I am Amanda from Hong Kong. I make easy and practical cantonese learning videos for complete beginners to intermediate level.
My full time job is a flight attendant. I enjoy studying foreign languages. My job allows me to visit many places and meet many people. So that I have more chances to practice what I have learned.
Due to the covid, I haven't fly regularly for over a year. I find CZcams is extremely helpful for maintaining my language proficiency. One day, out of curiosity, I looked for cantonese learning channels. I was so surprised that there are so little and most of the good one are even from overseas. That's why I started "5 minute cantonese" on 2020.

For someone like me who is not musical at all, I cannot understand nor follow the tones. What I have been doing to learn conversation Cantonese is to repeat the words after you have said them...again and again till I feel I have master the words to the best of my ability.
It is still great to learn how the tones for spoken Cantonese came about to teach non native speakers...many thanks!!!

Actually your way is the best way to learn. The number provide additional help when you are not sure about the pronunciation, like a dictionary. We don't carry it nor use it when we speak. But it's nice to know how to use.😊

It doesn’t matter, Ja Fo. I’m a bit musical (I can play lots of chords on the guitar, some piano and I try to sing), but I still can’t remember how to say or to understand 3 of the 6 most common tones. For instance, I can’t tell the different between “buy and sell”, or “crab and shoes”. I mean, I’ll just keep saying “I can’t do that YET”. 😂 😂
      Good luck to us all.

still the best. most non canto will not get it and will struggle. most european lanaguages have few tones (english, french, spanish...). the 6 examples of 'see' was perfect and shows the 6 different tones....

I like your lessons but did not like this one because I think it does not explain what tone is very well. You never say the most basic thing, which is that tone is the use of the pitch of the voice to distinguish one word from another. The point of your example of reversing your name is that the pitches are associated with the syllables and move with them, but it took me a while to realize that that is what you were getting at. I am professional linguist with experience with tone languages so I suspect that if I didn't get it at first, other people will have a hard time with it too. Also, the example you give of the guy who can speak English backwards is not appropriate because what he is doing is different from what you are doing with your name. With your name, you just reversed the order of the syllables, from a-man-da to da-man-a. That is not very hard to do in English. What the guy in the video clip did is produce sounds backwards. That is quite different. Please don't take this as general criticism of your lessons, which I like, but I do think you can do much better on this topic.

Thank you very much for your feedback. I appreciate it. I wanted to express the idea that cantonese doesn't exist any standard rhythm when we speak as we have tone for each word. Which might sound strange or even rude to English speaker. Just like when he speaks in a reverse way, it sounds funny as the standard rhythm has gone. That's what I tried to express in a relatively funny way. But you are absolutely right! It's not a good example for tone. I will beware of that. Sorry and thank you once again for pointing it out! 😊

@@5minutecantonese BTW, if you are interested, I made a sample-by-sample reversed version of you saying your name so you can hear how different it is from just reversing the order of the syllables.

@@billposer9951 it's very kind of you. Must be very very funny as I use strong Cantonese accent to say the word. By the way, do you know we Cantonese love to make fun with English words. Like for example, baby, we'll say it's 2 words instead of one. 😂
