I love that Jax genuinely appreciates Snow White’s virtues as a character and actually places her and the film in context with what was going on in the real world when this movie came out (1937). And from an animation/film history standpoint, it’s honestly hard to quantify the sheer impact Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs had, with its meteoric commercial success and innovative techniques carrying Disney through its golden age.
And just to put an asterisk on the “first animated feature film” point: it’s the first cel-animated feature film; there were earlier animated movies made with different mediums from Europe, for example Lotte Reiniger’s stunning paper cut-out animation films.

Fun fact: the voice of Snow White (Adriana Caselotti) heard her father on the phone with Disney talking about how he needed a voice for Snow White, so she started singing loudly in the background. Disney heard her, and that’s how she got the part! 😄
Also, this movie won an Oscar, and Walt was presented with one regular sized one and 7 small ones. 😊

All the other studios thought Disney was crazy to do an animated feature. He had borrowed a lot of money to complete this feature and the bank wasn't going to lend him the money until Walt showed the bank people what Disney had completed so far. After the bank people saw the existing footage, one of them said "This movie is going to make a million dollars." IIRC, it made several million.

20:43 - I know something they _did_ have a debate about. When Snow White runs through the forest, there's a moment where she falls down a long pit. Used to more "cartoon physics" in comedic animations, the creative team had her fall all the way and just land. Knowing this film was going for a more realistic approach (er, minus the magic), someone said, "Hold on - that would kill her!" So they added in the vines Snow grabs onto during the fall, to slow her down.

For the time, this was truly magical. With it being a first in so many ways, many people could have never imagined anything like it. Also, for the time it took people to a place that got their minds off what was going on. It is a fantasy, and you cannot over-think it with today's issues. This masterpiece should not ever be messed with such as "updating" with re-imagining or re-telling the classic story. (Jumping off my little soap box). Love your reactions, Jax.

The Snow White character was drawn by artist Grim Natwick, who also played a role in developing Betty Boop.,
The young Natwick, wanting to become a great artist, applied to study at the prestigious Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, beating out another applicant for admission. The rejected applicant was Adolf Hitler, who grew disillusioned with the art world and entered politics.
So Natwick became a great artist and Hitler became-well, Hitler.
And Natwick spent the rest of his life (he lived to be 100) wondering if he was personally responsible for World War II.

I think the reason the Queen chooses "Loves First Kiss" as the thing to break the spell is because as an older woman who has experienced everything Snow White has not, and i used to taking everything she wants, when she wants it, the Queen assumes Snow White has already kissed the Prince, because she would have.

I remember in one iteration of Snow White, the prince asked that he might take Snow White and her coffin with him to his castle.
On the way to his castle, one of the servants carrying the coffin accidentally tripped somehow and dropped the coffin. The fall caused the piece of poison apple that Snow White ate to become dislodged from her throat and spat it out.
    From there, they got married.

Yeah, the prince shows up more as a reward for all that Snow White has endured, but back in the day, I think people seeing a young woman who's struggled all her life be led away by a silent figure on a white horse to a glowing castle in the sky probably interpreted it a little differently than we do today. I think paring down the story to be more simple and straightforward led to decisions about love at first sight as well. Cinderella gets the same sort of flack for "being saved by the prince," even has the Cheetah Girls sing about her, but if you go and check out her movie it's nothing like that! I love how you can take into account the timing and perspective of the people of the past, but also applying it to modern day as well.

There is a documentary program called the American Experience. A two episode segment deals with the life and history of Walt Disney. About 45 minutes looks at the making and impact of Snow White. The amount of work that went into this movie was astonishing, not the least of which, was they had to invent the multiplanar camera. The Disneys, Walt and his brother Roy, literally bet everything they had on this movie. They went so far into debt in the making of it that had the movie not been a success, that would have been the end of Disney, right then and there.

So- The actual Magic Mirror in this story was from the castle Lohrer Schloss(castle) in the town Lohr am Main, in today’s Bavaria GE. Today it can be viewed at the Spessart Museum in Lohr Am Main. It was made by the Lohr Mirror Manufacture and may have been in the castle as early as 1719. The real Snow White was named Maria Sophia and after the death of her birth mother in 1738 her father remarried (wicked Queen in the story). All of the early Disney animated movies were made for adult audiences at the time. That’s what they had adult themes and were on a “darker” side. I own all the classic Disney Animated movies….Cheers

    Mirror Mirror is pretty entertaining.
There were several Snow White movies made in 2012. In addition to Mirror Mirror, there was Snow White and the Huntsman, Snow White: A Deadly Summer (which played more like a horror film and had Maureen McCormick, Marsha from The Brady Bunch, as the evil queen, as well as the obligatory knock-off from Asylum Films, and a Spanish film version. That doesn't even account for the Snow White storyline on the series Omcce Upon a Time that aired in 2012.

Really enjoyed your reaction to this as always. This is pure movie magic. The process for making Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was based in earlier animations for the shorts. There were also many new processes used. One existing process used was rotoscoping which was invented by Max Fleischer in 1915. This is the drawing of a picture of an actor performing. One example was the party scene where Snow White dances with the Dwarfs. This was truly a pioneering film.
I would say this movie was more about something hopeful during the great depression. At the time this was released, America was mostly isolationist.
When we were kids my father would go pic up slides and pictures from the photo developers. Her would sing, "Someday my prints will come."
A lot of cute animals but sadly, no lambs in the picture. At least they mention dragons.
"Snow white was a boss." That's what Mom's have to be. Especially when I! was one of their three children.

As an animation history aficionado, who has lectured on the subject, I always taught that Snow White was the first animated feature film. But over the 1990s, we in the community came to understand we were overlooking King Kong, released in 1933. I recommend it!

Gooseberries are a green berry that grows on a small bush about waist high with thorns. They are very tart and sour. They grow wild here (Southwest missouri) and were common in the woods behind my parent's house. We made conblers with them. Since so sour we used one cup of sugar with each cup of gooseberries, which is a lot. You can find them canned at some grocery stores next to canned pie fillings like raspberries and cherries. I loved a nice gooseberry cobbler. They aren't too nice eaten plain, but we would just for fun on occassion. Like eating a lemon in a way.

We have Gooseberries here in Sweden too, most of them being the modern variety which is indeed sour and tart.
But where I have moved recently have really old bushes of a wild variety that becomes almost overly sweet when ripe.
downside is their thicker skin that has tons more of prickly points on the berries themselves. I prefer the sour ones though.

Originally Disney wanted his first feature to be Alice in Wonderland and it was going to be a live action animation hybrid starring Mary Pickford, who you probably haven't heard of but she was a huge star in the 20s and was probably the most powerful woman in Hollywood because she was one of the founders of United Artists. He ditched it in 1933 because Paramount made a live action Alice in Wonderland movie

this is what disney was ones and what it choose to destroy, but ya great movie ^^
"beeing clean is great" wel ya but you gotta be carefull with that to,there are several story's of people that stopped washing and when someone forced to them wash again decades later it actualy killed them,a body can be a delecate combination of things and if you disturb that you might create unforseen outcomes, its the same as if you trow a superclean person into the wilds they wil die of infection because there not used to it.
you can think youre superclean but what youre realy doing is just making youreself weak to the simplest of infections that can kill you its not as smart as you think it is to be superclean,am not superclean but clean enough and everyone i know is cleaner yet at the same time i am the least ill of them all.
this is a timeless movie its stil very good today,am a guy and i think everyone should have watched this movie ones in there life.

For some good fairy tale shows, check out Jim Henson's mini-series "The Storyteller" (1987) with John Hurt, and if you like mythology there's a second series "The Storyteller: Greek Myths" (1991) with Michael Gambon. Another oldie fairy tale show is Shelley Duvall's "Fairy Tale Theater" (1983) and "Tall Tales and Legends" (1986).
There's also, from Disney, the 2014 musical film "Into the woods", with the story intertwining characters from different fairy tales.
If you like classical music with animation, check out Disney's "Fantasia" (1940) and "Fantasia 2000" (1999).

Jax, it was neat to watch your reaction to a truly classic Disney film like this, and to hear your commentary on it. You made some really interesting points, and asked good questions, too.
You're right in thinking that this was a big production for Disney. It took lots of time and manpower, and not simply to make and animate all the drawings. According to one documentary I've seen, Disney's first attempt at representing human characters in animation (instead of talking animals like Mickey) turned out very poorly. As a result, the staff realized they needed to seriously improve their skills, so they spent hours and hours researching how people move, and learning how to reproduce it in cell animation. We see the fruits of that hard work here.
I find it fascinating that you mentioned the historical context of the "Snow White" movie. Honestly, I'd never looked at it from that point of view before. But you may be right -- in the middle of the Depression, a famous fairy tale brought to life in a simple and charming fashion, might have brought a great deal of needed cheer to Americans down on their luck.
You brought up a number of deeper issues that went unaddressed in the story, like where the Prince lives, and what kind of person he is, and how he and Snow White fell in love so quickly. It's the sort of character development that tends to get more attention in movies these days, but I get the feeling that these weren't the kinds of questions that Walt Disney was interested in answering. From what I can tell, he just wanted to recreate one of his favourite stories from childhood, just as he remembered it, without embellishment or interpretation or "unnecessary" fleshing out of characters. So all the details you wondered about were just "handwaved". And while it led to a fairly charming movie in this case (albeit with a few somewhat flat characters), this approach would bring a lot of controversy against Disney later when he tried to recreate the Uncle Remus tales in his film "Song of the South".

😎👍 At the time of this film's release, audiences were completely mesmerized by the riot of colors they were looking at. In 1937, probably less than one tenth of one percent of all full length features were in color, due to it being exorbitantly expensive technology at the time, and it was the height of the depression. 🌈 22 years later, Disney would release "Sleeping Beauty," which features a very similar plot, but in that one, instead of an old woman, the evil queen morphs into a dragon. 🐉

Fun fact, Snow White is 14, in the original story, the enchantment that made the queen old was supposed to be permanent, she knew it, but she was so determined to kill Snow White that she didn't care. And she tried three times to kill Snow White. Once with a magic comb, the second time with a corset. she had only poisoned half the apple so she could trick snow white into eating it when she tasted the non-poisonous side herself

Hey Jax! I'm surprised u had never seen SNOW WHITE & THE 7 DWARFS before. This movie is my mother's favorite Disney animated feature. Her 2nd favorite is PINOCCHIO. I grew up watching Disney movies & had many trips to Disneyland. Have u ever read the fairy tale of Snow White? The Evil Queen actually tries a few times & different ways to kill Snow White. No woodland creatures were there to save her. It was the dwarfs.😊 I think the Evil Queen in the movie believed that "Loves 1st Kiss" had already happened between Snow White & the prince so she was safe from Snow White ever reviving, but it hadn't. My favorite Disney animated features r ALICE IN WONDERLAND and BEAUTY & THE BEAST. ALICE IN WONDERLAND was my favorite until I saw BEAUTY & THE BEAST, & then it became my favorite. Well, I really enjoyed this reaction.😊👍
