- Why We Must Learn the Art of Doing Nothing | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Niksen, is a Dutch concept of “doing nothing”. It is a stress-relief practice based on just being rather than being present. It comes with a lot of perks. It helps regain focus and increases productivity. It can even boost creativity. There are physical benefits as well. Niksen can help curtail ageing, anxiety and stress. It can boost immunity. Despite an array of benefits, niksen can be difficult to achieve. Yet this is fuelling a growing number of stress and anxiety related problems. The world faces a crisis of burnout. Will practising niksen help? Why do we resist doing nothing? Palki Sharma tells you.

In my first office job, I was stressing out and overworking after office hours, worrying about results. But reading the Bhagavad Gita, it changed my life completely. I started to not care too much about work or life happenings anymore, it gave me the mindset, "Do your best, and God will do the rest." After all not everything is in our hands. From there on, I rather became more productive and more chill, people sometimes may think I am not taking it serious, but I don't care, it's better to be chill than stressed out.
HariBol
You don't even have to do your best. Life is pre written (every second of it) and you can't change it. At least that's what I believe in now. I always believed in destiny in the past as well🙂
Let me give you my life story as an example -
I am 34. Born & raised in India and living in the US since 2006.
I got married to love of my life in 2012
Bought 2.5 million dollar home in 2015
Blessed with a daughter in 2017
Life was great 🙂
2020 - we divorced out of nowhere - a few verbal arguments here and there for a couple weeks and ex wife wanted divorce. I didn't want divorce.
During the same time, I lost my job where I worked for 6 years without any issues. I got another job within weeks because of my experience. Again no big deal.
Had to sell our home because of divorce.
Now, I am renting a one bedroom apartment. I can easily buy a fancy new house, but I have 0 motivation now.
The worst of all - I get to see my daughter only 50% of the times. She would never see her mom-dad together.
I also always wanted a big family - 3-4 kids. Now, I don't care about getting married again. I have decided to never remarry (or how I like to say it - it's part of my destiny)🙂
Moral of the story is - Don't try to change anything. Let life happen to you. You can't change your destiny. If you are meant to be jobless, you'll be jobless. If you meant to be homeless, you'll be homeless. If you meant to be a billionaire, you'll be billionaire and all of that is pre written and that is too way before you were born 🙂
@@rrboss3721 Sorry to hear what happened and I am happy you are moving ahead. But our life destiny doesnt decide everything in our life it is our actions. Destiny controls major events birth, death, midlife crisis. But we can still make it or break it. The choice is ours. Even i went through bad divorce. I was loosing myself and on verge of self destruction when I discovered spirituality. It really helped calm my mind, accept the outcomes of my actions. Astrologer told I will be settling in abroad. I decided not to. We can change our life for good if you focus on positive side and for bad if we keep cribbing anout what happened, gets demotivated. I have seen people destroy their own lives because of love failures. It is because of their own choices not destiny. Like the first comment do your best, God will take care of rest. Also one more thing I learnt ups and downs are to make us a better person. Learn karmic lessons. But whether we become or not or will do the same mistakes again is up to us.
Be honest and hard working ,leave the rest to the system, human or universal .
@@rrboss3721 Hey bro, I like you perspective towards life. I do not know your whole story but I wish u a lot of happiness in ur life & to your daughter. Hare Krishna.

I think palki watched KingPing staring at the wall
if staring at the blank wall, blanks the mind, and helps a person achieve Niksen, what's the problem...
It’s very close to our Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta concept of doing without worrying about outcome.
You are right, these people have distorted our knowledge and presented it to the world in their own way and after selling it they say it is art.
@@Kalu69_what makes you think only “we” got all the knowledge? The Greek stoicism is very similar to Buddhist philosophy. Good ideas can arise independently in multiple societies

Oh dear. 🥺
GOOD JOB - KEEP AT IT.
I experienced burnout when I was 23 years old .... It took me sometime to figure out what was wrong with me but once I did I basically slowed down ! .... Instead of working all the time I reduced the amount of work I was doing and did it at much steadier pace which made me happy and joyful .... Now it's more quality than quantity for me and I pretty much operate stressfree ! .... 🙏 ....🙂 ....
Reading bhagavadgeetha and understand the essence will make more relaxed 😊
I admire her reporting prowess and articulate nature and fluency her reporting....
She chooses critical issues on world happenings/events very precisely... I love watching her...
This would be a much better world if more people took this advice. Much healthier one too. Sad to say, millions just can’t do it. Many just don’t know how to just chill. Easier said than done.
I'm doing this for 2 years and it has been working for me 😌 I'm healthier and stronger but poor at the same time 😔
Rich in Spirit!
Financially you may be , but spiritually you are not.
I always enjoy being Niksen. Doing nothing is very easy but the problem here is people have a tendency to overthink about their unhappy past events and which will make them more depressed that’s why everyone wants to be engaged.Lots of people are going through difficult and unfortunate personal situations while they are being highly successful at work. People try to manage their personal stress due to family problems with high productivity at work. Usually men does that.
I agree 100 percent to NIKSEN.
.. Have been following this art from a very young age. My parents called me lazy, my friends said that I am a victim of procrastination. Though I could not explain the benefit of lazy days to others, deep inside l felt totally rejuvenated after NIKSEN time. Technology has its benefits but nothing can soothe our minds and boost up our health like nature does.
Read the Bhagabat Gita, an ancient Indian philosophy, the west have atlast understood it….
Everyone around me are cursing me. They don't understand me but I I completely believe in this "Art of doing Nothing" ( I do what I do and I do it at my own pace) it's not like I don't do anything but my instincts are my dictators and I listen to them.
This, along with minimalism if taken on naturally would certainly help the individual and the world in a wholistic way. We call this here in India, the Dharmic way of living.
I am a professor in this art and now i am feeling proud... thanks palki for your kind words 😊
That is what I like with Palki Sharma. She is holistic in approach to knowledge and life! Continue to inform and teach, madam! God bless you!
I always believed my whole life.... My talent will be officially recognized bu the whole world, the media, the news 😂😂😂

I have mastered the Art of doing Nothing. It's now a field of my specialization. Soon, I'm looking forward to opening coaching classes for the same.😂😂😂

I have another talent similar to this but cant tell in public space 🫠

Stress is a part of life, but burn out doesn't have to be❤❤❤ Thank you Palki, the one and only one 🎉
Palki, i call it puzzling.
Turning rainy day activities into a relaxing pre-bedtime routine, I engage in jigsaw puzzles featuring family and friends. Surprising them with these meaningful images framed as puzzles brings joy, accompanied by a flash drive filled with photos and a video capturing the puzzle's assembly. A brief story of the process and a silver proof coin matching their astrological sign adds a personal touch to this heartfelt gift.
That's my Niksen.
got a burnout at 32 . Since then when I feel a job will stress me out , I leave . I did it twice . You get to listen to your body because your health comes FIRST
Same with me
In the modern world, nealry all "productivity" actually involves coercive participation in destructive activity in some way, including limiting our own or other's freedom. Therefore, being "inactive" is less stressful and a step into the direction of true creativity
.
This wonderful woman expresses the concept so beautifully.
That is what I am doing after retirement. Writing fiction (my mind and hands remain active), watching the waves caressing the beach (Niksen), watching the birds playing in my garden, flowers swaying in the wind (again Niksen)... life is beautiful.
Today I got to know doing nothing is a Art 👍🤩👍
it's very tough to master... only monks can control it
Lol yeah. Kind of the world we are living in. Productive world or rather destructive world
No attachments, No strings, No expectations enjoy the flow .. then every min is like a NIKSEN 😊
Nothing : Dont do anything... ignore what comes in mind, what you want to do.... just go out slow walk....unintenationally avoid or skip everyone or everything...Just say "hmm" for everything.. dont get into anything to mind... I am following from last 2 years...do it frequently.... once or twice in a week... but at the end come back to track.... energize your body by the end of this course.
Best example....follow a Indian govt bank employee or govt officer mindset when they are in their office work.
the last line was epic
I had my laugh for sure. To tell you the truth we mocked the bank employees but in the day of digitisation, I owe my gratitude to the Bank employees as not once did they fudge nos. Like what the internet does in the west
The entire core science of yoga and meditation is to get to this state. I am surprised why nixen is getting highlighted but meditation isn't. Shoonya is the actual practice for this and nixen is a new thing that is using up old indian ways.
Exactly!! That’s what I was thinking.. Meditation is just a tool to reach this point of nothingness in a way such that no effort is required.

Dare to be idle, do something without the objective of change, without any expectations of good outcomes. Classic!!
Meditation is just that, if one has understood the true meaning of it. The aim of meditation is to slow down the thoughts and detach from the so called productive and busy life.
Apparently, I have been practicing niksen for quite some time now. When asked what I do, I say, "As little as possible!". I put all or most of my energy into my relationship with my wife. Doing/giving for my wife energizes me always.
I am the master of it by God's Grace 😇🙇♀️🙏

I am a member of NIKSON for very long time, with out my knowledge.
Several years ago came across a book by Maharaj Nisargadatta "The Experience of Nothingness" edited by Robert Powell. It teaches to meditate on Nothing. No existence, no World and no Universe. It is deep sleep in the Awakening state. It works wonders in stress relief ❤
In Bengali,we call it lyad khawa/ladkhor.
I just ❤it.Its refreshing & sort of relieving 😊😊
Everyone should do it😜
Last year I changed my working place for getting more free time rather than going for high salary. This year I'm feeling better than last year mentally.
We are going faster than actually required speed in our life to add millionaire to millions and billionaire to billion. It's not at all healthy for ordinary majority of people. It's just gimmick we want to be rich to be happy, it's all in our minds. We just need a job to support our family, everything will be okay in it's way.
I did this in 2020 to 22. Best time of my entire life.
Our corporate world should recognize this n incorporate it by providing ‘Away from work leave ‘ .
Ive already mastered this art
😂😂
I am master at it. After completing my Vedic training I get to know the true potential of laying still.
It requires a measure of intellectual development or 'enlightenment' & contentment... even to be able to think that we are not in control of anything, so drastically toning down our desires, sometimes even apathy towards life & society in general is required to.... truly relax.
1. In any case, no one is going live hale & healthy for 150 years
2. No one requires a space more than 7 feet to take rest or sleep in a safe, comfortable house ( its not necessary that it should be big )
3. No one requires more than a MaximuM of three meals a day.
This is irrespective of the quantum of money one possesses
And money cannot give you spiritual knowledge, enlightenment or resultant contentment....
(Even a wife & children are luxuries of life, We should be able to live With Luxuries or even Without Them) Both should be okay....
So why chase money more than it's necessary ( and invite unnecessary mental stress )
We should try to think beyond Maayaa
The Dutch are genius 😊😄😂
Reducing the number of activities I completed in a day gave me thinking time, and I focused on giving thinking time for my team also, which they can use for anything they want .
A man and a woman, perfectly happy doing absolutely nothing at all, with each other. It is love. If you ever experienced this, you will understand.
Same thing is mentioned in Bhagavat Geetha, Its called Ni- Karma. The one who does karma in Ni-Karma( In action) and does in-action( Ni-Karma) in Karma ( Action) is a Enlighten human.
It’s very first teaching of meditation- witnessing / observing ..
It’s very much like mindfulness, you are free from past and future and fully immersed in the moment.
Bold and confident journalist.
Doing nothing but observing everythimg makes mind more fresh
Thousands of years before, Our indian culture has meditation, means doing nothing and observing the inner self.
Now a days people are so obsessed with these kind of words like niksen. But all are same. Only those who couldn't have courage to go into the depths of meditation, will finds these kind of words to make it or prove it greater impact than meditation. That's it.
Meditation also involves active involvement of mind
Palki Sharma's presentation pronounciation &voice agood combination of news presentation.Thanks.
This concept is there very much for a long time in Tamil spiritual culture. It is called ‘Summa iru’ which means ‘Just be’. Refer to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi’s teachings or Arunagirinadhar’s teachings. As usual, many like it only when it is marketed by westerners (e.g. Yoga).
"5 star University" is teaching the art of doing nothing from time immemorial. We know this concept from the start of our lives ❤❤❤
Universities have always taught the art of doing nothing, that is their specialty, they teach their students how to get the working classes to do all of the work, while the graduates just watch and take notes.
I can easily do this when i start thinking "what is life and why? "😂
A lot of older traditioned men have mastered this a long time ago, interesting to see some folks calling it art, when some thought it to be laziness... Men mentally have that zone where we like to do nothing
Way ahead of you. I am a zen master at doing nothing!
I'm practicing it, thanks Ms. Palki Sharma for making my day.
Really apologies for this inappropriate behavior but the way palki narrates… despite the magnitude of despair d sadness she has my heart❤️🔥
Learning everyday from her
Yes, we do need a mandatory 3-day work week. This could be done by mandating 2x overtime pay for any hours worked over 24 in a week.
Doing nothing means not just sit alone on a place and thinking all other stuff but doing nothing means sit alone and focusing on your self aware about your thoughts which popups in your mind in a every minute or second just look and try to balance your thoughts and checking what type of thoughts your mind received from this unuverse and environment.
It's not as simple as feel but anyone can be do it better than others if he practice consistently in a right guidence.
For Indians, it’s quite easy to learn from our Super Leader “RG” !
Never worked / No Work / No Stress / No worries!!! As long as you have & sat on the mount of loot, rest of your ONE life YOU LIVE after all, is quite easy go!! ....... end of the story of worry
Its not about tiredness, Its simply all about incapabilities of today's generation and getting weaker day by day as compared to our ancestors, who literally worked hard with no sufficient technologies in hand, and yet they were stronger.
Todays generation people are just tired of media....If media is BANNED, then life of people would be very easy.
Thank you for the video.
Corporates (and authors) for their own benefit have created this illusion of “work hard , party hard”, “aim big”, “greed is good” , “ never be satisfied or content” etc. this is and various other problems are result of this culture
I have mastered the art of doing nothing. Started when I was in my teens.
Freedom is if you don't have to do nothing and
don't have to pay for
nothing..

Not a difficult issue if
you realise that you only
live once!😎

THE VERY DEFINITION OF MEDITATION IS - THE ART OF DOING NOTHING.
THE ART OF BEING.
I appreciate, definitely that the world is taking heed of RELAXATION & NOTHINGNESS. MODERATION MINDSET.

💎🏆 Great insightful & fruitful video 🏆💎
Surprising to see such views from Indian journalists !!! But doing nothing is very hard as we are so much conditioned from our childhood to do multiple things so that you can better life later. This conditioning is so strong that we continue to be busy throughout our life. And then we give meaning to this by saying "empty mind is the devil's mind".
😅 I have been doing this for relaxation and it came in naturally to me and my circle. I can't believe that society has become so focused on productivity that common sense has been forgotten.
Finally something I'm number 1 at....😌
Absolutely doing nothing while truly thinking about something 😊
The concept of the "art of doing nothing" does have its roots in various Eastern philosophies, including Indian traditions. In Indian philosophy and spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation, there is a recognition of the importance of stillness, quieting the mind, and being present in the moment. This idea aligns with the concept of niksen and Osho's teachings on mindfulness and meditation. In these traditions, the practice of doing nothing isn't about laziness or inactivity but about cultivating a state of awareness, inner peace, and relaxation. So, while niksen may be a Dutch term, the underlying concept of embracing idleness and stillness has parallels in Indian philosophy and spiritual practices
Thank you for sharing!
Love to palki mam and her team for relevant topics covered by them
Do nothing but do it with a purpose. Now that is going to cause a lot of stress for me!
An ode to idleness, an ode to whims.
