Towing a Hummer EV Out Of a Garage!

- This Hummer EV died inside the customers garage. Had zero electrical power, and wouldn’t take a charge or a jump, which means the only way is to drag it out on skates!

How you gonna get it off the truck when you get too the shop?
@@tax905972skates, shake. Once rear is on the ground, leave front skates, walk the truck out from underneath.

$200,000 WELL SPENT! LMAO! I'd be embarrassed and pissed off.
There’s always a Karen who is left to supervise the situation.
As a former GM owner of multiple models, I've learned to absolutely hate this manufacturer. I no longer purchase GM products, and my wallet and mental health have thanked me for it.
Many of my family are GM loyal and have been for over 50 years. I'm not on board with them on that. My experience is that my whole life they are always repairing their unreliable GM cars. Personally, I havbe never owned any GM autos and prefer other more reliable brands. My Toyotas have all reliably gone to 300K+ miles with nothing but regular oil changes, basic scheduled maintenence and routine tire changes. I would love to be able to buy any American brand that will do that. I do buy American when practical and that is usually with full size pickups but none are ever GM. The worst repair I have ever had to make to my 1999 F250 Super Duty was a very recent gas pump replacement. Considering that it is 24 years old now, that isn't bad.
@Kevin Adams sadly, nothing is American anymore. Ford, Chrysler, and GM hide behind the American flag, yet all parts and much of the assembly is done in Mexico, Italy, etc. The list goes on. Buying a Toyota or Honda product is just as good for America as any other manufacturer. And it's better for your mentall health as well. Lol 👍✌️
I’ve watched a few of your Hummer videos, and it leaves me with the impression that these owners may have way more money than they do sense.
I hope you charged triple for that recovery! What a pain. I give you credit for patience, courtesy, and professionalism!
Thank You!
And yes, we were payed accordingly lol
@@Towtruck_Dustin- I hate to be that guy ... you were paid a fee.

nautical sense >>> payed (waterproofing a wooden ship deck or dispensing ship ropes) Money you get paid. Ok carry on!
Dustin, Your calm, cool and patient demeanor along with great customer service and caring for people's belongings will serve you very well in everything you do.
You'd have thought the owner could have at least moved the 2 cars next to you.
GM thought building EV's was going to be easy.
Nothing was in the way?
It really is saving the enviornment. The owner will go nowhere thus a smaller carbon footprint
that's lot of B/S extra work. I hope GM / dealership compensates you well.
It was a fairly lucrative tow, even with all the extra work.
The tow truck driver is incredibly talented. His experience and techniques are exemplary! Plus, dragging a 9,000lb++ beast out of a tight location with minimal damage.
Dude, you have passed the ultimate towing test💯👍😎!
I hope GM executives are watching...
GM tow-mode is needed!!!
Maybe deflate the front tires next tow...
Much appreciated! Definitely wasn’t a perfect recovery. Plenty of things I could have done differently, but given the situation and what I had to work with, the customer was happy, and nothing was damaged. Which was the goal after all.
@@Towtruck_Dustin You’ve got great artwork on your forearms in addition to being awesome at your job!
Thanks!
@@Towtruck_Dustin You are welcome Dustin! Thank you so much for sharing this complicated recovery. Hummers are crazy energy pigs and symbolize the worst of humanity’s over excesses.
I HOPE THIS IS NOT WHAT OUR FUTURE LOOKS
Even the future is dark, we still have to open our eyes and look forward.
Why didn't use dish soap that worked for me
These hummers have a bypass for it to go into neutral vs doing all this work hook up to the 12v and let it power up and go into settings on the screen to put into neutral.
I’m guessing you missed the parts of the video where I say it won’t take a charge or a jump in this condition
Need to get a bigger jack. That EV junk is close to 10k lbs
You have unbelievable patience! After 10 minuets I would have left that $200,000 boat anchor!
Dont you just love it when they stand out and watch you work. Maybe they will think about the next electric 4 ton vehicle they buy lol
TFL channel had same problem with their hummer. Instructions in manual. Disconnect 12 v battery to reset system to allow it into neutral or tow mode
I was just thinking that
Like I posted in the Manual has all that info. Read it know your EV!
I’m a tow operator. Not a mechanic. I’m not there to fix someone’s $200,000 truck, I open myself to the liability of damaging something if I start disconnecting stuff or pulling fuses.
That’s why there are very strict procedures for towing and jumping these things. When they get this “low voltage memory loss” problem, the procedure calls for you to load it into a flatbed using skates on all 4 tires. Not disconnecting stuff. A GM tech can do all that at the dealership.
Looks like you need some 16" wide strips of sheet metal approx 10-12 gauge. Place the metal on the concrete and let the skates slide on the smooth surface. Just make sure the piece further from the truck overlaps the next piece closer.
Customer calls tow truck operator I need a tow in my electric Hummer.Customer hears phone go dead. Tow truck driver to dispatch. There aint enough money in the world for me to get one of those.
Towing them actually pays pretty well. I’ll take every single one they dispatch me. Lol
Get some grease and longer boards for next EV you may have to tow, or the rolling jacks you put around base of tire and pump to lift tire off ground. With these new cars you have to be careful as you were with this one. Great job and bet weren't happy about having to go through all this. Hope you have a Merry Christmas! P.S. Bet these people aren't happy having to get their brand-new vehicle towed already. Have to say yes new is cool but old is so much easier to deal with!!
I AGREE TO ALL you mentioned
Good content I can appreciate because I've always loved vehicles of all kind. It's pretty cool to see you load up an Ev, a Hummer EV at that. However, spanish Karen was really irritating. Hats off to you for handling so well.
Glad you’re enjoying the content!! Thanks for watching
Got to love when customers stand there and watch you work.
Better than them getting in the way to help lol
I’d rather them be off to the side watching me load their $200,000 paperweight lol
@@Towtruck_Dustin That’s fair. I cringed when she was trying to help with you telling you the antenna would hit, when we knew that you knew what your next step was.
@@blue.collar.man. it’s her property lol

All of these brand "NEW" vehicle's breaking down within a year or two of purchase... WOW gas/diesel, electric etc.
Justin they sell roles of heavy gauge plastics in any width and length sprayed with a little wd40 may ease your pain
GM owner says to his son what do you want for Christmas, the son says I want a ev hummer that doesn't work. Then the dad says what do you want for your birthday and the son says I want a tow truck to tow it around. 😂
56:13 blocks when you are offloading on a concrete slab checkout the rubber blocks at Harbor Freight. They are cheap, heavy and apply the right pressure
GREAT JOB MAN. GREAT JOB AND MERRY CHRISTMAS. GOD BLESS AND BE SAFE OUT THERE
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you as well!
These trucks are cool as hell, but there is no way I would spend that much money to have those kind of issues. If I spend $200k I want something beyond reliable.
Well, you have to realize that people buying the hummer EV are not buying it for towing or reliability. People buying the hummer EV are like the people who buy Lamborghini, they have the money to spend on a new toy that will turn heads and expect to have to spend big money on repairs.
For me, at least the hummer EV is more useful than a Lamborghini.
If that very expensive electric vehicle was mine, General Motors would be coming to the house to pick it up and repair it or give me my money back under the federal government lemon law
Hey Justin, great work... I always keep 8 skates on hand so that 2 skates per tire . that will make them slide better. Keep on Truckin buddy!
That definitely would have helped. I generally have them snapped together for 2wd’s, but had to split them on this one. The tires on these EV’s are pretty wide.
Get some heavy Guage sheet metal. This way the skates slide easier and less work. That being said, you are an asset to that company and I'd hire you any day
A very talented tow driver.... every tow drivers learns from others tow drivers and that is how it is. I've been in situations similar but towing a taco truck nothing like the hummer. I always use dish soap and water to slide off the platform even with the slider skates on. I've started into towing industry since 1997 when diesel was 0.67 cents a gallon in hayward california bay area and could run the truck none stop all day. Today is pure 2023 ridiculous when it comes to expenses such as fuel, location, repairs, tires, maintenances, engine inframe, registration, insurances and etc. The world is different after time to time. Let's see how new ideas in towing techniques comes and all expenses will be like in 5 to 10 years from today.
What a pain in the ?$&@“. Gas power rules!
This is painfully hard to watch..so stupid..No fault of your own. Just a horrible product
Friggin' rich people and their toys!
Always helpful when someone sitting there with a camera....
Understandable considering the value of the vehicle lol
@@Towtruck_Dustin The value is now 0 because it's broken already 😄
I carry 6 skates. Sometimes the one under the wheel won’t go on the bed(especially if it’s just the rotor left, no wheel). Put an additional skate in front and partially on the bed and it will piggy back onto it.
What an ordeal. This was a lot of work on your part. Was that garage on the low side ?
It was very low.
Rule 1 never put a tall vehicle in a garage with not enough clearance. Rule 2 don't buy this vehicle
Another great video! While you were there, did you mentally think about your game plan for when you are back at that house in a couple months to do the repo? 😂😂
Never ever park an EV in your house, ever! ♨️
It's amazing that people who can easily afford these Hummers clearly have more money then brains. It's absolute proof having lots of money doesn't mean your smart.
In a couple/few months he will be back at that house to REPO it. 😂😂
@@ScanFan_Ed facts. 🤣👍✌️
GM’s 115k turd, it’s laughable that a diesel tow truck is rescuing dead ev’s….
You should consider using wheel dolly jacks on each wheel. But with fixed direction wheels, to avoid the car sliding sideways. Using the hammer with the sliding plates could end up with costly repairs. As to the floor of the garage, or the head of the hammer flying off the handle. As the jack handle hitting some body panel.
That will chip the edge of the concrete, been there done that.
Umm did you notice how much room he had to work with wheel dollies would of been to high.
Isn’t it interesting how my 2004 Toyota 4Runner never broke down on me but a brand new ev is over here needing to be towed out of someone’s garage
They don’t make them like they used to lol
where i was born
toyotas are undestrable
Wow, what allot of effort, good job, enjoyed watching, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good job and very professional.
Maybe you could have let some air out of the tires to lower the vehicle.
I saw one service use dish soap to help locked wheels slide on the bed.
You could also use Thor's hammer, that has to be a good work out!
Letting air out would definitely helped, but also brings in liability if they don’t air them back up and I get blamed for ruining their tires.
I also generally have soapy water on the truck but my jug busted so I was out at the time.
@@Towtruck_Dustin
You did awesome and showed a lot of patience. That was a window into the future and the manufacturers will have to figure out how to make them towable. And the WD40 helped big time!
Merry Christmas
It has a procedure for getting it into neutral, but it requires the vehicle to have power. Unfortunately in this condition, they don’t take a charge or a jump. So the next procedure is to skate it and drag it.
You need some dawn dish soap buddy. Slick till it drys then wash away clean and good for osha
9500 pounds of dead weight !
YOU NEED TO SPRAY THE DECK WITH WD-40 SO YOUR SKATES WILL SLIP.
No Dishwashing liquid. Dishwashing liquid washes off with water. you don't know 5/8ths of f all. If you want to be a keyboard/arm chair expert..... get it right
Unfortunately the tow operator will also slip ,especially when it gets wet
Back in the day. I used to use dish soap and water under the tires. Can some times slide a car sideways with the winch. Saves time to.
Should of called a repo guy to move it. It could of been sideways in a bedroom and they could of safely towed it
What a bear of a job. Makes me wonder if a mobile repair crew would be a plausible alternative here, and tow if repair in the field isn't possible.
What's the extra cost to tow this boat anchor compared to shifting an ICE truck into neutral and winching?
Quite a bit lol
@@Towtruck_Dustin I guess you charge mileage plus hourly, with one-hour min.
It depends if it’s a contracted call or a customer request
Buy an EV they said, It will be fun they said. Breaking down so quickly having to tow it in a certain way is well Bull. EVs have come a long way but not long enough where they outweigh the cost of owning a normal internal combustion engine.
Buying a 200,000 vehicle has nothing to do with cost effectiveness.
@@philipcecchini5474 When it comes to tire replacement alone that outweights normal every day cars, when it comes to the time when batteries need to be replaced that alone out wieghts it all when a normal battery pack between 15,000 and 21,000 you do the math.
Not surprised to see the owner hovering about, all concerned. Still, she seemed pretty understanding of the difficulties. I really wish that car designers would stop obsessing over making every system in a car electric. Give me mechanical parking brakes and hud/trunk release any day over electric any day.
What a Drag.
Thats too much money to break down it should run for ever. She was watching you like a hawk.
The lady was super funny about you doing your job!
After paying that much for a vehicle that now has to be drug out of her garage it’s pretty understandable lol
Most definitely!
One plus for these Electric vehicles, you don’t have to worry about getting car jacked or it getting stolen. 🤔
They are probably easier to steal now than ever. The wrong person with the right computer software, press a few buttons and you’re in it and driving.
Don’t have to worry they’ll steal the catalytic converter
There’s a video from donut media of them getting into a Tesla with a built device
A bottle of cheap dawn dish soap goes a long way making things want to slide much easier. Lil truck has saved me more then once. I used 50/50 mix with water.
Watching this, now I know to charge more for the time it’s gonna take… but if law enforcement says drag that MoFo I would just make sure he understands his liability.
Working accidents and such with these is definitely going to be interesting.
No way in Hell...could i trust a car jack that squeeks like that.
From 25 years towing experience . Buy you a can a clear spray silicone. You could spray it on the bed of the truck to grease it up for it to slide easier. Dont think im trying to tell you how to do your job. Im just trying to help. I have even been in situations where i had to put the tow truck in neutral and drag the tow truck under the car. I did that several times on the same corvette numerous times
In a previous video I did just that but with WD40. Definitely makes it a lot easier. I normally keep a jug of soapy water also but it busted prior to this video.
Hummers are a nightmare, loading and unloading
Put some Vaseline on the tires and yank it out. GM should include a jar for each of their hummers.
I pray the slight jerks on the wheels don't result in drivetrain problems when the power issue is resolved. Some tow truck drivers won't pitch to a Hummer EV callout from now on.
Yea i was sure happy to see those skates come out. That owner would sure throw a fit if you started dragging that that junk outta the garage
Yep. That’s one of the first things on the towing procedure from GM.
Oh, you can bet that I’ll be running out right away to get one of these! NOT!!!
EV Hummer… broke down? What a surprise.
This is why you should wait for the tesla cybertruck. 😂
Tell that woman to let the professional work and go make you a ham sammich.
Imagine using volatile memory in something that is by design gonna get low on power eventually
Even though engineers are smart, they come up with some stupid ideas. Lol
To bad you didn't have go-jacks that may have helped you move it easier. Or a wheel lift and dollies
Go jacks wouldn’t have helped. They would make it a pain and not track straight.
No headroom in that garage for anything. @@pleco652
What a nightmare.maybe some of those old roll up plastic sleds and another pair of skates or those cheap dolly's I'm spit balling. Good luck on the next one!
Those trucks weigh about 9000 pounds I heard
They should sue GMC for selling electric trash that can't even move...
sounded like the 2ton jack struggled lifting that 9k lbs
Definitely needed a bigger jack lol
How many horsepower does the electric tow motor have ?
What a pain in the butt !!!! You did a Great job ....Those Hummer EV are NOT worth money
Dude will be reconsidering why he bought a. Electric hummer.
They should have the bugs out of them within a couple of years ................
A little water on the bed is a good lubricant. Maybe sand on the concrete.
owner was dumb for buying this thing in the first place
Not much Roof Clearance!! Wow
This is my second times watching 2 Hummer EV being towed. The other Hummer EV, you put a jump box. Why not this one?
No class B CDL for this right?
Because the service tech at the dealership recommended them not to attempt a jump.
But yes, no CDL required.
Probably dumb question.
In this case. With those skates you had on board, would wax work? Putting some skateboard wax on the path the skates were dragging on? 🤷🏽♂️ just wondering.
I generally use WD40 or soapy water.
window washer fluid works also
I hope she won't try to fit a semi in her garage
This is convincing me to buy an EV .:D This way I can get stranded in the garage , wait in line to charge the EV at chargers, sit at the charger for hours charging then after 10 years, spend $50,000 + on a new battery.
Maybe the solution is to have a custom 4 wheel dolly with motors that will drive under the vehicle, lift it up 1 inch on all 4 wheels, drive the vehicle up onto the tow truck , lock itself down onto the tow truck then at the other end do the same in reverse.
I would refuse to tow these trucks. If you cant put them in neutral then they need a redesign
More money for me lol
@@Towtruck_Dustin do you charge extra for ev?
Not extra, but because they’re so heavy, they’re considered medium duty, so they pay better in general.
U need to carry dish soap with u so u can put it under the skates and it slides right off be safe out there tow- brother
Dustin, If you can't tow one of those EV's than how do they get it into the shop worked on?
It’s going to have to be towed.
Carry a bottle of dish soap put on the tires so it slides.
I generally do, but my jug had busted prior to this tow.
ITI makes a wonderful selection of skates
It should have a mechanical means of releasing the wheels for towing
It should. But it doesn’t, because the drive system on an EV isn’t mechanical.
All you have to do is get you a spray bottle and some dishwasher soap with water and skates would slide perfectly
It's mad how delicate you have to be with those so called "tough monsters"...not to brake anything...sounds and looks like really "TOUGH" machinery :D.
But brilliant work and real TOUGH nerves :D to be watched like that when things are just as they were... real good job!
Thank you!
Man i guess that lady thinks this is the first time you have done this brother. I understand the ladies concern but companies dont send beginners to pock up 100 k trucks and cars
Exactly. I’m by no means the best out there, but I’m the operator my company sends to tow stuff like this because they know I’ll do what I have to to care for these high end cars.
But I’d still probably watch like a hawk if I was having my $200k vehicle drug out of my garage lol
Dawn dish soap , sand or oil dry works better than those damn skates.
Sand on the concrete and dawn on the bed for this call.
To much time on scene to make any money having to deal with all that
Not if the wheels roll.
Hope you charge extra when the owner "helps" like that.
What a crazy hassle. Thanks.
Man, I tell you what I have a new found respect for tow truck drivers… that looks like a pain in the ass.
You get those jobs now and then lol
Hi, bro. If you have to do this in future just keep with you sort of belt conveyor strips, just put beneath tyres keep the ground facing dry and just spill some grease on the surface the tyres are riding it would do the job better than you are doing now
Using skates and dragging it, is the factory approved towing procedure, assuming it wont take a jump, as was this case.
