It took me around 5-10 plays of this solo to understand how to play the entire game properly, and to understand all the rules correctly. Now I love it! Very deep strategy, and the investment of effort is totally worth it.

I played Lisboa last week for the first time, totally met my (high) expectations. Vital is a true genius and I am still in awe that he could convert this historical event into board game mechanics in such a fabulous way. I truly think this is a work of ART, this is like a great painting or a timeless music album, Lisboa is a Masterpiece. I also enjoy Kanban (Driver's Edition) and Vinhos also does illustrate the Portuguese wine industry very well but Lisboa blows up the roof. Nice video! Cheers from Portugal.

i recently got lisboa and have almost 10 plays. while i agree the the comboing of the public buildings and shops can be powerful, you can always block your opponent when you see what they're going for. decree cards can be very useful. while the clergy tiles may not bring points, they give you benefits that make you more efficient. even cash can give a lot of points if you sell enough good. still, excellent review. i also have Kanban EV and i would play either/or at this point. both are fabulous IMO

One point for discussion - you say the value is a 2 out of 5 because it is expensive at $125, but at the same time you say you should play (and therefore buy) the expensive Gallerist and/or Kanban EV first... I get it from a complexity point of view, but in my opinion the money spent on The Gallerist just so you can tackle Lisboa later is a problem. Personally I bought Lisboa, it was my first and only Lacerda game, and I am happy I went straight for the game that interested me the most with theme and mechanics even though it was slightly harder to learn straight up.
Great point theme really does matter with these games because of the price. I want all of his games lol so I did not think of it in those terms. You are absolutely correct though of you want one game pick the theme that works best because it will greatly increase the times to get it to the table. Thank You for that insight!
Hey Toph, just to let you know, ALL of the COIN games are weighted lower than this and On Mars (4.66) on BGG. The closest one is Pendragon, weighted at a 4.50. :). Also, thank you for the great in depth review!
One point on value. I understand the "value per play" argument, but wouldnt a "value per play TIME" be better ? A 50$ game with a 30minutes playtime, played 5 times is 2.5 hours of entertainement... Thats ONE game of Lisboa giving you approximately the same time/$ value...
I understand where you are coming from and that is always the topic of conversation when trying to rate the value of the games. Neither argument/ opinion is wrong for sure. I have chosen to look at games like and experience so one play one experience and how much did that cost me. Like seeing a movie $15-25 for 2-3 hours. There might be a hybrid way of looking at it as well but I haven’t put a ton of thought into it yet lol. Some games like Lisboa can also be considered a collection piece so you can evaluate the price either. I do agree with your thought process but there are also some negatives with it as well so have decided this is how I will do it lol. Just an opinion and you know what they say about those 😂
Loved this video❤️❤️❤️. My wife and I are still newer to the hobby playing games like Dune imperium and Gloomhaven JOTL. We just bought this game today and can’t wait for it to arrive! The price tag hurts (especially my wife 😂) but I think it’s so gorgeous and I need to play it. As a long time chess and strategy game player(StarCraft 2 and AOE) I can’t wait to dig into a 2-3 hour experience. I’d love to see a video playthrough of this game as I feel you guys have top notch synergy and production. Any tips for my wife and I first game?
So the area where You build has the multipliers and it unlocks your tableau using the rubble. Make sure to do this for points. I hope to get a playthrough on day 😃
Toph here. I agree with Brad, you really do get points from building. The rubble also is the timer in the game. But don't underestimate other areas. There's a lot going on and explore what each action does. Selling goods gets you money. Ships and royalty can get you influence. The church tiles give minor victory points, but can give great advantages for specific actions. Make sure you're doing something on each turn. You can always pass your turn just to collect money, but look for better ways to do the same while taking actions--the actions give much more benefit, especially if you're building towards end-game scoring. I’m a solo gamer and enjoy both Kanban EV, and it’s simpler cousin, Bot Factory. Debating what my next Vital game should be: Lisboa or Weather Machine?
We have not played Weather Machine yet it is still on my shelf. Toph Loves Lisboa but it is a heavy beast. Weather machine seems to have mixed reviews I am looking forward to tabling it. Not a good answer to your question but soon we will have a weather machine review!
I think if you use the player aid its pretry easy to understand what happens when you choose an specific action and everything is numbered and described there. I honestly dont think it is that bad. The player aid also is not that big considering you dont want to see everything in there at all times. You ca easily jump to the section that will show exacty what you want. On mars is a harder game and thats why I prefer Lisboa.
I haven't had the chance to play On Mars, yet. Brad and I want to, but TBH, the theme doesn't do it for me as much as these other Lacerda games. I think the player aid here is fine. It can be hard to read, but I wouldn't want it much larger. I'm quite thankful that they've given us each the opportunity to see the numbered comments, as opposed to having to pass around the rule book. For a game using so much iconography, this should be standard! I agree with you, if using the player aid, it does become a relatively easy action selection game. Now, as Brad gave me a hard time, I'm not saying the game is easy. HA! But, what happens when you do X gives you Y. How you choose to string together your actions will not be so easy. Thanks for your comment regarding On Mars vs. Lisboa. It's going to be hard to top this game for me. I think it's fantastic!

The problem for me is that you need to remember a lot of small rules that doesn't come in a player aid like Lisboa and the ammout of things together and all the options you can get with different buildings, scientists etc makes, the scope of the game and how big it is on the table makes it so hard for me to decide what to do, my brain simply hurts everytime we play this one.
Definitely the impression I've got from hearing others talk about it. I want to play it. I like the brain burners (sometimes). Not sure why I'm not as excited about it, though... but, I really feel like Brad said it right when he said Lisboa was Lacerda's Opus. Maybe the fiddliness or complexity of On Mars really does affect me? Or maybe it's that I just haven't experienced it yet? Not sure. But I know I'm happy with Lisboa.
