LESSON SUMMARY
There is nothing quite like the sound of jazz piano-the colorful chords, playful melodies, bluesy inflections, and a swinging comp. These may be some of the reasons why you were drawn to study jazz piano. For other aspiring students, their journey began when they were arrested by a particular jazz pianist’s sound-Red Garland, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett…the list goes on. While these players are all unique, they each developed a highly-refined jazz piano skillset that enabled them to express themselves freely. But how does one develop such a powerful command of essential jazz piano skills? Not without a plan, that’s for sure. This lesson will help you build a balanced practice routine that focuses on the simultaneous development of 5 key pillars of jazz piano proficiency including technique, harmony, scales, lead sheets and improv.

Sir I am following your piano classes can I get special classes
I’m a classical pianist and have recently begun to wonder if I’m even »fluent« in my instrument at all. I was obviously trained to play repertoire across all eras, but jazz and improvisation is generally overlooked. So, to compare it to a language, it felt like I was able to read sentences and texts, but not speak freely in my own words. My technique is not bad at all, but when I first tried to improvise it felt like I was sitting behind a piano for the first time in my life. You wouldn’t believe what a catastrophe it really was. Your videos are really helpful to get the fundamentals down. Thanks a lot!

Total hobbyist amateur, here, but I did pass Grade 7 piano years ago at the RCM. Frustrating to be glued to the page or expected to rote memorize things and rely on muscle memory. I want to understand everything while I'm hearing it. Trying to improvise sounds like crap when I do it.

One thing to check - is it ok to contain left hand exercises by chords mainly? In classical, you do the same stuff for both hands, but here we rather do chords on left and soloing on right. Makes sense to me but just to check.

Fantastic! I've been a pianist for 40 years and I've had some really lousy Jazz teachers. No focus. Just, "learn the chords, scales and play what you want... it's improvisation." I have no idea how to structure my practice to take my playing to the next level. Your lessons appear to be very helpful!
Thanks so much for the video! I’m a little confused by the “practice the 5 chord types for C for 5 weeks, then move to F, etc…”. For learning scales, it feels like it would be better to practice all inversions of diatonic chords of C, then move on to F, etc… But I guess it’s not clear if you would play full or half diminished. Otherwise, It seems like we wouldn’t have the resources to play a 251 in the key of C until you’ve made it to week 57 (Dm7) for example. Or maybe those specific skills are practiced in other pillars and this pillar is more just focused on an individual chord and it’s 5 different qualities? Anyway, I hope all that makes sense. I’m just a beginner trying to wrap my head around theory and practice the most efficient way so thanks again!
That's actually what I was thinking lmao, I'm not gonna split it up like that because I don't think it would take a whole week to learn all of the inversions of 1 chord in 1 scale, instead imma probably either do what you were saying or just learn inversions in all scales of each type of chord
Many ways to build a practice to suit goals time and level. My own included 251 major and minor progressions every day. I may stay a day or weeks on that with a repertoire for the scale I am practicing. Let's say I am learning Autum Leaves Gm. My focus would be to practice 251 major Bb and Gminor. Triads 7ths voicings, inversions..that I would use for playing Autum Leaves. The same for other keys . But we can focus to begin with in C F G Eb Bb an their relatives. Most of jazz use them. It is just an example but hope it helps.

Hi Johnny... Tnx very much for ur lessons as always. Quick ques re the mode theory u mentioned...each mode starts from the respective note of the scale. But if u play C-Dorian it will be i ii flattened iii iv v flattened vi vii i right?
At 3:14 Jonny throws in a Gflat when it's written as a D# on the sheet music. Am I missing something? Typo? Sounds good anyway!
Its great info but one small input from me would be is to listening to jazz and try to play what you like. Transcribing…No scales or chord are going to get you to sound like a jazz musician! But the technique is also important…

I'm a member. in pillar 3 for scales, what is the fingering for the different modes such as Bb of the key of F? starting from F the LH is usually 54321321 then 4321321 and the RH is 123412312341234.. thx
Is that F# a notation error in the Dm7 diatonic UP exercise? Seems like a Gb in that spot would be contextually correct.
I can read the notes and I would say that I am a low intermediate player. Are your classes for someone at my level?
Is D major really the rarest of keys that we use?
at 7:44 I just wonder why the first inversion in bass and treble are laid out differently. Isn't there a right way? Having them look different bothers me if I don't know a reason for it. There are so many different note patterns, why make them look different if they are identical?
So I own a 1927 Steinway Baby Grand, and I have a degree in jazz studies for Trumpet, but my piano playing skills are minimal. Loved the video. I am thinking about following you and your lessons, but my piano is in the middle of my house and I don’t want to play it and disrupt everyone around me. I have a basement studio where I could put an electronic piano I could hook some headsets to to jump on this and learn. My goal is for my family to not hear me play for a year, and then surprise them. What electronic piano for $500-$1000 would you recommend for someone like me to purchase to put in my studio?

Hi Jonny, Unless I misunderstand, your video is great until the latter part. It sets the scene clearly, then just ends. ( Transpose using NUMBERS, not INTERVALS.) It does not cover what comes next or what to do next! Am I correct to assume that the next step is to select any other major key you want and then use the original numbers in the newly selected key to perform the transposition? I hope my question is clear? Please assist. Thanks, Edwin Michael.
As I understand,after you play C maj blues scale with diatonic cords of C major,you continue with scales based on circle of fifth.
So,C,F,Bb etc...
