“Hook” is front to back. An up the back release will allow the ball to read the pattern sooner thus hooking earlier whereas getting around the ball generates more axis rotation and will allow the ball to clear the fronts and snap harder when it reads friction, thus hooking later. Just don’t want the term “hook” to be confusing for viewers. :)

I blame the bowling gods for making it confusing in the first place the vocabulary terms are often very hard to apply, for me anyway.

I always hear people especially the older folk say “straighter is greater” for house shots. I have no issue with “flattening” my hand and in league tonight I’m going to play more right and less hand around the ball, at least starting out and take it from there.

You will use the up the back release way more often than you would expect. Don’t get locked into the idea that it’s only for playing straight and close to the gutter. More often than not you will use it playing deep as well, as getting around it will give you too much length causing you to miss the spot. You can also use the up the back release to control the cliff on house shots by creating a hook/stop motion so if you miss right your ball is less likely to overreact and result in 6 through the face.

Would love to be more consistent bowling straighter. Typical league night goes like this. Throw a few practice shots, find out the lanes we're burnt up by the previous league, not feeling comfortable to play my strong reactive balls and be that far left so decide to play urethane. Immediately hated by everyone.
If I can still utilise some of my strong reactive balls and still play right of the gutter, it would give me some much needed flexibility.
Seems from my practice so far is struggling to find the right starting position and not lapsing into a more natural angle after settling into my rhythm.
