  • South Africa's former Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius, jailed in 2014 for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has been released on parole.
Pistorius - known as the "Blade Runner" for his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs, shot the 29-year-old model and law graduate through a bathroom door on Valentine's Day in 2013, and later repeatedly told courts he had mistaken her for an intruder.
He was initially jailed for five years in 2014 for culpable homicide by a high court but the Supreme Court of Appeal in late 2015 found him guilty of murder after an appeal by prosecutors.
He was sent back to jail for six years in 2016, less than half the 15-year minimum term sought by prosecutors.
In 2017, the Supreme Court more than doubled his sentence to 13 years and five months, saying the six-year jail term was "shockingly lenient".
Author John Carlin covered the case daily and interviewed Pistorius during the trial.
In an interview with The Sun he talks about the character of the man he met and what he thought about him and if he meant to kill Reeva Steenkamp. He also offers an opinion as to what the athlete will do now he is out of jail.
The Department of Correctional Services announced the parole in November, adding that Pistorius would complete the remainder of his sentence in the system of community corrections and will be subjected to supervision.
Several factors are typically taken into account by a parole board, including the nature of the crime, the possibility of reoffending, conduct in prison, physical and mental wellbeing and potential threats a prisoner may face if released.
Pistorius was denied parole in earlier last year, after it was ruled that he had not completed the minimum detention period required to be considered for parole.
However, the Constitutional Court said in October that Pistorius had served half of his sentence by March 21, which meant he was eligible, after his sentence was backdated to July 2016 instead of November 2017.

If you think someone is in the bathroom who doesn't belong there, First you would warn them you have a gun. And to identify themselves...Not to start shooting without knowing who was in there...

even if he didn't kill her on purpose, it was ridiculous of him not to check where she was in the house before firing. extremely poor gun safety

I thought he was another spoiled brat celebrity, and was sure he had just bumped her off...... Until i watched the trial. From all the evidence i listened to my mind set completely changed.
    Yes he killed her.
Yes i believe he thought it was an intruder and he felt vulnerable and unable to protect them both, so he took drastic measures

The other case is NOT similar, because Oscar had anger issues and evidence was given in the trial regarding this matter and his trigger happiness.

I can say it....he definitely killed her on purpose on some type of rage. The motive was his jealousy and controlling behavior. There was no "video" of that but it is rather obvious - just could prove it "enough". He got off cheap.

Is this man the most gullible man alive? No wonder Oscar to him out to lunch!
Also, the idea that if it was somebody other than a beautiful model who'd been shot then public opinion would've been on Oscar's side is delusional. The reason public opinion is against him is because we all saw the trial too! Oh, and the saying... _"it's not what you know, it's what you can prove"_ certainly applies to Pistorius.

People in South Africa who commit murder get life and life without parole.. his case was different... he was found guilty of culpable homicide....and received a less sentence... but the prosecution took it further and it was overturned ans was changed to murder because of dolus eventualis argument
