It’s almost as if this man is telling this story a mere few days after it happened, or right after. It’s like he is Robert Service, and he is telling the story about the time HE cremated Sam McGee. Unbelievably fantastic.
I was introduced to the poems and srories of Robert Service 53 tears ago by Larry Beck, the "Bard of Alaska" at the Expo Center in Fairbanks. Larry performed live on stage during the summer. He was absolutely incredible. When he did "The Shooting of Dam McGrew" the lights in the theater acctually went out and two shots (blanks) rang out and made everyone jump. This rendition and presentation by Hal Jeayes is absolutely wonderful. Well done and BRAVO! BRAVO!
This is the best "reading" of Sam McGee I have heard outside my own home. Hal Jeayes catches the cadence of it perfectly and makes it come alive. Sam McGee was a favorite poem of my Father's. Growing up we all participated in it's recitation at the dinner table. Bravo to Hal and Davin Jeayes.
It all began with "The Shooting of Dan McGrew." Now I listen to this poem every night and it is a wonderfully done and taped salute to Service. It is my opinion- for anyone who cares- this rendition will have no equal.
It was clear one night And the stars shone bright when I listened to Dan McGrew I knew right then I can say my friend From that tale I needed more So I came here I'll make it clear Never knowing what I'd hear But to my surprise I'll tell girls and guys Tiss brought smiles to my eyes For you see its the best version of Sam McGee I think I'll ever hear
As one who is very familiar with the frozen arctic tundra. I find this to be an outstanding rendition of Robert Service's The Cremation of Sam McGee. The video quality is excellent. The staging is superbly performed and provides an excellent effect. Well done.
Sam McGee may not have come out well done, but this version of the poem certainly did!! Any of us that have upheld deathbed promises and their unexpected outcomes can relate to this more deeply than most I suppose. Now how did you get those huskies to howl on cue? ; )
I learened this poem years ago to recite for my kids when camping. Now I have to learn it again for my grandkids and this is the best Iv'e seen. The inflections, and facial expressions are awesome. As I go into retirement I will learn this again. as I know look more and more like Mr Jeayes. Thank you sir, that was awesome
I hear this was my mom's favorite poem from her childhood in the 1930's. I can see my grandpa reciting this to her as she sat on his knee as a little girl. He was quite the poet and story teller in his own right. Thanks!
First Let me say Hal Jeayes is a superior actor His voice was clear ass a bell. The rhythm of the flow in which he presented this poem was easy to the ear . Let allows one time to fully comprehend the gist of the poem. His facial expressions were impressive aspirations of emotions. Davin Jeayes , The production was very picturistic . It reflected the mood and theme with an atmosphere by the enchantments of the background and sound effects. Yes this is the very best presentation Thank you Please do more.
I feel the call of the great white north when i hear this poem. Doubt I'll ever get to see them quiere sights under them northern lights but who knows maybe ill make it up there one day.....
The bestvi have ever heard thanks a million times over my dad is dead 20 years now and i still hear him tell the tale of the creamati9n of sam mcgee in the 1920 s dad said to graduate 8th grade you had to recite a robert service peom
Elementary librarian here. I read this (I almost have it memorized!) every Christmas to the older kids, as my grandpa did for me. Thank you for the inspiration ❤ Merry Christmas!
Serving far away from home & getting a little more than homesick , for the Yukon , I came by hap-stance upon this ... Although it was posted 7 yrs. ago & you will probably not see my posting, regardless , It is one of the very Best !! Bravo & Thank-You !! ( sometimes , something that is created in the time frame of the creator , has long standing meaning , to those that see it down the pathway , you & yours have given that , Thank-you once again )
Though we diverged in '75, and fought on and off through '14, shared heritages and outlooks endure. I think, perhaps, it is an affinity for adventure that binds our anglophone nations. Brashly thumbing my way down the Alcan in April, 1970, in youthful ignorance and optimism, I learned that 3+ pounds of down provide no insulation on the side compressed into an embrace with the old, frigid and lingering snows outside Whitehorse, YT. Visions of wilderness traversed along that slender thread of "civilization" have haunted me for decades since. I could not answer their call, for obligations pulled harder, despite my lingering for times I never knew, though they reside in the memory of my species. You should know that some have, indeed, seen your posting and perceive your passion.
My dad being a great fan of the poems of Robert Service as I am, would have throughly enjoyed this rendition of the Cremation of Sam McGee, I could feel the cold as he spoke. A great performance by Hal Jeayes
Brilliant Job.............Well done Sir. Service was one of my Dad's favorite poets. Also Bobby Burns and Rudyard Kipling . Many years have passed but I can still hear His voice as He would recite them all. Thanks again.
Thank you so much oh my God! You sound exactly like the voice I heard in my head when I was 9 years old. I memorized this poem and spoke it as some kind of competition when I was very young I don't remember the competition but I remember every word of the poem and I heard it in THAT voice. I spoke it as well as I could as if I was an old man. It was probably super cute cuz I was only like 9 years old.
This is a wonderful, simple version of this poem. I am a theatre and Storytelling Pro and Instructor. You have done a fantastic job - I will be using this as part of my lectures for Story Telling from now on.
I heard this for the first time when I listed to Johnny Cash cover it. Great version. Giving this one a shot. Not a musical version but still sounds good.
Lots of people cremate bodies every day all over the world. This is the only beat poem I know about it, and it's terrific. As well done as Sam could hope to be.
There are several interpretations of this great poem on CZcams. Some are more ambitious than this one, attempting to illustrate the story more literally with full-blown reenactments of the individual scenes. There's even a reading by Johnny Cash, which is also very good. But this, I think, is the best of all of them--at least, the ones that I have seen. The actor's face is so evocative, his reading dramatic, and yet natural. He is the most convincing as the teller of the tale. And there are just enough sound effects to add some atmosphere. Well done.
I have learned this poem in the past and am working on it again. It's like a fraternity of (The Cremation of Sam McGee) folks reciting it on you tube. My goal for a fund raiser in October is to recite it as close as I can to Davin Jeayes version, but he is the master! Thank you sir for the amazing presentation. You are the master!!! Larry Potts
the part where Sam's pal lit the boiler fire and stoked the fire with the coal that he'd found before he fed the flames with Sam was perhaps the best bit of the tale
Nicely done Davin and Hal. I shared this on my website for home educators. Great staging & wonderful rendition of the poem. Create some more Robert Service recitations!
Definitely the best version! Great job! I’m hoping to recite this during a reading next month, so I’m listening to various narrators, or storytellers. I’m a woman, but I’ve always loved this poem and memorized it as a teen. It’s been a long time… I don’t remember all but I don’t think it’s about memorization necessarily, but I’m definitely practicing!
I'm sitting up here with my loved one near after camp for two weeks or three. With a load of firewood which I watched and stood while drying by fires weak. And the blaze alight and the look of fright on my wife's face seems like glee. It's our last night here and the looks were clear, it's time for a funeral pyre.
I’ve been to the marge of lake labarge and I too fear that dreaded cold ! For one day soon I to will earn that spot on the Alice May. Lol I love the rendition!

Agreed 👍

This is utterly fantastic!
This is great. Old guy seems like he actually lived it.
Scary, but strangely fascinating.....bbrrrrr ! I got a shiver up my spine.
This is the best "reading" of Sam McGee I have heard outside my own home.

My father as well!

There's none better than Hank Snow's version, sorry
My absolute favorite poem by Robert Service. I hope you've enjoyed it as I have for many years, with a few hundred renditions.❤🎉🎉🎉😅
It was clear one night

when I listened to Dan McGrew

I can say my friend
From that tale I needed more

Wow!! Outstanding and just blew me away. I've been a Robert Service fan since I was just a lad over fifty years ago. Well done. Bravo!!!!
I love how he brings the heart of the Yukon right into your chest.

So extremely well done. Bravo!

I just read this in school. And he makes it seem like he was the actual person in the poem/story.
Excellent production of this great poem. Both the directing and the delivery are topnotch. I enjoyed this greatly!

Superb. For many years I recited this around the campfires for the kids, but I only wish that I were even half this good. Hawk Scarbrough
Lots of people cremate bodies every day all over the world. This is the only beat poem I know about it, and it's terrific. As well done as Sam could hope to be.
One of my uncles could recite this poem by heart, no matter how drunk he was😄
