You Crack me Up!!!Ditto on the expletive use during IKEA assembly! I end up dually-certified as both a U.S. and a Swedish sailor by project’s end! But heaven help me you simply can’t find a more affordable, aesthetically pleasing and functional piece of furniture, than what you struggle to construct from IKEA. Great tips and insight into your discovery...the laughter was an unexpected bonus.

Just finished putting good ol’ Tornviken with adhesive sliders and..wow! This is absolutely amazing. For the most part, assembly was smooth sailing. Only difficult part was aligning the side pieces with the center and shelves, but we got it all put together in around an hour and a half. Thanks for sharing this genius idea!

I saw in some pictures where they put two end to end and that was pretty amazing. It would not fit in my space, but it's a great idea and look. Maybe as time goes on. Yes, I do want to do live sew alongs for blocks and stuff like that, but I have to figure out how to do it. I'd like to use the good camera but at the same time, I don't want to burn up my electronics running it too much. I think I have to tether to a computer at the same time so that makes it quite challenging. People make it look easy, but it's not as easy as we would like it to be. LOL

I love your Tornviken island!! I wish I had seen this when I started outfitting my new sewing room! I did spend a lot of time at ikea recently going back and forth!! I settled on some Havsta cabinets for my fabric shelves and then two different workbenches from Home Depot - one has lots of shallow drawers which are perfect for my embroidery hoops and my quilting rulers, and the other is an adjustable height table that I want to use as a cutting table, but I keep moving piles over onto it. I love the way your island has the shelves and the sitting space. I can't wait to see how your videos come out! Thank you for sharing and especially for explaining your process!

It is a challenge to have space for works in progress and to keep everything organized. I have the Norden gate leg table from IKEA in my sewing /guest room and I love it! It has 6 drawers in the center section and folds down to a 10" width when the room is needed for guests. I needed a flexible solution for extra workspace and It has given me a 5 ' x 31" work surface which can be easily folded down when the room is needed for guests. Made of birch, and is pretty substantial, but like you I have found a way to move it myself easily by putting felt pads on the legs. It slides easily on the hard wood floor. It was a project to assemble, but the instructions from IKEA were spot-on and easy to follow. Just took patience. I love it. I've seen it on several CZcams sewing room tours.

I'm going to look at it more closely when I go back to the store. Thank you for the suggestion. I've seen some people not give it a good review, but I thought it looked like a great solution for a space saving sewing table. The design on that table is ingenious. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.

Yes I have. I’ve taken over my dining room and it has become my “sewing studio”. My dining room table became the cutting table, I bought risers so it sits at a higher level, and with that I purchased IKEA’s Alex drawer that fits nicely below table. I’ve also began to collect garage storage tables that have been awesome and sturdy for my sewing tables. So far ... it’s working pretty well 😎.

Thanks for sharing your process!! I think the most important take away for people is that the perfect sewing space is the one that we create for ourselves, that makes us happy ,and let's us enjoy the process. There is no one right (or wrong) solution! Just as we are all unique, so too is our creative space. I hope that future viewers can browse the comments here and find all sorts of great suggestions, like this one, and build out their own "perfect" space.

I’ve been reusing furniture for storage and sewing. I’ve turned an old tv hutch to store my machines when not in use and the drawers for sewing supplies. I was gifted a vintage top with ikea legs. That was all refinished for my cutting/sewing table. The room isn’t done yet but I can’t wait to have it completed.

My sewing room furniture, wall cabinets (bottom and top) and sewing/cutting/ironing table and drawer unit is all IKEA. I really like it. I have a small room but I am able to have room to work and room for storage. We picked most of it up at the store and my husband assembled it and put it all together. I think, if I remember right it was something like 67 boxes. He just worked his way through the boxes and put it all together. I love it. It definitely is my happy place! @@PattymacMakes we actually had to rent a pick up to get it all at one time. We don’t have an IKEA where we live but there is one in the city where our youngest daughter lives so that worked out pretty well. The day we were there they did not have the pieces that make up the table top (which consists of two large doors) in the store. So we had to order them. And when they arrived by a freight company, both of them were damaged. Several “dings”, but I decided I wanted it DONE and in most cases the dings were covered by mats or “stuff”. Jenny Doan always says, “finished is better than perfect” so I held on to that. I do believe they gave us a discount since we decided to not return them. Easier for them as well. I have a funny ikea story- my daughter was going off to college so we went to ikea and bought a dresser. The two of us were up ALL NIGHT LONG putting that thing together while my husband slept. We were cussing like sailors too. Once we had it together, we noticed we had put something in backwards, but at that point, we were beyond caring. The next morning my husband got up and inspected our work 🙄, noticed the mistake, tried to fix it and promptly BROKE IT beyond repair 😑😑😡😡. Both my daughter and I were so angry we were speechless and on the verge of tears. He didn’t say one word, he got his car keys and went to IKEA and bought another one. We left the house because neither one of us wanted to say something we might regret lol. He put it together by himself. That was 15 years ago, and now IKEA is darkening our doorway again because of my sewing room revamp. He told my daughter-not me-that he wasn’t sure he would even be allowed to touch it 🤣🤣

Loved the island used as a crafting table. I have IKEA Billy tall shelves that my husband and son put together and bolted to the walls. I store my fabric, AccuQuilt dies, embroidery hopes, patterns, etc. in them. I have a really small sewing room and still need to get more furniture, but can’t until I get a monster massage chair out of the room. I am using a plastic table for sewing, and a plastic storage tower with multiple bins for storing notions, etc. am also using a Home Depot workbench for my AccuQuilt cutter. Everything so far works well, but I really need a sturdier sewing/ embroidery table that won’t shake when sewing on it. It would also be nice to have a sewing cabinet that has storage for the items needed at the sewing area. Also have an inexpensive cutting table that is in constant use. Would very much like a sturdier one, but it is nice to have a dedicated cutting space. I have marked the center of all four sides as I also use it to pin my quilt sandwiches together on it. Works really great. Thanks so much for the information and advice. Very much appreciated. BTW, what are the dimensions of your island?

    • @PattymacMakes
      @PattymacMakes  Před 3 lety

Hi Linda! I love the Billy Shelves. The Daughter on A Quilting Life uses those also. She had her husband add some trim and they look like custom built ins. So they are really functional. I saw something on the showroom floor I really like and would eventually like to do that on the remaining wall in here where I have some knick knaks stored from when we used the room as a living room. If my channel does well when I start working on it again, I would like to add that to completely finish the room for my production space. I absolutely LOVE this island for my cutting and work space. I've been using it quite a bit the past week and it's very nice. I got the Norden gate leg table for a sewing table and it's been amazing to use. I currently have both sewing machines setup and still have plenty of work space. And it's solid. No Shaking. The Island measures 50" by 31" so it's a good size. Two of them together would be perfect, so maybe someday I''ll add to it. Laying out the quilt projects takes SO much space. But for now I'm so grateful to have what I have.

I bought 1,000 comic book boards Golden size-7 ½ X 10 ½. I have three tall book shelves to hold my stash. Most of my fabric is one to two yards long. I have a cutting table that raises and lowers electronically. There is a height that a cutting table needs to be, in relation to your elbow when your arm is folded. A fixed table for cutting out on, can be bad for your back if you dont have it at the right height.
I know my table is expensive to buy in comparison, but I've never looked back.
What I did was, I bought a 2nd hand motorised table which has a mechanism to move it higher or lower, and my husband converted the top with a frame and topped it with opaque glass and LED lights underneath the glass, so it is also a light table. It all came in at around £250 which included the purchase of the made to measure glass.

That sounds amazing! Mine may not be perfect ergonomically, but it's still a massive improvement over what I was doing on a standard kitchen table. And this piece looks so good on camera and makes taking photos much easier. Remember, I have to consider what it looks like on camera as much as, or more, how it is to use. Lots of what I do is centered around my channel and my blog as opposed to making for pleasure. Mostly what I make is for the channel and to create blog posts. And while I certainly do enjoy what I make, it's not what I would be doing if my maker time was my own. I purchased their tall shelves for side by side storage. Love them! My husband and brother put them together. They too cussed the instructions. The shelves are very well made and I quickly filled them with clear storage bins holding sewing projects, thread and fabric. I also purchased what would normally be used to hold shoes in a closet, two hanging cubby things I use to store patterns, zippers, and fabric purchased that is not assigned to a pattern. You know , the fabric you have to have and will find a use for it later. They hang perfectly from the clothes rod in the closet and keep the fabric out of the light and away from dust. One more thing-I have 2 peg boards with various hooks, clips and storage boxes for scissors, rotary cutters, notes, etc. These are attached to the wall - more tough instructions. Love IKEA as long as I don’t have to assemble it. Love your videos!

Thanks for sharing your experience Diane! Yeah these items can be a real challenge. I have a wall cupboard I've put together but it's so heavy I have to figure out how to safely secure it. My next project to figure out.

I love that kitchen island! I would never get it into my kitchen! I agree it makes a lovely cutting table. However, it is out of my price range so I will have to look at cobbling something together with Kallax units. I thought of raising the table top a little so I can slide my cutting mat under when I'm not using it. It is very much at the planning stage at the moment.

It won't fit in my kitchen either!! LOL!! it only fits in my living room which is where I'm set up now. I''ve seen people do custom builds for the sewing room which looks great. I saved my money for this one, and it was a big investment for me. But it's as much an investment in my youtube channel as sewing practice. It's been great for me on both accounts. I am sure you will find the perfect solution for your space! Good luck.

If you go with a plan, and if you do the curbside pickup it's totally worth it. I ordered my items ahead of time and so I knew they would have what I went in for and it was pre paid. I still browsed the store and enjoyed that, but I knew my items were there for me when I went in.

I wish I lived near IKEA... or not (I'd be broke). 20 yrs ago when we bought our house, we needed furnitures and we got some from IKEA, the Akurum kitchen system, the Effektiv office line, the older version of Kallax (still using real wood veneer instead of the 'wood-like' paper laminate), the Nordviken...etc. I found it very relaxing actually putting them together, I never had any difficulties, even hardly used the instruction booklet other than to make sure all the parts were there. I only needed husband's help to lift the finished assembly because they're usually too big and heavy for one person. Over the years, though, I started to build the furnitures myself copying from their online catalog, or to build UP from existing ones (like right now, I'm building a cabinet on top of what used to be a lateral filing drawer unit, to make a mobile pantry/canned food dispenser) - but now IKEA site requires me to give up a little of my privacy setting in exchange of the ability to view their website (so no, thank you).

I have replaced a lot of stuff with IKEA in the past few months. I absolutely love their products and visiting the store is so much fun. I enjoy the small spaces they put together showing off all the products. I'm pretty much maxed out on all I can do in here for now....well except for my den where I have the big tv. I would like to have a couch back there so I might have to get that when it's back in stock. I already have one picked out.

@@PattymacMakes I love what you did to the Kallax (4 cubes) units. The great thing about IKEA furnitures is that you can hack them to your heart's content and only your imagination is the limit. Their design is such that it somehow will fit to anyone's decor. You can add molding and fretwork to make it more ornate or traditional, you can paint it, you can (like you did) change the hardware, stack them and link them and even combine different lines to create a new design. It's the lego of furniture!

Wow I never knew about the hard slider Lol. I wish I knew about it then! I used to live in a carpeted home but all of spaces are now hardwood floors except area rugs. I know exactly what you mean about IKEA furniture putting it together..I once bought a large chest from them (which I still use), but oh boy they’re such a pain to put it together. I ended up ordering a service from them and I don’t put them together myself anymore for large furniture items anymore. I think hard slider thing would be useful for rugged areas too! Thanks!

The hard sliders are a life saver!! I use them with all my furniture and yes they work perfectly on rugs on wood floors. I have them under the feet of my dining table so it's easy for me to move it and clean. They are on the aisle with the picture hanging stuff in Home depot. There are TONS of options!

I actually just finished building my sewing table which coincidentally resembles your Tornviken island. The difference is that half of my table is foldable. The top is made of 2 pieces of true 1 inch thick teak wood I happened to find at a local Lowe's (not all Lowe's in the vicinity carried them though) which I connected together using heavy duty hinges. I built the shelving base part out of poplar 2x2's and for the shelves: 1x12 furniture grade pine board. The 'back' side of my island (on yours, it's the side you store your pink caddy under), is made up of 2 'gate legs' (1x3 poplar) that swing out to support the table top when in use, and swing/fold in when not in use. I drilled a hole to stick a 3/8" dowel on one of the gate legs to hang my sewing rulers. I also use sliders/gliders to move the table, but they're for hardwood floor and nailed in directly under the feet of the base and gate legs. I have too many 'hobbies' so I have to limit and contain my sewing area and tools within this folding unit. It stores my sewing machine when not in use on the lower shelf, with a big basket next to it for my fabrics and stabilizer materials (I don't accumulate them, only bought what I need for each project at a time), and on upper shelf: 3 cardboard boxes for my notions, pressing felt mat, and iron. I still can use the top, folded or unfolded, to do other craft projects.

That sounds AMAZING!!! I'm not handy enough to do a complete furniture build so a kit like this really works for me. But yours sounds incredible!
