The Story Of High Energy Music

  • Never seen before, not until now, this detailed history was filmed in 2002 and has now been made available for the fans. It contains some treasured interviews of people no longer with us. Bear in mind when watching people's comments that they spoke them over sixteen years ago. This is a cut down edited version from the original seven hours, so therefore, over half of the artists credited on it, are omitted from this version, which we edited together as a greatest hits version.

Didn’t know this existed. I love high energy music and used to follow all the tracks you released as singles. Will never forget hearing your record shack double compilation lp for the sheer power and drive of the high energy beat. What a lot of memories this dvd has brought back and for the first time I can see the full story.
    Absolutely loved it

This is an excellent thread. This guy Ian has his place in this fantastic genre for sure. Yet Moroder, Bobby O. (with and without The Flirts)Patrick Cowley (with and without Sylvester) Gino Soccio, and Denis Lepage of Lime fame as well as Kathmandu were my favorite producers. I don't want to rank these guys as everyone has their particular favs. I like Patrick Cowley work above all. The Teen Planet album he produced is a masterpiece... all the songs 🎵 are great.

@@psmaia82 Canadian record labels like Matra, Tojo, and Power records were promoted as High Energy in both Montreal and Toronto.. why would you say US is the only High Energy? And UK also had a strong High Energy presence. Canada had the very best High Energy acts and producers too that could easily out do anything from the US and UK. I know you're thinking of Patrick Cowley, Sylvester, Paul Parker and Lisa..they're fine and all, but they can't beat Lime, Tapps, Vera, Stephanie Wells, Susan Stevens, Carol Jiani, Vanelle, Eve, Purple Flash, Eria Fachin, Suzy Q, Rainbow, and many more.

    • @joecastellanos4122

@HiNRGboy you make good points. I tend to agree with your opinions but think people simply have their own favorites. Of those you listed, Carol Jiana's Hit and Run Lover is for me an all-time top 3 dance hit, Lime is probably the top overall act along of straight dancing music at least their songs were the most popular at the better clubs. They had the most hits a factor that must be considered. Cowley with Sylvester come next and Bobby O. with The Flirts third. Donna Summer gets the "Queen of Disco" label and she was classy and great too. I think she deserves mentioning. There are many many other great artists to be sure but just like in other genres, for example rock, the bands with the most hits such The Beatles, The Stones and Zeppelin, etcetera... are on top of most best bands lists because of bigger numbers of hits. Doesn't mean they have to be your and anyone's favorite by the way. Cheers!

So nice to see Fiachra Trench, who co-wrote so many hits with Ian. (Never seen him until now)
I'd also like to say to Ian Levine, you will never know how much pleasure your songs have brought me. Dancing my arse off for hours and hours in Hi Nrg heaven, not a care in the world, and most importantly, being surrounded by people like me - we had our own pubs & nightclubs and music made for us - there was still a lot of homophobia around, and it was just amazing to have our own places and music.
The very very best of times, with friends who are no longer here and i still miss them to this day.

I grew up listening to Hi Nrg music from being 18, I'm now 48! It's an upbeat happy feel good music. I still listen to it now, and enjoy discovering artists I didn't hear of back in the 80's. I loved that Hi Nrg had it's roots firmly in Disco, and it's branches grew into Hi Nrg, Boys - Town, Italo Disco, then Eurobeat. I loved all the different locations sounds. USA, Bobby Orlando, Grant Miller, Modern Rocketry, Sylvester, Divine, Miquel Brown, Evelyn Thomas, Barbara Pennington, Earlene Bentley. Canada, Lime. UK, Angie Gold, Eddie Huntingdon, Hazell Dean, Germany, Modern Talking, CC Catch, Joy Peters, Fancy, Sweet Connection, Lian Ross. Italy, Fred Ventura, Fun Fun, Spagna, Ken Lazslo. I was always amazed how Mexico, Japan and Russia loved Hi Nrg too.
I hope your health is improving Ian. Thank you for all your hard work over the years, giving us great music that we can enjoy and hold treasured memories forever.

A great account but very one sided, Ian did do a lot with out a doubt and his input could never be denied. However before "so many men," there were loads of tracks that were dance floor hits on every gay dance floor. Before Hazell Dean had a hit with "searching," we were dancing to "jealous love." " I believe in dreams," a rewording of "lovers theme," sung by Ellie Warren and I think even that was a rewording. "Don't stop the train," Phyliss Nelson. "Eat you up," Angie Gold, "Too sir with love," Vickie Sue Robinson, "dancing the night away," Vogue, " Crusing the streets," Boys town gang. So so many more and for me the one that started it all was "Hit and run lover."

Great job this documentary. High Energy Disco was the real thing and not House. House was not music. It was a set of techniques to enrich music, not a standalone music. And the cherry on top, a live from Jackie Rawe.

We should enjoy EDM regardless, not need to downplay one genre over another.
Back in the day they were DJ's that would mix these two wonderful music genre together and create wonderful mixes.
chicago"s WBMX come to mind, also, Los Angeles Power 106 F.M used to do the same, two different genres for 2 different audiences, both with very rich cultures, yet both have roots from the same tree.

@@rayochapin I agree, the Hi-NRG/House mixes are the best and both have roots from the same tree. I have problem with the repetitive meaningless songs.

It's very bad that a documentary about such an important aspect of electronic dance music was created in the USA, despite having more commercial success in the UK, being developed by 2 pioneers of the genre such as Patrick Cowley and Bobby ''0'' who have been forgotten! a shame

Giorgio Moroder se debe estar riendo de este sujeto.

Its the story of Ian. HNR of San Francisco, NY totally forgotten. Patrick Cowley, Bobby Orlando. Who? This is not the story of hnrg at all.
