime away from all the technology and bankside comforts that we enjoy today.
His books were such an inspiration. I remember watching a passion for angling while on a camping trip in Cornwall as a kid. It had a lasting impact.
Also met chris at the NEC in Birmingham. He had time for me and was amazing to meet the legend!
I could listen to Chris talk about angling forever. Legend!
Thankyou mr Yates for playing your part in creating the perfect thing we call carp fishing today your stories are so special thankyou one of my real life hero’s 👍
Awesome rendition of a beautiful memory of catching a fish of a life time, so humbling to listen to a man who got his wish come true through hard work and dedication, what a marvellous achievement Chis ❤️👍
Wonderful, thanks for putting this on the record. One of the few things I like about modern carping is how it has revealed the potential maximum growth of carp, so these mythical monsters of redmire (50, 60 nay 100 lbers as big as a man!) were just a bit ahead of their time.
Thank you very much for this. I haven't been carp fishing for 30 years, wildlife photography and natural history takes up too much time. But it was an important part of my life, which I will never forget. I never met Chris, although I did know people who knew him. I have met Tim, but he would never remember me, because I was a nobody. Actually, I was fishing Berth Pool, when he was fishing the Mangrove, and I knew about Pinky and Perky in Erewhon, 40 year ago. I used the names that I think Tim invented, because I don't know what the current status is.
I'm a mate of Paul Gummers. He introduce me to carp fishing. Told me all about fishing at Redmire and your enormous carp. I read your book Casting at the Sun. I like the bit about ghosts.
Two legends having a chat,bliss!
This guy can tell a story. The detail is fascinating
I remember seeing it in the angling times.at the time a 3lb common was a fish of a lifetime on my local water.it was fishing on another level.grwat memories.
Remember this capture as if it was yesterday, can't believe it was 44 years ago.
Facinating hearing about the ‘King’ as well.
And that might be the fish Eddie Price photographed in 1958 which was said to be around 70lb
Still quite a young fish at 24/25 years old in 1958.
Love chris, read all his books many times 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Wonderful story from a fishing legend - thanks for posting😀🎣
Some legends mentioned here, Jack Hilton, Rod Hutchinson, Bill Quinlan and obviously Chris himself. Halcyon days!
Lovely to hear from Chris and know that he's still about and looking well. What a fish and story.
This will always be the record carp for me. So much romance, feeling and mysticism about carp fishing back then. Nowadays it's more of a military operation.
An amazing story told by an amazing man from a time before all this high tech stuff when fishing was magical.
Wonderful story, from an equally wonderful gentleman.
I remember that in the Angling Times....Legendary fish and angler.....
Chris's map shows the ghost, but I've only heard of his account in passing. Others claim to have heard strange things at Redmire, it would be good to hear Chris's own account.
I always wonder if it was not for boilies would the Bishop still be the record. Seems about as big as a uk carp could grow naturally.
A MARVELOUS MAN🙌👏👏👏👏👏
Beautiful story
I could listen to Chris all day.
awesome video
This guy is a legend
Brilliant! 👌🏼👏🏼
Back when carp fishing was carp fishing…brilliant. Shame Hutchinson isn’t still around to tell his stories
You're making me a tad nostalgic...
Outstanding ❤👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wonderful storytelling
It seems so distant now, in the days before boily fed monsters
Great moment in angling history
Brilliant video. That’s all there is to say ❤
legendary fish and angler...

The background music is quite unnecessary
Negative Comments about such a wonderful story are Quite Unnecessary …
