- In this video, I review the Bessa R rangefinder camera long with a Jupiter 8 f/2 50mm Sonnar lens from Russia. I've been pondering cheaper rangefinder options and the Bessa R seemed like a perfect candidate!
All images in this video were made with Lomo 800 35mm film.

man your vlogging lens is so sharp it makes the vid much more pleasing to watch. keep it up!
Glad you enjoy it! Make sure that you are subscribed, excited to share a ton of new content soon.
LOVE THIS COMBO! Cool to see another that came up with the same combo.
Man these images are sweet looking! Love the location Mac! Very vintage and beautiful architectural photography! You need to do a session with one of your models there! I wanted a Bessa but never got around to buying it myself! Maybe one day!
Great idea on doing a model shoot there! The Bessa R was so lightweight and easy to shoot!
Great looking bessa R!! :)
I think the edges of the viewfinder itself approximate the view of a 28mm more of less (25mm maybe) so could sort of give you one more framing option.
I've had my Bessa R from new and it's still in excellent condition. I use it with a Jupiter 8 and with a Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 color-skopar. I probably prefer the Bessa to my Leica M2 for an everyday shooter, although I don't often use either these days because of the alure of digital and the high cost of using film.
Would you be willing to sell your Leica(s)?
The biggest drawback to the Bessa system is the short rangefinder base length, so faster lenses won't focus accurately. I bought the R3M because it has a 1:1 viewfinder and can use a 50mm as fast as f1.4 accurately. If you need absolute Bokeh Bro superiority, the R or R2 may not satisfy, but the Jupiter 8 at f2 matches nicely.
That’s a great point! Effective base length on the Bessa is pretty bad!
I picked up my Bessa-R last year for around $125 and I had spare glass from my other LTM bodies so, I got a bit lucky, the only issue I ever had with my body is the film door windows glue failed causing me to have to reglue it. Really not an issue but that has been a weak point on many of these cameras. For a camera pushing it's 20s it's a really good choice.
I enjoy the Leica M film loading tbh. Feels like a mission.
Ya! Feels “serious.” 😂
I have the Jupiter 8 on a Zorki 4k.
Very sharp. Nice camera all for $60.
Soviet lens matched to a Soviet camera.
Very nice!
What mount do you use?
Cheaper options then Leica...Canonet QL17, Hi-matic 7sII, Konica Auto S3, Vivitar 35ES...just to make a few. I'm really cheap. Lol.
That stair shot was really nice.
All great options! 🙌
@@MacShootsFilm Yea why don't mentioned them than your Pricey LEICA???
I have the Konica S2, and the Olympus SP, and RC Love them, as the lenses are F#Cking SHARP more I can for this guy spending a Arm & A Leg to prove a point, and the way how he broke a new Zeiss Ikon RF camera, and tossing or sliding the Bessa onto the counter as shows that he is not a true shooter with overexpose shots...
Interesting.........I wonder why you didn't take the Leica with you and do a side by shot with both camera.
This is how I got my R. With J-8. As Leitz alternative... I have tried all classic Cron formulas. Sold them all and keeping J-3 with Canon 50 1.8 LTM. Those are just as good, even on digital M.
funky houses! is that CA? Arizona?
Yup! Scottsdale, AZ!
Jupiter lenses have a lot of character if you get a good one. Shame they're not dirt cheap anymore.
Yes they are, I suggest that trying this web site called: Fedka.com as where I got the lenses for the Contax, and also with 39mm LTM, or 42mm thread for Pentax mount, and use them as video/film camera shooting. He is base in the New York City area.
@@alexcarrillo5510 that guy overprices the shit out of soviet gear, excuse my french
The great images speak for themselves. I have used two Bessa T's for years, the meter died in one. Those Jupiter lenses are nothing to sneeze at. Shame the price has gone up.
how annoying is it to have to switch between rangefinder and viewfinder all the time? thinking of getting a T with one of those russian turret shoe viewfinders
bro do you live in scottsdale??
Not anymore. On the east coast now.
I use a Canon 35mm 1.8 ltm on my Leica M2 :) nice video and images!
Hallow from Australia 🇦🇺: just had a look on eBay over here and they are fetching between $800 to $2000
Woah!
Yeah, crazy)) sold mine long ago for $100 with Jupiter 8 😺
bagazheful the postage from America cost more than the cameras at times
@@brianmccutcheon3205 I bought something from Australia and shopping cost wasn't very high
bagazheful what one earth are you talking about lol:
Now the price of the Jupiter is gonna go up 40% 🙇♀️🙇♂️
That's a setup I used to use long time ago. Not to much success
Why?
why? I have a bessa r and im bout to buy a jupiter 8 50mm... bro let us know
@@maxilera9898 it won't focus correctly until you calibrate them together. Besides that they are both nice pieces of gear
Too expensive. I have 2 FED cameras and I really like them
novice here. why doesn't this setup seem to capture the blues of the sky?
Over exposed a stop and the character native to this film stock.
I found the shots that you took with the Bessa, and the Lomo 800, very slightly overexpose, and a slight Green Shift why did you pull it as you could of shot with 200 or 400 speed film... Well that I notice that you did not review some of the shots... So as I was saying that I am not a Leica hater, I love Leica, but do not own them as I rather love with my Contax II, and III I have the lenses of the Jupiter line, I have the 35mm 2.8, 50mm 2.0, and the 85mm 2.0 as love them on my Contax models, very sharp, and I normally use them with B/W film... Have use color film but it tends to goto the Blue Shift, in which it is not bad when shooting in Overcast days. But Very Sharp... But I do have two Zeiss lenses the 50mm 2.0 Sonnar from my Father's Contax IIa, and also have he Zeiss Biotar 35mm 2.8 now that lens I use it for B/W, and Color, and very Sharp, and contrasty as I do love the Jupiter lens line as well... Beat that Dude, and I did not break the bank when I got my Contax Rangefinder's line, and lenses.... And film that I use is Ilford HP5, and Fujicolor 200, and 400 film... And in Closing that for me and my Contax's models that I have dated from late 1940's as they are MY Leica's.. Along with my external light meter, AND my two RF Canon's the Canon 7, and the Canon Vt... So I am happy in what I am using.... Oh yes you said that you have been doing photography 10 years you said... I borrow my Dad's Contax when I was in high school, and love the model that I got myself Vintage Contax for me, and kept shooting, and I am 64 as I have been a shooter for 48 years... And last Do not throw your cameras across the counter top Ok you might break them which it proves that you are not speaking the truth of photography.... Just a Showman... Yea just look at photographer?? Matt Granger, WOW has He has an Ego about the size of Silicon Valley, California. Now I'm Done... Can't wait for your next video due to that I will be giving my views....
Nobody cares about yr essay dude
@@sooperheep Good Nobody Cares about your you breaking the bank to BUY another Leica Lens to improve your Ego, as I shoot, and appreciate for what I do, and to others as I do not buy expensive toys like you, and remember I have hash marks than you Jack, but do I Care in what you do?
