Great video, and remember folks, get heater hose, auto part stores near me try to stock me with the much more expensive 'gates' brand fuel hose that's not intended for coolant and will break down and leak sooner than later, ask specifically for heater hose when you give them the sizes and lengths.
Thanks I did a radiator swap on my 96 Max and replaced the hoses but I didn't realize that bypass hose was there so imma go ahead and replace that one too, thanks man.
Great video. I forgot about the bypass hose and will get one while the coolant is out. I have 145,000 miles on a 2001, will be replacing the spark plugs and coolant/heater hoses. I was concerned about the path those heater hoses follow, but after watching, i'm glad I don't need to rip apart too much. I'm also replacing the hood supports, very simple, small screwdriver and they pop right off giving you great access to the 3 plugs in the rear plus the heater hoses.
Jim Adams Nice. If you have not done so already, watch the high pressure power steering hose.
Those smaller hoses are likely for the throttle body and EGR system. Those are quite small only being 1/4" to 5/16" ID and only several inches long or so. I'm having to replace every single one of them plus the heater hoses while I have the intake collector off (in order to replace the right side valve cover gasket). They do leak when they get old. Mine did. :) Good video by the way.
Great and usefull video. I own an 1996 maxima with 72k miles on It. I have a leak in one of the short hoses (maybe the by-pass you mentioned). I replace It last weekend by myself. Seems to work all ok. You saved me hours of resesrch. Thanks and Keep the good work!
Thanks a lot for this. It helped me a lot.
Cool, thank you for watching.
That may be the upper or lower radiator hoses or the water pump. Try to figure it out and get it fixed. If the hoses are older than 10 years old, just try to replace all of them.
First and foremost, does the car get warm/hot? The temperature in the dash, does the needle rise where is should? Other than that, I will try to remember to look on a car at the junk yard today and see if I can see something that will help you.
Great vid. Thanks a lot
But what about the big hose that comes up from inside back of the engine I can't find away to see the end of it. That hose is connected to the upper hose with piece of metal connection and the heater hose. I hope you can help me up in it
Do you know which heater hose is the heater core inlet hose? Thanks.
I'm sorry but I do NOT have access to the car to check. My guess would be the one with the shut off valve attached.
You likely have a problem with your thermostat. Is the coolant level correct? Enough coolant in the system? You really need to get that fixed before you over heat the motor.
Sir nice video ... I have a.cuestion .I want to change the hose that goes from the reservoir tank to the power steering pump
@@RobertDIY you know of size of hose coming from of reservoir tank to of power steering pump sir ?
I have a leak on my 1995 nissan maxima. I watched the video, it was very informing. I am trying to figure what my problem is. This is what I have diagnosed so far. The first time I noticed a problem while idling at a stop at night I saw smoke coming from my hood. So I kept driving instead of constant idling while I finish my delivery route.
With my heat turned full blast. The next morning when I get into the daylight I check my coolant and add 1/4 gallon or less. I figure this will solve the problem.
I let the car idle for a lil bit and I see no leaks of antifreeze. So I figure I was low on antifreeze. Later in the day when I return from a short trip to the store. During that time my heater was not on as I recall. When I parked I see antifreeze leaking from car so I investigate to find out the leak only occurs when the car warms up without the heat running. It seems to be causing a leak near the by pass hose area. My guess is to replace the thermostat because antifreeze is only flowing complete cycle when heater is turned on. What do you think the reason the leak is only sometimes a problem and I cant seem to find a bad hose. I tried some stop leak but it did not help. I also used a telescope mirror to look underside of the upper and by pass hose area.
Loved that video bro just purchased 98 max with 50 thousand on it going to change all hoses u suggested have u or do have a video on how to change water pump on same car
Got a bill for 2 upper and 2 lower radiator hoses on my 2002 Nissan Maxima. Doesnt seem right. Does this car require 4 radiator hoses?
Robert: I went to pick up the other hose and they gave me something else
Me: Let me guess it was a little bit of head 😂
I'm leaking coolant on the same car. It seems to be leaking on the side near the firewall but I have the heater hoses bypassed at the moment and there is not lines for it back there. Also I just replaced the water pump gaskets because I thought it was the weep hole. Is there anything else on the firewall side of that engine that could leak coolant?
The intake manifold has coolant hoses on it that are on the firewall side that you cannot see. I fixed the leak at 3:30am
@@sundeeboiiii2391 dude I have the same problem now and was wondering where it was coming from near the back of the engine bay what all did you end up replacing I have the slowest oil leak that creates a small bit of smoke every once in awhile but for the price of the gasket change thinking about just adding oil every once in awhile
What you called the lower radiator hose is the upper radiator hose per the FSM. Conversely what you call the upper radiator hose is the lower hose, confusing as the lower looks like the upper visually. good video but I point this out as people might be confused if looking at the FSM then this video. Thxs.
Robert did you bleed out the cooling system for air?
well i think im going to bleed mine maybe you can help and put a video up showing how to bleed it and where the bleeder valves are? the reason being that im going to replace my radiator this saturday and the only thing im worried about is the air in the system. i may also flush it too
Saul Goodman
If you find some bleeders let me know. I have never heard of any.
What you can do to try to fill the system good with the first fill is disconnect the top radiator hose.
Cars that have radiator caps typically fill good when you add the coolant through the radiator cap. The coolant reservoir is there to fill the motor the rest of the way in the event that the motor looses coolant, i.e. has air in the system.
So, fill it with coolant the best you can after you replace the radiator or hose, then add coolant to the coolant reservoir. The next few days, check the coolant reservoir and top it off is it is below the full line.
Robert DIY Thanks man i will try this and if i have any issues i will contact you thanks for your fast reply
Hi Robert, I have a nissan maxima 99, and my heater stopped working about 2 weeks ago. We just moved and I drove it for a 1000 miles... I noticed that my coolant level was low so I refilled it. The heater works only when I drive over 40mph. I checked and the coolant doesn't seem to be leaking, I can't afford to take it to the mechanic so I may have to fix it myself.... Any suggestions?
You work on Nissans, too? (I've had a broken thermostat in my Altima for a bit...) But my wife's damn S70! Hope you're doing good, man.
@@RobertDIY hello Robert I am currently involved in fixing some of the things in this video and I realized 6 years old or better are you still active by any chance I have a few questions thank you
And why not do a radiator flush at the same time which requires fresh coolant & not recycled coolant right?
That's up to you. If the coolant system is in good condition and has good coolant, shouldn't need to "FLUSH" anything. But I guess you can if you'd like.
Naw I remember my girls radiator rusted over 10 years & I guess thats from not doing a flush
+thnkbg how long ago was that? I don't even think they are made out of material that can rust anymore. Aluminum and plastic...
+thnkbg the only reason you would need to flush a cooling system is if it is contaminated with something, or the system is getting clogged because of oil intrusion. It is a good idea to replace the coolant every so often as recommended by the type of coolant that you use it. It is also good never to mix different types of coolant because it can turn acid and cause the fluid to eat away at the internal engine parts.
hi Robert, how are you man, havent seen you in 50 years, you look good, hope all is good, talk to you soon, and thank you , you help much
you also, fyi, i worked with you at merrill bean when i was 18 we was friends, i did sshop lot boy crap, im todd
I have a 2005 altima and man it just seems too complicated to try to navigate around the maze & web of entangled hoses & senors & hidden parts.. I'm afraid I'm going to screw something up..lol
You can always wait till a hose blows. Maybe you'll be at a new car dealer's lot where you can just replace it. lol
Oh I get it.. thats why I want to put a grand into this motor with new everything.. just not confident in what I'm doing.. never even changed oil before..lol
So did you just call the dealership or something. Dealer prices are to expensive
ham6817 They are heater hoses. Lots of companies make good coolant hoses. You can go dealer or elsewhere.
thanks........
Only 2 idiots disliked this one! Nice job, Robert, and thanks for being thorough. Vid is gonna help me out!
Jp Berger LOL, thanks for watching. Sometimes people "dislike" a job because they think it's to tough for them to do. :?
They never heard if you can't say anything nice don't say nothing at all. It's been my only aggravation about CZcams all these years
$300-$400 per month on a car that can't be worth more than $2500??
I don't understand the question but if you put $300 to $400 per month into a car of this age you should be done doing the work in 3 or 4 months.
My point was that putting $1200 into a car that is that old may be throwing money away
Where can you purchase a car for $1,200 that you can trust for 2 to 4 years?
Good point. My concern is that it may not last that long, or that you will have to continue to put a ton of $ into it.
The big thing is, if you have to take the car into a shop to keep it running, there will be a point that it will cost to much to keep. My thing is, you need to trust your car. If you don't feel comfortable driving it 500 miles, maybe you should consider getting something newer. Everyone has their breaking point.
Take one thing at a time. First do the coolant leak, then the oil leak, then the power steering leak. Just keep the levels up. Some things you can do yourself and you can get used tires to last you a year or two. If you put $300 or $400 per month into it, in 3 or 4 months you'll be in good shape. Better than getting hooked on car payments for a year or two.
