  • In this video, I review the Bessa R rangefinder camera long with a Jupiter 8 f/2 50mm Sonnar lens from Russia. I've been pondering cheaper rangefinder options and the Bessa R seemed like a perfect candidate!
    All images in this video were made with Lomo 800 35mm film.

    I think the edges of the viewfinder itself approximate the view of a 28mm more of less (25mm maybe) so could sort of give you one more framing option.

    I've had my Bessa R from new and it's still in excellent condition. I use it with a Jupiter 8 and with a Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 color-skopar. I probably prefer the Bessa to my Leica M2 for an everyday shooter, although I don't often use either these days because of the alure of digital and the high cost of using film.

    The biggest drawback to the Bessa system is the short rangefinder base length, so faster lenses won't focus accurately. I bought the R3M because it has a 1:1 viewfinder and can use a 50mm as fast as f1.4 accurately. If you need absolute Bokeh Bro superiority, the R or R2 may not satisfy, but the Jupiter 8 at f2 matches nicely.

    • @MacShootsFilm
      @MacShootsFilm  Před 3 lety

      That’s a great point! Effective base length on the Bessa is pretty bad!

    I picked up my Bessa-R last year for around $125 and I had spare glass from my other LTM bodies so, I got a bit lucky, the only issue I ever had with my body is the film door windows glue failed causing me to have to reglue it. Really not an issue but that has been a weak point on many of these cameras. For a camera pushing it's 20s it's a really good choice.

    I found the shots that you took with the Bessa, and the Lomo 800, very slightly overexpose, and a slight Green Shift why did you pull it as you could of shot with 200 or 400 speed film... Well that I notice that you did not review some of the shots... So as I was saying that I am not a Leica hater, I love Leica, but do not own them as I rather love with my Contax II, and III I have the lenses of the Jupiter line, I have the 35mm 2.8, 50mm 2.0, and the 85mm 2.0 as love them on my Contax models, very sharp, and I normally use them with B/W film... Have use color film but it tends to goto the Blue Shift, in which it is not bad when shooting in Overcast days. But Very Sharp... But I do have two Zeiss lenses the 50mm 2.0 Sonnar from my Father's Contax IIa, and also have he Zeiss Biotar 35mm 2.8 now that lens I use it for B/W, and Color, and very Sharp, and contrasty as I do love the Jupiter lens line as well... Beat that Dude, and I did not break the bank when I got my Contax Rangefinder's line, and lenses.... And film that I use is Ilford HP5, and Fujicolor 200, and 400 film... And in Closing that for me and my Contax's models that I have dated from late 1940's as they are MY Leica's.. Along with my external light meter, AND my two RF Canon's the Canon 7, and the Canon Vt... So I am happy in what I am using.... Oh yes you said that you have been doing photography 10 years you said... I borrow my Dad's Contax when I was in high school, and love the model that I got myself Vintage Contax for me, and kept shooting, and I am 64 as I have been a shooter for 48 years... And last Do not throw your cameras across the counter top Ok you might break them which it proves that you are not speaking the truth of photography.... Just a Showman... Yea just look at photographer?? Matt Granger, WOW has He has an Ego about the size of Silicon Valley, California. Now I'm Done... Can't wait for your next video due to that I will be giving my views....
