Many of us fans do miss Highfield Road. However the past couple of seasons have brought us success that we’ve not seen in a very long time. Even just winning games week in week out, the atmosphere has been fantastic and many are saying the ricoh finally feels like home

Many fond memories of Highfield Road. I definitely feel a pang of sadness when I think of it being no more. The new stadium is great, and in many ways, its infrastructural improvements and modernisations were much needed. That aside however, Highfield Road was sold because of awful financial mismanagement and over-spending and we've never owned our own stadium since then. All of our problems since then can be traced back to bad business done in 90s, and for me, Highfield Road's demise is symbolic of the clubs fall from grace in recent years. That said however, fingers crossed, we seem to turning things around and for the first time since I was little kid, there's a great sense of positivity about the club, and the CBS is starting to feel more like our home, as we're beginning to forge meaningful memories and successes there 💙. Play Up Sky Blues 🙌🏼

Coventry were the plucky underdog club that always hit above the belt and never said die. In 1987 they won the FA cup and year after year, they’d push on and survive relegation against all odds, skippered by Leeds legend Gary McAllister. They were a mainstay of the first division for decades.
    RIP Jimmy Hill

As a long suffering Cov fan (thanks parents) who was born around the same time as you, Highfield road will always hold a special place in my heart. Credit to Whimpy for keeping the centre circle (i recall them saying they would) and the same grass area, it could easily have put another X amount of houses on there instead.
I live outside Coventry so the CBS is actually nice for me from a travel point of view (motorway all the way too) and I recall in the 90s being stuck in forever traffic as a kid, but would obviously take HR over it anyday of the week.
There are some small bits on the CBS to try and make it different. There's a load of walls with fans names on it and in recent years they've added a fan zone aswell as alot more artwork around the ground to try and make it feel special (the one side you didn't go to has a giant poster of a load of ex players). There's also a fundraiser going on to try and get another statue up.
I can see them eventually renaming a few of the stands to former players and managers (Mark Robins stand soon?) but for now I think we're all just glad they aren't the Tesco stand, which happened a few years ago.
Ironically because of the terrible choices that had gone on back in the 00s/10s, the CBS actually needs alot of TLC, apparently its crumbling in some places and the toilets are an utter nightmare.

Highfield Road's demolition was a travesty. I never felt it was too small for the club in the Premier League, okay so it had a few chunky columns in the way on 2-3 sides of the ground, and residential street parking wasnt ideal but hey, does that make it any different to grounds which still exist today and have been invested in,like Fratton Park or Craven Cottage?

The main entrance for the team buses was at the top of Highfield Road and lead into the Main stand. The side road is closer to the turnstiles to get into the Main stand. I miss the walk to the ground from the town with a stream of fans, you don't really get that now with cars. Highfield Road was even a walking distance from the train station for visiting fans. There are rumours of some personal benefits made by selling Highfiled Road's prime development location but the need to set up somewhere like the CBS was needed. Unfortunately we were relegated while the move was in progress and gained and lost the revenue from the failed British Satellite Broadcasting company. Things looking better since the EFL Trophy win in 2017. Promotion from league 2 and 1, consolidation and play offs in Championship (possibly could have won if Hamer had not gone off injured). Stadium used for rugby (before Wasps collapsed), Olympic games football matches and of course concerts. Can also recommend the DoubleTree hotel.

Thanks for sharing this video. I have many fond memories of standing in the terraces at Highfield Rd in the 80’s & 90’s. One of the most memorable was beating Forest 5-4 in 1990/91 ish. And getting stuffed by Liverpool 1-6 after they had just won the old 1st division title. I haven’t been back to Coventry for many years so that’s the first time I’ve seen Highfield rd since the stadium went, it was pretty strange seeing it now. Thanks again 👍

Highfield rd was a great stadium loved walking up the narrow streets up to the west end straight from town. Much better then walking up to the CBS. The plaque has been replaced a number of times everytime it gets replaced. As for the CBS never will it be as good as Highfield rd it's a boring modern arena but the work that Fraser group and Doug King has put into it in the last year has been great. They improving so much and finally it's starting to look and feel like our home. Under sisu it was a typical soulless bowl. PUSB

Nice video mate, the ground was surrounded by terraced housing and lacked parking. The onset of the premiership and its money meant clubs were desperately trying to protect their futures.
The chairman and the board at the time thought it would be beneficial to move to a bigger modern stadium.
The Ricoh was the finished product. The move cost the club in many ways.. relegation from the premiership before the huge deals that exist today meant they’d missed that gravy train and the twenty years since have seen our fall and slow current recovery.
The CBS is not owned by the club. They have always rented the arena since its inception.
It’s a great facility though and has great potential
As for Highfield Road it was mourned for by all true sky blues fans but time heals all wounds and it’s a fond memory now.
Many great times were had there, including those great days around the 60’s as we climbed the leagues and up to the success of the FA Cup in 1987.. Even a few good seasons of great games in the early 90’s of the premiership.
The local kids who claimed not to know the history were surely pulling your chain as its well known as the site of the old stadium to any true football fan.

Highfield road could have been developed, the right investment in the city could have had trams going from the train station to the ground, good bus networks and park & ride would have meant the area could have been developed in a much nicer way with the ground improved whilst staying a pillar of the community. However no one with the vision was able to invest and take charge.

The move to the arena was needed in the long term, as is seen by attendances this season.
However, the way the move was implemented was a disaster. Once the Arena was not going to be the national stadium and the club could not afford to own the ground themselves, the move should have been paused whilst funds were acquired by ccfc to complete stadium without council ownership.
The original plans for the new stadium featured a 45k capacity stadium and a retractable pitch.
Sadly, the former chairman had already agreed a lucrative deal with Taylor Wimpy, made it impossible to delay leaving Highfield Road and the council and a charity had to step to complete a scaled down version of the arena. This has created a long term problem which is yet to be resolved ultimately.
Take my home, take me home....
