  • I'm going to eat two popular "youshoku" restaurants in Matsumoto, Japan.
This is the episode 2 of 7-Day Food Tour in Japan.
    Episode 1 is here
    • Solo Eating at Popular...
    Episode 3 is coming soon
Yamagata Food Tour (Richmond Hotel's breakfast here was awesome)
    • Incredible Wagyu Beef ...
    More information on train tickets
In this series, I bought train tickets separately.
    1. Shinjuku - Matsumoto (6,620 JPY / 50.90 USD)
    2. Matsumoto - Nagano - Toyama (9,190 JPY / 70.70 USD)
    3. Toyama - Kanazawa (2,860 JPY / 22 USD)
    4. Kyoto - Nara (720 JPY / 5.50 USD)
    5. Nara - Kansai Airport (1,500 JPY / 11.50 USD)
*I didn't buy the ticket from Kanazawa to Kyoto (7,020 JPY / 54 USD) because I had to go back to Tokyo.
This is NOT the best way to buy the tickets on this route.
It's actually possible to buy the tickets like this and save money
    1. Buy the basic fare ticket from Shinjuku to Nara (via Matsumoto, Toyama, Kanazawa, Kyoto)
    2. Buy limited express ticket or super express ticket each day and use it with the basic fare ticket
However, it's too complicated to explain all the fare rule.
    Thanks for watching

14:14 That's because when you asked for a large rice - the chef knew immediately who you were and ordered the staff to prepare the Matsumoto Rice Castle. Then watched in awe from the kitchen as you ate it all. They hung the bowl on the wall in honor of your feat. 🏯🍚

When I see really old buildings, like the castle I often think about the people designing it, building it, the carpenters, stone masons, the ordinary people involved in the heavy manual work and could they have ever imagined that it would still be here now

The apple custard would be my choice. The shot you took from the top floor of the castle was stunning. The Japanese Alps are so majestic. The prices for rooms there are so affordable. Oh yes, the crab croquette looks so creamy and unctuous. Thank you so much for sharing your videos with us. Safe travels always.

Nagano and Matsumoto are beautiful, even in the winter. As a genuine westerner, I'm wondering what makes youshoku "western" food. It all looked pretty Japanese to me, but then, I couldn't taste it, so maybe something about the flavor? The rice mountain was just the perfect size for you 😂 . But no matter, "western" or not, your dinner looked amazing, and it seems as if it was much tastier than lunch! Thanks for the tour, and the moral of the story seems to be, "Don't go to Matsumoto when there's a festival going on"!

    • @Waywren
      @Waywren Před rokem +6

As I understand it, it's because it's Japanese takes on dishes that were brought to Japan from the West, like hamburger steak (the Japanese didn't originally eat a lot of beef), demiglace sauces (on the hambuger steak and the hayashi beef), omelettes (which were turned into omurice, which is basically the ultimate youshoku), croquettes (deep-frying and potatoes are also imports), and tempura (deep-frying again, brought by Portuguese missionaries).

I’m not sure which western country has beef hash that includes gravy but in the US, what we call hash is finely diced (already cooked) meat such as corned beef or roast beef mixed with finely diced potatoes and minced onions, sometimes minced bell peppers and certain spices. It is cooked on a griddle or in a pan in a small amount of butter or oil until the bottom get crunchy. It is then flipped and cooked until the bottom again is crunchy. It is usually served for breakfast with a fried egg. It’s a way to use up leftover corned beef in particular. Of course, now a days it’s a breakfast stable in Northeastern US diners.
